you can ignore the colours, that's another thing i need to figure out.

I think the camel dress with the black piping and sash is BY FAR the classiest. Don't like any of the other color combos.

Are the first set & the piped beige dress the same? I like the beige dress (in blue perhaps? I just love blue) but if it were for me, it would need to not have piping.

they are all slight alterations on the chameleon convertible dress (like my wedding dress). the one laurel likes comes with a crinoline skirt.

just1n3, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:49 (twelve years ago) link

oh and it's not piping, exactly - it's a reversible dress.

just1n3, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 19:51 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it reminded me of your wedding dress - hah! Awesome! I like the crinoline too. Reversible sounds like even more fun!

I dislike the one with three shades of tan because the edges look overcast instead of turned under and hemmed, and that lettuce ruffly edging reads as really cheap to me. That may be unfair but that's how it is.

All the other ones, I think just pale in comparison to the dark camel. It will accessorize AMAZINGLY! All rich colors go with that! Especially RED.

laurel OTM about the camel dress being best by far, and about edges.

the first 2 beige ones, i don't like teh bodices at all. they just end up looking really not-nice if you're busty. i used to have a dress with the top like that (same sort of edges too) and i always felt sorta ick about it. wore it all the time bcuz it was comfy but not because i loved it. best to get clothing you'll love, if you can!

Laurel - she doesn't have to stick with the colours though, if that influences your decision.

I don't like layered dresses either though.

i do not like the layered one either!

guys i need a dress for a friend's wedding in early december. there's not a lot of terrific irl shopping where i am so i think i am limited to online. my go-to is usually Nordstrom, and in fact i just bought a dress online from there, but it doesn't really work and i'll be sending it back. any other online shops i should check out? i feel like i always struggle lately when i'm dress shopping--everything looks too juniors or else too matronly (that could be about my own issues, to be fair.)

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:29 (twelve years ago) link

this is the one i'm sending back to nordstrom.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:31 (twelve years ago) link

not overly special but banana and ann taylor do a lot of dresses that would be wedding-appropriate. and i have officially lived in the suburbs too long!

tehresa, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:40 (twelve years ago) link

modcloth.com and asos.com are kind of younger and funkier but can be kind of hit and miss. Depends on your style, I guess. Asos has free shipping and returns in the US so no cost to try anything, and they have TONS of stuff - it's kind of hard to filter through it all.
I've only ordered one dress from Modcloth before and it was horrible, but they have some very cute retro kind of dresses. Be wary of how short they can be!
I also like Karen Millen dresses but would want to try on in-store.

kinder, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:45 (twelve years ago) link

i tend to assume nothing on modcloth is going to be big enough for me, but asos has some really cute stuff! thanks for reminding me they exist.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

what about that shakti site? something cute but simple that you would get a lot of wear out of and could glam up with shoes/accessories

just1n3, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

e.g. this one already posted

this one's all right. love the color, like the inverted pleats. not sure about the ruffle thingy and can't help wishing it were a little less demure, but what are you going to do.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 03:14 (twelve years ago) link

omg asos! so much cute

http://images.asos.com/inv/media/9/8/9/6/1746989/red/image1xl.jpg

that first one is a little shorter than i would wear, i think, and i'd probably sweat too much dancing in the second one, but they are adorable.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 03:21 (twelve years ago) link

I love ASOS! I think you might have to look at the sale/clearance section and (if you're feeling splurgy) the designer section separately as they don't always all show up under e.g. 'all dresses'. They are among the best clothing websites if only for their clear pics and catwalk videos.

It's winter, first one + tights? It's so pretty..I want!

kinder, you have destroyed my life btw. i need at least 10 of these dresses.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

Fit tips for asos? Am intrigued!!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 13 January 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

Hahahaha.

I have a new favorite dress site but I'm waiting to make a big deal of it until they write me back, since I think it's a Mormon/LES/"modest" apparel company and I don't want to pay them money if they contribute to anti-choice causes.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Friday, 13 January 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

Interesting! I think I know what it might be.

ENBB, Friday, 13 January 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

Err, LDS. They say they give to women's and children's charities but I asked if they would divulge which ones.

belt in the front is a little too voluminous or something, but otherwise, pretty

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

Which site Laurel?
My mom was looking at some LDS modest clothes dot biz something and all their swimsuits were basically the best. Their dresses were pretty good, too! I never really got over my Mormon upbringing when it comes to how much skin I show off (summer tank tops notwithstanding).

no more mr. nice girls (Abbbottt), Friday, 13 January 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

lol I'm the same and I wasn't even Mormon.

I was thinking of the right site - I first saw it mentioned by an LDS blogger and she promotes them really really heavily but it wasn't until Laurel's post that I went - OMG, of course!

ENBB, Friday, 13 January 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago) link

Shabby Apple!!! I found them by accident by googling "modest swimwear" as a JOKE BUT IT IS NO JOKE, MY FRIEND--they have the cutest suits ever!

And the best clothes in the world.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Friday, 13 January 2012 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

oh! i had seen that site before but hadn't realized it was intentionally modest. even i like their clothes!

horseshoe, Friday, 13 January 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I had no problem giving up Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie because I didn't really like anything of theirs and it was freaking expensive for some synthetic chiffon with two seams, a hem, and a fake flower on it. But not buying Shabby Apple dresses is really wounding me.

It means why you gotta be a montague? (Laurel), Friday, 13 January 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

Oh wow I found about ten dresses I'd buy in a heartbeat..but they're kind of pricey for where I'm at right now (house buying in 2013!)
