re examples -- i mean more than 4 examples! you have a zillion possible design options that you've developed over the last 12 mo, so i was thinking it might be useful for ppl to see the things you've done so they can choose which they want for their custom set. it's for the customer's ease!

Hm, I see. I have to fill out a longer "About" section of the "shop" so I should put the tumblr/fb links there.

You think I should put pics of hands on there to represent the designs one can get as acrylics? I don't know why, it seems like no one else who sells nailsets does that so I didn't think to do it. I could, though?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 30 November 2013 01:42 (ten years ago) link

It might set you apart. I think it's a good idea for people to see what the designs look like on hands.

carl agatha, Saturday, 30 November 2013 01:44 (ten years ago) link

agree

sweat pea (La Lechera), Saturday, 30 November 2013 02:47 (ten years ago) link

Okay, project for tomorrow. And I just got my first custom order, hurrah!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 30 November 2013 02:48 (ten years ago) link

i just had this vision of glittery white nails with tiny little 'hoof prints' indented in them

no idea how you do that or if you could but that is my suggestion

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 30 November 2013 03:04 (ten years ago) link

Oh that's cute!! I could do it with this brown shimmery polish that I have. Little wolf tracks perhaps.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 30 November 2013 03:07 (ten years ago) link

I mean I know you meant like reindeer ones, which I could also do! But wolf prints make me think of hippie tshirts and that makes me think of elmo and rrrobyn, which is nice.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 30 November 2013 03:08 (ten years ago) link

any animal prints would be great

wolf prints totally otm

I have to say that taking nice photos of well executed nails and putting my work in one place like this makes me really proud.

you should be! mad creative

You're doing great work! I love the hoof tracks idea.

I stuck that longer set to my hands w double-sided tape last night and it was hilarious to wave them around, unable to type or touch things. I have a feeling I won't do many orders in that length.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Saturday, 30 November 2013 15:34 (ten years ago) link

Okay I painted some snowy pinecones on a branch. What else is naturey and not too commercially Christmas-related?

I just put my first set of "nail order" acrylics in the USPS!!!!!!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 21:46 (ten years ago) link

Thanks to Julep's online Black Friday sale, I got 7 bottles of their polish, which is normally $14 per bottle, for a grand total of 22 bucks. This is AMAZING and I am rich in outrageously colored nail potential, but holding their little tubes has also alerted me to the fact that their bottles only hold HALF AS MUCH as the non-indie brands like China Glaze, OPI, Essie, etc. So really they're TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS FOR HALF AN ONCE. That's crazy.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:00 (ten years ago) link

They're only 8mL each! Even my Estee Lauder, which was previously my fanciest shit, is 9mL.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:01 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's insane. Also be careful - the bottles are insanely fragile imo.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 11 December 2013 03:06 (ten years ago) link

Oh good, that will make it easier to get them home in my luggage with 52 other bottles!

three weeks pass...

bought some matte top coat so going to play with it today

kinder, Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

Have fun! I like it best when I do a normal gloss topcoat first and put the matte on that. Just putting it on the polish shows up all the drag lines and unevenness.

Horreur! What are this disassociated lumps of (in orbit), Sunday, 5 January 2014 17:20 (ten years ago) link

Ah I should've done that. It's gone a bit cack-handed!

i like the strokes on the leftmost heart a lot!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 20:00 (ten years ago) link

Me too! That brush-stroke thinning effect that trails off at the end is one of my favorite techniques, even though those are kinda faked because my brush is now so thin it took like three strokes to build those up. :)

There are nail artists who use tiny tiny pens and who can cut the tips down even more to get inconceivably thin, straight lines, but since I only use a brush I try to capitalize on the specific effect.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 20:02 (ten years ago) link

oh hi nail ladies I have a question

I got a very basic no-frills manicure for my bro's wedding while I was in oz. I don't know what kind of polish they used, but they did like 3 coats, it's v thick and shiny. they're not gels or anything, I think it might be shellac? but I'm not sure.

anyway, now they're starting to crack a bit and growing away and I want to remove it because they are looking kinda busted now.
I tried soaking in acetone last night but I sat there for 15 minutes and it didn't budge at all.

do I need to go to a salon to get it removed? what is my best play?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 23:55 (ten years ago) link

Acetone-soaked cotton balls applied to each nail and held in place with aluminum foil is what the nail folks on MUA always say. Are you sure your polish remover is 100% acetone? It may be weaker sauce.

quincie, Wednesday, 19 February 2014 02:48 (ten years ago) link

hmm yeah not completely sure. I'll double check

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 03:05 (ten years ago) link

ugh ingredients list has a bunch of other crap as well as acetone, so obv not 100%

back to drawing board. thanks Quincie!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 03:08 (ten years ago) link

That method has always worked for me.

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 03:08 (ten years ago) link

Shellac is a trade name, I think it's a CND product? Basically I think it is a gel manicure even though they say it's a unique process (probably so they could trademark it or w/e).

Oh yeah: http://www.komonews.com/news/consumer/122994693.html

You'll need actual acetone, like quincie said, and some soaking.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:26 (ten years ago) link

You might want to gob a lot of lotion on your fingers first, because that acetone will straight dry out your cuticles.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:28 (ten years ago) link

yeah p sure this was a knock-off version of shellac

good to know, thxorbit!!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 04:31 (ten years ago) link

Orbit OTM. Out of all the gel polishes Shellac is definitely the easiest to remove and it doesn't damage nails at all. Some of the others (particularly Gelish brand) are really fucking awful to get off and require a lot more soaking and scraping. I try to avoid those and only get Shellac and one other kind but I can't remember it's name now. If you leave the cotton balls tin foil wraps on for enough time you should be able to gently push the polish off with an orange stick but if it's Gelish or similar you might have to scrape hard. :(

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 February 2014 13:17 (ten years ago) link

done! there was some hard scraping & a good 20-30 min of soaking, but i got there. i forgot i had a buffer stashed away in a cupboard, so i got them cleaned up pretty well

i was whining abt them on instagram and this girl i know that i wish i liked more but i reaaaaaally dont commented "blah blah i do mine every week it should only take 10 min" yeah good for you sister thanks for yr #protip PFFFFFLLLT showoff
