I have that, but it's a bit old and flakey so I should replace it!

This is pretty funny. That Kat Von D tattoo liner has a bunch of reviews of people who had serious accidents and the eyeliner looked fine (it is seriously really good). *warning some blood*

And I now realize it's not a felt tip but a brush, which may be why it seems easier to work with.

Yerac, Wednesday, 25 April 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

yeah I have terrible trouble with felt-tips. Brushes all the way for me.

one month passes...

I keep looking at these pics of the Crayola make-up line. Who's ordering?

it looks super fun!

I think I am going to do one of the palettes, a highlighter, a mascara and one of the face crayons.

Yerac, Wednesday, 6 June 2018 00:49 (five years ago) link

Oh these are so neat!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 June 2018 17:16 (five years ago) link

this may be slightly off topic but hoping for some advice on facial cream

I have dry skin in general and a couple of months ago bought some cream because my face was getting... very dry. I ended up with a very fancy (and very small) bottle of french cream which I believe contained water from some enchanted spring https://www.avene.co.uk/face/products-for-daily-use/face-essentials/hydrance-intense-serum

It worked very well but it was also quite costly (30 euros!)

bottle is now empty and I'm wondering if it's likely I'll find a product with similar effects for less money or if I'm better off shelling out for one of these again

any advice appreciated

niels, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 09:30 (five years ago) link

Looks like their trademarked ingredient Cohederm does the same thing as hyaluronic acid (grabs water and keeps it there, making your skin plump and hydrated) so I’d look for something which contains that. I like Vichy Aqualia serum, don’t know how much it costs where you are.

Madchen, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 13:08 (five years ago) link

thanks, I'll try that!

niels, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 13:36 (five years ago) link

I'm in a permanent search for a mascara that I love ever since Fresh discontinued their Supernova mascara. All else is inferior.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31bVGoh1o3L.jpg

What else is very conditioning and goes on like silk but doesn't flake or rub off?

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:03 (five years ago) link

I genuinely love Glossier's new mascara and I am really picky about mascara. It doesn't smudge or flake and it looks natural and separates but also adds volume.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:06 (five years ago) link

It doesn't appear to come in brown? Botheration.

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:29 (five years ago) link

Adding that on to my glossier shopping list.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:32 (five years ago) link

Aw, boo at no brown. It's new though so I bet they add brown soon.

It really is good and that's coming from someone who has been loyal to L'Oreal Voluminous (waterproof) for years. I've tried so many mascaras and this is the only one I've liked.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:37 (five years ago) link

That Voluminious waterproof was my go to for years too. I haven't been wearing much make up recently so have just been using all these clinique mascara samples my mom gave me. But I should probably toss everything because I am sure most are over a year or 2 old now. I am way bad about tossing old make-up.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

I have Voluminous right now and I like the formula but the brush isn't tapered and every time I do my inside corner baby lashes the wide tip gets mascara all over my eyelid and the side of my nose. Two thumbs down.

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

Maybe I can just trim the brush with nail scissors, come to think of it.

which do u hear yanny or (in orbit), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

holy crap, is that the reason for tapered mascara brushes?

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 16:01 (five years ago) link

I am reading up on mascara brushes now.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 16:02 (five years ago) link

Hey niels

If you live in a dry climate, avoid anything with hyaluronic acid because it’ll pull moisture from your skin if it can’t pull it from the air.

If you don’t live somewhere dry, I’d suggest CeraVe moisturizering lotion.

just1n3, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 16:21 (five years ago) link

I believe I'm in a relatively humid climate, and that CeraVe looks very reasonably priced. thanks for schooling me on hyaluronic acid!

niels, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 16:58 (five years ago) link

CeraVe is a fantastic drugstore moisturizer imo.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link

Has anyone used the weleda skin food before?

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 18:56 (five years ago) link

Yep. Some people buy shoes and bags, I buy makeup and skincare.

I love it but it depends on what you're using it for. It is very thick and heavy but it's the only thing that leaves me feeling soft and moisturized when I wake up in the morning. You can't really rub it in like a normal cream so I warm it and rub it around in my hands and then sort of press it into my face. Also, it has a strong herby scent that I love but that might be a prob for some people.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:04 (five years ago) link

I was seeing that Katie Jane Hughes is a fan too. I put it on my list. I usually dislike heavy cremes but I am getting older so I need to revisit.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:06 (five years ago) link

She is indeed. I don't use it every night just when I think I need extra moisturizing. It's great for feet and elbows and stuff like that too.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2018 19:15 (five years ago) link

niels, google Sali Hughes and how to tell if your skin is dry or dehydrated - there is apparently a difference. serum will help for sure. I also cleanse with a cleansing oil rather than foaming stuff (although my skin is 'oily', which oddly is made worse by foaming stuff and better with oil cleansers)

kinder, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

re mascara, I like Lancome Hypnose, think it's the Volume a porter one

kinder, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 21:44 (five years ago) link

Lancome Definicils - doesnt smudge or flake, goes on very smooth

thanks kinder, checked https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/jan/22/deyhydrated-skin-beauty and I believe my skin is indeed dehydrated

two months pass...

sephora sale. I got 2 Huda mini palettes to start experimenting. I am feeling inspired.

