HELL NO!

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 10:47 (ten years ago) Permalink

I don't wear shorts outside swimming pools and I haven't done since I turned 12.

caek, Thursday, 31 July 2008 12:21 (ten years ago) Permalink

Are we in Bermuda? No? Okay then.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:27 (ten years ago) Permalink

Guy on the left looks like he isnt too keen on the idea either.

Jibe, Thursday, 31 July 2008 13:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

Guy on the left needs only a lollipop and a big hoop to roll to look more or less like a lost English schoolboy.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:04 (ten years ago) Permalink

Guy on the left is bugging me, I think I recognise him, I think he is a british artist or looks like one.

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:05 (ten years ago) Permalink

I'm a pacifist but I fear that I could not help slapping these guys should I ever encounter one of them

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:06 (ten years ago) Permalink

The guy in the middle looks all right, he looks chill and doesn't seem conflicted about his shorts, and the v colorful tie also says "this is a pun on summer casual" in a way (and/or "I'd rather be in Bermuda", which is also acceptable). Still, though...no.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:08 (ten years ago) Permalink

baderonixx, I had to read your post 3 times before I parsed slapping as slapping not sleeping with.

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:08 (ten years ago) Permalink

people are too hard on shorts. it just depends on your job.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:09 (ten years ago) Permalink

postman, ups guy...

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:09 (ten years ago) Permalink

also in the summer, sometimes shorts are all i can do. i have a problem with heat and i'm not about to faint b/c certain people can't look at legs.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:10 (ten years ago) Permalink

never never never never never

G00blar, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:11 (ten years ago) Permalink

that said I'm wearing shorts every day this summer as a huge exception to my usual no-shorts policies (it's hot here).

G00blar, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

The important think about formal bermuda attire is the socks

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:12 (ten years ago) Permalink

Sur - I dont have a problem with shorts myself but these mini-suits are just wrong

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:13 (ten years ago) Permalink

also the whole thing about women being able to wear short things to work and men not being able to pisses me off. women can look professional in a knee-length skirt or dress. we should have an option as well.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:13 (ten years ago) Permalink

i don't know the mini-suits don't look so terrible to me WOW SHOCKA I LIKE THE WEIRD OUTFIT

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:14 (ten years ago) Permalink

Guy on the left somehow reminds me of those tarted up poodles wondering what they have done to deserve such a treatment from their senile masters

:/

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:15 (ten years ago) Permalink

All three of those pairs of shorts in the Times are shorter than ANYTHING I would wear to work, although I may be somewhat conservative in that. Those are not knee-length.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

Also the white guy on the far right looks a) gay as a March hare, and b) like a total douchebag.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

I suspect Thom Browne is responsible for all this

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:20 (ten years ago) Permalink

yea the three looks above are a little short, but i'm just sayin, we need a short option. is not fair.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

wtf is tom brown and why is he so cute

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

It would be "fair" if everyone wore pants, and only pants. People in professional arenas (court, finance, etc) who think women should wear skirts or that skirts are more "correct" are arguing for for women's symbolic sexual availability. Whether they know it or not.

And I hate wearing pants! But the above is still true.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:29 (ten years ago) Permalink

A group of other women argued me down in college on this issue: that a pair of my wool gabardine dress pants was LESS formal than a denim overall jumper, because the jumper was a dress and dresses were categorically more "formal" for women.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:47 (ten years ago) Permalink

i completely disagree!

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

denim + overalls = not formal

at all

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:48 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah - in which part of the world are denim overalls considered formal?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 14:55 (ten years ago) Permalink

Not overalls, a JUMPER. For non-Americans, this is not a sweater, it's something like this:

http://www.careapparel.com/images/36_full.jpg

Obv they were all crazy and soft in the head from living with/being crazy Christian Evangelicals, you don't have to scratch the surface very hard to get people to admit that they secretly think women ought to always wear dresses.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:00 (ten years ago) Permalink

MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RANCH where we were discussing "suit" shorts....

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:01 (ten years ago) Permalink

Do I operate the Safari ride at Disneyworld? No?

then HELL NO.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

funny that in order for men to wear shorts they have to work at disneyworld. BULLSHIT. it's very old-fashioned and bizarre.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

in my mind it's the same thing as insisting a woman wear a skirt to work. stuck in the good old days.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:20 (ten years ago) Permalink

fight the good fight, Surmounter

the idea that only 1 cut of cloth can look OK on a man's body makes me so angry.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

My old boss gave me grief about the one time I pulled it off (record heat wave in SF, 110+ degrees) but then when I went to lunch I saw the owner of the company also in shorts so I took a camphone pic and sent it to my boss and said "sup".

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

AWESOME

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:23 (ten years ago) Permalink

Surm are you saying shorts are office appropriate though?

Kerm, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:30 (ten years ago) Permalink

it completely depends. i work at a progressive arts institution and i feel very comfortable coming to work in shorts, as do other guys here. so, yes.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

people like making rules about things

n/a, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:31 (ten years ago) Permalink

well yeah not squaresville office tie professional. i don't like their shoes, either. just dudes wearing shorts and not looking like children.

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 15:56 (ten years ago) Permalink

4 the office? the 1st ones would be ok

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:11 (ten years ago) Permalink

guys you are overlooking the real challenge of this look -- how to wear dressy shoes with shorts?? is going sockless really actually an option?

