let's have a thread about sunglasses

I'm interested in a pair of "statement" sunglasses, or just some really nice, striking ones. I don't want them to be large enough to cover my whole area, but not so large that I look like an alien. I don't mind spending a little more than normal if they last a long time.

I recently got rid of all of my sunglasses except one dollar store pair. I never, ever go out without sunglasses, and I was trying to train myself to keep them in one spot, otherwise with a zillion pairs they just get all over the house and then I can't find them despite owning a zillion. It worked, but now I want one fancy pair instead of one cheapo. Glasses are something I wear every day, so having an extra nice, extra interesting pair would be an easy thing to do to improve my personal style or flair or whathaveyou.

Suggestions welcome, and just post sunglasses you like, or whatever!

I love sunglasses. More specifically I love big ridiculous statement sunglasses. I will help you on your quest for cool ones even though I never spend more than ~ $20 on my own because I lose and/or break them too frequently.

I love the Miu Miu ones.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:27 (six years ago) Permalink

me too ;_;. i might try to DIY something similar, tbh. the second ones are YSL and they are p much exactly what i'm looking for (minus pricetag).

I got an enormous hard case specifically made for big sunglasses from Aldo and it's sort of been a lifesaver.

Oh man.

Now I need those.

i got these at h&m and i love them but they're not my favorite alltime sunglasses -- those were white betsey johnson movie star glasses or these weird ones i got at a toy store that i think were supposed to be "jackie o glasses" but were just large round and black

I love big sunglasses but I can't have them come too far down below my eye because they leave marks on my chipmunk-esque cheeks

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 20:44 (six years ago) Permalink

The ones I've been wearing lately give me those marks a little sometimes but they fade pretty quickly. :/

fortunately (or not) for me, my substantial beak will carry any glasses far enough from my face that i have never even thought about having this problem!?
do you guys both have small noses? i've always wondered what that would be like.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 September 2012 12:26 (six years ago) Permalink

I was watching a lot of Star Trek recently and I think I have the same nose as Shatner. Not small. But v big cheeks.

ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Thursday, 6 September 2012 13:17 (six years ago) Permalink

the nose bridge is such a croosh part of wearing glasses

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Thursday, 6 September 2012 13:20 (six years ago) Permalink

I am obviously envious of anyone who is not flat-faced like myself and has a nice nose bridge upon which to perch a pair of glasses

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Thursday, 6 September 2012 13:21 (six years ago) Permalink

Yes, I have a small nose that goes straight down so that my glasses slide down a lot which can be annoying. Sometimes I think my nose is too small for my face.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 6 September 2012 14:43 (six years ago) Permalink

my ears (or something?) are not level, so sunglasses perch unevenly on my face! the bigger they are, the less noticeable this is.

rayuela, Thursday, 6 September 2012 15:36 (six years ago) Permalink

Good timing with this thread, I've got FSA $$ to use up this month.

Where did pair #2 come from?

kate78, Thursday, 6 September 2012 15:53 (six years ago) Permalink

i have a nose that seems custom-made to keep glasses on it

i got prescription sunglasses this summer and wow so great - they are unisex wayfarer-style though, so perhaps not fashiony fabs enough for this thread

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 6 September 2012 16:30 (six years ago) Permalink

yeah I have prescription sunnies too. Kind of a modest Jackie O style, tortoiseshell kinda thing, I love them.
Total cliche but they kinda changed my life. I used to lose sunglassses ALL the time - I've had these for like, 7 years or something.

I have rx sunglasses but I rarely wear them because I usually wear contacts. Haven't lost those though which is goood because $.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 6 September 2012 16:53 (six years ago) Permalink

i have a medium sized turned-up nose that is perfect for glasses, however this is balanced by having somewhat uneven ears

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 September 2012 17:13 (six years ago) Permalink

My nose is big and pointy like an isosceles triangle and the bone is flat on top, so glasses tend to slide down pretty easily. I really need to get my regular glasses tightened, now that I think of it

I really really hate the word "sunnies". Sorry, VG.

I love hers too though.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 6 September 2012 17:36 (six years ago) Permalink

If "sunnies" is an Aus thing then I apologize btw. I guess I really hate it when Americans say it which is a thing that's happened in recent years esp among bloggers and it drives me nuts.

I wish those weren't so stripey.

They have some awesome stuff. Sadly their etsy shop is closed atm. Also, most of their glasses seem to be way farer style which looks horrible on me.

I actually sort of love the heart ones but I could never pull off that level of cutesy.

aw, I said if it was an Aus thing then it's a totally diff story! It just sounds like an affectation to me when I hear or see Americans using it.

I have ones with colour-changing frames, bought on ebay for £6. They go from blue to purple when they're exposed to the sun. I feel a bit childish wearing them but I kind of love them.

fwiw I have the "square" face and the two pairs of sunglasses I have ever found that look good on me are almost identical to the ones in that picture (some cheap thin-frame aviators, and some tortoise shell ray ban "new wayfarers")

ray-bans are great but it's hard to justify them being so expensive other than luxottica's virtual monopoly on designer sunglasses