Yerac, Saturday, 1 September 2018 01:52 (five years ago) link

I was just telling someone that I have been using a little fenty highlighter (work makeup has been only the highlighter, rose's lip balm, sephora waterproof eye pencil and i can't remember drugstore mascara) and when I get to work I think I look really sweaty and then realize it's the highlighter. I am probably also just really sweaty. But I like the look. I feel like I look healthy.

Yerac, Saturday, 1 September 2018 01:55 (five years ago) link

It is with great difficulty that I manage to refrain from highlighting my entire face to its shining limit every day. I totally agree that it helps with looking healthy though. There’s this amazing Tom Ford blush/highlight stick that I sneak swipes of every time I go to a department store (too expensive to afford on current budget).

Very jealous of anyone who has access to Sephora.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 1 September 2018 13:48 (five years ago) link

i got a free tube of glossier cloud paint and i love it. it has been ages since i used blush and it def helps me look alive

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 1 September 2018 14:00 (five years ago) link

I haven't been in the US in over a year so I am going nutty ordering stuff from places I normally don't have access to. I am trying to be very minimal with the highlight. Just little dabs across my cheekbones and tiny streak along my nose, dab on my lip bow, eyebrow bone.

Yerac, Saturday, 1 September 2018 14:08 (five years ago) link

Every so often I encounter something that I'm so impressed with that I'm like "MUST TELL ILX COSMETICS THREAD," and then I forget.

I'm super impressed with L'Oreal Lash Paradise (lol @ name) in both the regular and waterproof formulas. It's like Voluminous Carbon Black turned up to 11. I saw a friend recently and she asked, "did you get. . . lash extensions?" in a confused sort of way because apparently I am not a person she ever thought would get lash extensions (she's right). The waterproof is super hard core waterproof. Iirc I saw it recommended by an olympic synchronized swim team and that's what led me to it.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 1 September 2018 14:09 (five years ago) link

Hey tangent, have you tried something like MAC’s strobe cream? It’s basically a highlight for the entire face - you can mix it in with your foundation or apply it underneath. I like it, it’s pretty subtle.

just1n3, Saturday, 1 September 2018 14:56 (five years ago) link

i might have to try that mascara, quincie!

i have little benefit highlighter/bronzer powder duo & i kinda love it. but i only use the highlighter if i’m going out, i don’t give enough if a shit about my job to bother using it for daytime looks lol. but it can double as an eyeshadow in a pinch!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 1 September 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link

I like Strobe Cream but don’t wear it much because it’s yet another step in the routine. It doesn’t seem to show up flaws in my skin like some highlighters do though, possibly because of it being an under-foundation thing.

Madchen, Saturday, 1 September 2018 17:08 (five years ago) link

I just bought two new mascaras (voluminous waterproof and the full and something one) but I want to try this one. Mascara lasts me forever, probably longer than it should. I kind of don't follow the guidelines about when to throw out make-up.

Yerac, Saturday, 1 September 2018 17:35 (five years ago) link

xps thanks! I have not tried it and now definitely will. I used to mix one of the Benefit highlighters with moisturiser but it still always ran out too quickly.

L’oreal Lash Paradise didn’t work for me but maybe I just got a bad batch because my friends eyelashes always look amazing. Their Roller Lash however is incredible for me - like a budget version of L’ancome Doll Eyes, but it lasts WAY longer (like 3 months compared with 6 weeks).

tangenttangent, Saturday, 1 September 2018 17:56 (five years ago) link

*Friend’s. I’m not always surrounded by people with amazing eyelashes, thank god.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 1 September 2018 17:57 (five years ago) link

My mascara lasts over a year. I am doing something wrong. Anyway, I want to get eyelash extensions again, mostly to keep me from rubbing my eyes so much, but they just don't look natural enough yet.

Yerac, Saturday, 1 September 2018 18:07 (five years ago) link

I went to Sephora about two weeks ago for the first time in ages and bought the Fenty pro filtr foundation and the universal red lip paint - both so good. I am in love with the foundation though and will be buying a lighter shade once my so-called tan fades. It stays on, stays all day even without powder, doesn’t break me out. I’m in shock tbh.

I like Lash Paradise a lot but it’s still not quite right for me. I may just revert back to Clinique eventually.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 1 September 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

I’ll try the Roller Lash!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 1 September 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link

Let us know what you think! It takes about a week to reach its best state, but stays that way for a while. Ha, I don’t think you’re doing it wrong, Yerac. My mascara never runs out per se, just loses a good consistency through over-use.

Another favourite discovery of late - Urban Decay’s optical illusion primer. It’s much thicker than most primers, but doesn’t clog everything. It is literally like a second face and I love it.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 1 September 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

For anyone with access to Boots, I’ve just bought their Stay Perfect mascara, which is one of the polymer/tubing ones (which I need because of my eyelashes’ mystical smudging powers) and it is A+ and way cheaper than my previous one (Estee Lauder).