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:13 (ten years ago) Permalink

I was thinking for more in general, both of those would be too dressy for my office.

I can't contemplate wearing shorts with anything other than sandals really.

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:15 (ten years ago) Permalink

i mean i can see going sockless in mocs but lace-ups sans socks is a potentially awful thing, just imagining the pinching and blistering and sweating inspires a tug of sympathy for ladies and their torturous footwear

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:16 (ten years ago) Permalink

no, it's terrible. sockless dress shoes are not ok. i would say either very short nice socks, or very high fancy socks, if you wanna go for the gay look.

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:17 (ten years ago) Permalink

fwiw i think a summer suit with shorts is a pretty great idea, with a few stipulations (flat front shorts, tapered knee length, & funtional jacket cuffs to roll up would be a nice touch)

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:22 (ten years ago) Permalink

clean plimsolls could work sockless with the shorts-suit look -- leaving the office-appropriate question aside for the moment

xpost omg @ silver fox in stripey sox A+

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:24 (ten years ago) Permalink

Pshaw re ladies' footwear, I don't like socks and wear flats/loafers/etc sockless as much as possible. Not torturous as long as the shoes are y'know not made of cheapo plastic parts that have edges sharp enough to slice bread.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:24 (ten years ago) Permalink

Ed, did you just say that flat-front walking shorts are too dressy for your office?

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

srsly

Surmounter, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:26 (ten years ago) Permalink

Slightly tongue in cheek, but it is a scruffy bunch here.

Those were both from saks

http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductArray.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446183490&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306418199&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474399545537&bmUID=1217520425808&SECSLOT=LN-Shorts

Do you think saks will still have summer stuff in store next week or will they have flipped on to autumn?

Ed, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:30 (ten years ago) Permalink

"Ah! Just another wonderful day at the office!"

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

I can only conclude that that guy is physically still pre-pubescent and has a) no adult musculature, and b) no genitalia. Both of which make me think he should be having a lie-down and a juice box.

Laurel, Thursday, 31 July 2008 16:43 (ten years ago) Permalink

- I think the guy on the right looks great, really terrific, would wear that often if I were him
- Part of me thinks some of y'all have LEG SHAME
- I have one pair of long slim-cut nice shorts that I would not hesitate to wear to the office, though I haven't done so yet; maybe if we get an August heat wave
- I think short suits are a funny fashion idea that have no actual relevance to anyone except guys who work in superfancy places that deal with fashion or the arts or something -- but I do appreciate that I see lots of nice-looking men's stuff this summer that's not just all casual beachy lawn-mowing looking, like actual neat trim shorts and button-down combos and stuff that looks genuinely sharp and put-together (cf GUY ON RIGHT)

nabisco, Thursday, 31 July 2008 17:33 (ten years ago) Permalink

ACTUALLY dude on the right has kind of a goof-douchey face going, and should lose the sunglasses; I guess I would "wear that often" if I were him while simultaneously wishing I was better looking and had slightly better legs for it.

nabisco, Thursday, 31 July 2008 17:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

shorts outside of the office for men or women = fine
shorts at the office on men or women = you look fucking ridiculous

and my orange hairless-cat t-shirt

rrrobyn, Thursday, 31 July 2008 20:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

i mean shorts for a casual office are fine, but trying to do the dress shorts or short suit thing looks absurd

I work in a casual office -- some of the guys in the studio here spend the summer in college-dude cargo-short style -- but I have yet to really break the wall, even on my really "nice" shorts. I'm on the line, though. Give me a serious enough heat wave, and I'll totally show up in corduroy tennis shorts.

nabisco, Thursday, 31 July 2008 22:00 (ten years ago) Permalink

dude on the right - a junior partner/counsel or VP - is heading out early on friday from corporate douche office to the hamptons. that isn't what he wore in this morning.

dude in the middle - either a section editor or a summer intern - is on hour-plus bryant park lunch break from super-cool-fashion-publishing office

dude on the left is a sales associate at a broome st boutique and you have interrupted an important errand you old bag of a publication has no idea where he is or how he got into that outfit

gabbneb, Friday, 1 August 2008 04:54 (ten years ago) Permalink

Nabisco, I am eager to see shorts incoporated into the pretty 50s engineer look (or was it a mechanic?).

Virginia Plain, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:25 (ten years ago) Permalink

preppy! I meant

Virginia Plain, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:26 (ten years ago) Permalink

one reason i support this look is that i like the long-sleeves/short-pants silhouette

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

dude on the right is an 'associate merchant' at j. crew btw

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:05 (ten years ago) Permalink

yeah, i fail, lol. is my guess that far off of what j. crew is after? maybe they're more youthful. dude in the middle is apparently a branding consultant or something.

gabbneb, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:10 (ten years ago) Permalink

I'm at work. I'm wearing shorts. It's my first time.

Having done the whole thing lots of guys do with never wearing shorts for the entirely of their 20s, I am now of the opinion that it is good and natural for a man to figure out, by the age of 30, how to wear them in a way that's relatively appropriate and stylish.

nabisco, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:38 (ten years ago) Permalink

shorts for work are fine.. I wear them sometimes, slim + just above the knee in black or navy (LOL, most everything I wear is black or navy)

shorts should be an option.
I think folks who insist on an anti-shorts stance are kinda 'itt blogs instruct you how to be a man' from people who are prob not as stylish as they think they are.
and maybe they own a fedora or something.
