it's cold and wet in the West of England. I've got lots of jackets and a thin waterproof I use in summer but I need something warm I can wear out and about, preferably with a hood in case I don't have an umbrella. and preferably something that doesn't make me look like I'm about to go mountain hiking. is that a lot to ask?

fwiw, my search for a reasonably priced, well-made, warm down parka that isn't quilted ended at Eddie Bauer -- got this one for $179. The Eddie Bauer logo is a little corny but it seems very solidly constructed and the fit and color are nice, and it's warm as fuck.

Also waterproof and the liner feels really nice.

What is ilmenswear consensus on Everlane? I bought a few items from them and had kind of a mixed bag experience. The $100 cashmere sweater, while supposedly a good deal for cashmere, wasn't really worth it, starting pilling after several wears. Would rather just get a really well made merino wool sweater at the same price. The hoodie is great, best hoodie I've owned. Pants are kind of flimsy. Shirt-jacket thingy is pretty nice.

(° . ° )― (Lamp), Wednesday, 28 November 2018 17:36 (seven years ago)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 November 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

weirdly, i have gotten multiple compliments on my everlane backpack. never found anything in their apparel that spoke to me.

i didn't really like the couple of everlane tshirts i bought. kind of thin and not the best shape for me. thought they compared really poorly to pre-gildan american apparel. my one everlane sweatshirt has a really wide neck opening--there's always an awkward amount of a tshirt worn under it showing.

circles, Thursday, 29 November 2018 01:32 (seven years ago)

ugh hate that

as a brand name, 'everlane' somehow manages to sound waspier than 'vineyard vines'

itsabot! (rip van wanko), Thursday, 29 November 2018 01:48 (seven years ago)

i have a vinyard vines hat most ppl in colorado dont know what it is but those who do get mad at me

lag∞n, Thursday, 29 November 2018 01:54 (seven years ago)

i bought some everlane stuff and returned it. it was nasty. like if h&m only sold stuff in white and grey.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 29 November 2018 03:31 (seven years ago)

Vineyard Vines is the most amazingly stupid name. Everlane is just one in a long line of brands claiming to solve some sort of clothing problem right?

chinavision!, Thursday, 29 November 2018 03:52 (seven years ago)

Oh wait Untuckit is the most amazingly stupid name. But accurate?

chinavision!, Thursday, 29 November 2018 03:56 (seven years ago)

Untuckit just kills me.

i feel like theres ilx posts circa 2010 with dan p freaking about bonobos shitty ads & looking back im kinda proud of these guys for sticking around long enough to make these pants and have them posted derisively to ilx

(° . ° )― (Lamp), Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:27 (seven years ago)

bonobos is garbage

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 15:51 (seven years ago)

i don't like bonobos

i gave them an honest chance when i went to their store on la brea (la) and it just wasn't my thing

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 29 November 2018 17:59 (seven years ago)

i went to the bonobos store on 5th ave (right next to the untucked shirt store!) b/c i desperately needed pants and they told me i couldn't actually buy any pants there, i would have to order them and then pick them up later--"this is a showroom." fuck a showroom for pants.

adam, Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:15 (seven years ago)

the weirdest thing about untuckit to me is that lots of shirts look fine untucked. it's not a really rare attribute of a shirt

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:20 (seven years ago)

xp

that's there model, right? you just go and try it on and they order everything and have it delivered to you

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 29 November 2018 18:26 (seven years ago)

I mean I have just found the quality of Bonobos products to be really bad for the money. There was a point at which they had my favorite polo shirt but then more recently I ordered some and they had clearly changed -- collars baconed after one wash (cold, hang dry) and never returned to normal. Their dress shirts feel rough and don't hang well on me, even the higher end ones (I bought one once on clearance). The pants are actually mostly fine, better than everlane, and I have gotten work pants from them a couple times.

There once was a man from Untuckit...

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:38 (seven years ago)

as far as dumb ex fratboy type brands go i got some "outlier" "futureworks" pants and they are good

adam, Thursday, 29 November 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

Bonobos trousers — on sale — are a good deal. Nice colors, good fit. Haven’t tried their expensive shirts.

Thraed in which we post meaningless nonsense syllables at one another

I mean, someone could simply post "shmurple" right now and we would be like "Hmmm. I haven't heard of that site."

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Thursday, 29 November 2018 21:50 (seven years ago)

Admittedly I blame Amazon for some of the more outrageous ones, like Qpladlse, Eomenie, Arinla, Quartly, Femaroly, Ladninag, Mansy, Romacci, Fumic, Sellse, YESNO, Floerns, AUSILY, etc.

I randomly started getting Marine Layer catalogs, another one where the name (and styles) feel a bit auto-generated.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 30 November 2018 00:07 (seven years ago)

xp. wow these are real?!

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Friday, 30 November 2018 00:08 (seven years ago)

i am incredulous

rip van wanko, Friday, 30 November 2018 00:14 (seven years ago)

Literally go on Amazon and search for any one of those.
