HEY YOU IN THE CARGO SHORTS NO I don't want your number. no, I don't want to give you mine.

daria-g, Saturday, 19 July 2008 18:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

today I'm wearing cargo shorts with matching cargo shirt. what do you think of that?

burt_stanton, Saturday, 19 July 2008 19:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

a scrub is a guy in cargo shorts, also known as a buster

elmo argonaut, Sunday, 20 July 2008 23:18 (ten years ago) Permalink

Claaaaaaaaaaaaaaasic in camo. Debatable in other fabrics if worn for VERY casual and not oversized. Pls to pair w Sambas or similar.

Laurel, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:21 (ten years ago) Permalink

Actually can we just talk about boys in camo cargos and old concert Ts/Fred Perrys and soccer shoes all day?

Laurel, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

^you realise you are describing Ned Ragget here.

Can't say it's a look that I would go for. I have snickers work shorts for doing work in. More sort of elephant ears pockets for putting tools and screws in than cargo pockets. Not really a stylish item in high viz orange with assorted stains.

Ed, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:27 (ten years ago) Permalink

Maybe if Ned shaved his head.

Laurel, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

sometimes my hatred for cargo shorts overwhelms me.

Surmounter, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:38 (ten years ago) Permalink

theres a pair in my drawer. i have to get rid of it.

Surmounter, Monday, 21 July 2008 13:43 (ten years ago) Permalink

ew.

lauren, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:07 (ten years ago) Permalink

You're probably still scheming to get your SO's away from him, Lauren -- maybe the day he gets you on a bike, he gives up his cargos? :)

Laurel, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

i claim partial victory - cargos are basically relegated to fishing, gardening, and cleaning the gutters.

lauren, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:18 (ten years ago) Permalink

I only have one pair of shorts and they are cargo shorts. I've been wearing them to beach towns this summer (on the days I go to beach towns).

So obviously I need some shorts. What kind of shorts should I get?

call all destroyer, Monday, 21 July 2008 14:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

I feel like cargo shorts have an unfair reputation. They seem pretty harmless to me.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 00:58 (ten years ago) Permalink

sure, i agree. it's funny though walking around dc on a summer weekend and 85-90% of the guys are wearing cargo shorts. is it like that in other cities?

daria-g, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 04:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

why are cargo shorts so much worse than other shorts?

Lingbert, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 04:38 (ten years ago) Permalink

cargo shorts = lol 1998

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 04:42 (ten years ago) Permalink

given as a reason why people think they're horrible. I don't care, I'm on vacation in the South, I'm wearing some cargo shorts. and not those short shorts that are popular now in Brooklyn, I don't have a death wish.

Yeah, I got all worked up about cargos after the ILE thread about them - "oh no I will have to throw out all my clothes". Then I went outside and got in touch with reality. There are maybe ten people who hate cargo shorts and they're all on the internet.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:18 (ten years ago) Permalink

ok, i hate the idea of cargos because the look is very dave matthews band to me. also wearing them can be really annoying cuz the pockets feel like way too much material.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

I don't like the oversized ones, cargo shorts seem to have undergone the same infantilization as everything else marketed to middle-American men -- a lot of the ones I see are way too baggy, like some kind of cargo/surfer hybrid. The sloppiness is the major offensive factor, I think. Prefer the Army-Navy surplus style with a closer fit.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:29 (ten years ago) Permalink

this seems like an exaggeration. they dont look great or fashionable but they're not, like, forbidden.

deej, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:29 (ten years ago) Permalink

So I went looking for shorts yesterday and every pair of shorts was either cargo or that hideous nu-plaid that somehow became common this year. What do I have to do to find plain, non-cargo shorts in a normal fabric?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

i don't know i haven't been shorts-shopping in a while, i'm a little nervous

i'm into safari shorts, though, which are similar but better IMO. the cut is cleaner.

http://www.cave-crag.co.uk/ProductImages/Sprayway-Safari-Short.jpg

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:35 (ten years ago) Permalink

thats not a great example but some of them are super cute. old navy womens was on a safari kick recently, i think.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:38 (ten years ago) Permalink

those look pretty good!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 15:39 (ten years ago) Permalink

i just dont think the pockets really add anything to the shorts--the lines on regular shorts are much cleaner, with the pockets, even nice shorts look bulky and ill-fitting

max, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

also i find it sort of bizarre that its easier to find cargo shorts than it is to find regular old shorts.

max, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

very bizarre.

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

for some reason cargo shorts get categorized in my head in the same place as khakis and 'chinos,' not necessarily bad, just clothes for people who dont really want to try very hard

max, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:32 (ten years ago) Permalink

I agree basically, Max. Also for people who don't want to be reminded that they're WEARING clothes, ie want them to feel like pajamas. This is where the oversized-ness comes in, I'm pretty sure.

Laurel, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah, agreed.

lauren, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:45 (ten years ago) Permalink

lands end and other new englandy non-ironic deck shoe clothing place has those basic, mid-length shorts. Skinny, above-the-knee shorts are actually a staple of coastal Northeast ware, so as far as I'm concerned everyone's walking around looking like my Connecticut attorney uncle.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 16:57 (ten years ago) Permalink

Good tip, Burt--I never think of Lands End because it makes me feel like my mom. They have shorts organized by inseam--6", 9", or 11". Don't know if I'm ready for 6" shorts.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

lands end shorts are still a little baggy for my taste. but yeah at least theyre at 'normal' lengths.

max, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

hmm i have to check out

Surmounter, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

people who don't want to be reminded that they're WEARING clothes, ie want them to feel like pajamas. This is where the oversized-ness comes in, I'm pretty sure.

this time of year especially, a lot of people don't want too wear too many clothes, just the minimum demanded by social convention. also, guys especially prefer a certain measure of freedom in certain regions.

i prefer my shorts, like most other things, to be fairly minimal, but extra pockets can be handy at times.

o jeezus are ironic short shorts in style now or something?

deeznuts, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

x-post truth--if I'm wearing shorts it's because it's hot as balls and my appearance is going to be taking a backseat to that fact.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:26 (ten years ago) Permalink

short shorts are hip boys' cool coolness at the moment, it seems.

max, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:29 (ten years ago) Permalink

i dunno, i cant distinguish b/w 'short shorts' & 'shorts that are too short', i wouldnt wear any shorts that are at least knee length standing myself

deeznuts, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

it's fun to see tho :)

deeznuts, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 17:40 (ten years ago) Permalink

haha i was just gonna post that. they're definitely not all that absurd. a lot of the shorts i've seen are more structured in cut and fabric, and not as american apparel 70s throwback. they're just kind of short.

I bought a pair of cargo shorts at uniqlo because I needed shorts at the last minute. They're really not bad -- they have a slim line and the pockets don't stick out too much. I think the problem is not really cargo shorts so much as baggy cargo shorts.
