2/3 of those guys are taking a whiz

Pesto Mindset (Eazy), Monday, 1 October 2018 18:31 (seven years ago)

shorts/long socks/NBs, it me!

rip van wanko, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:32 (seven years ago)

is that jacket like a sweatshirt/jersey fabric or a poplin or what?

rip van wanko, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:34 (seven years ago)

looks like a canvas

plax (ico), Monday, 1 October 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)

yeah it’s heavy twill

the late great, Monday, 1 October 2018 19:43 (seven years ago)

whoops my bad, it's cotton duck (horizontal weave) not cotton twill (diagonal weave)

but yes, it's enzyme washed canvas ... and look how crispy it looks up close

After a long period of working from home, I recently started a very corporate office job. (Not complaining - it was the right choice for my sanity and my family, so I am happy about it.)

But: what is UP with professional menswear these days? I see four main types:

1. Anything-goes casual: t-shirt with a sports team, brewery logo, or cartoon character. Shorts or jeans.

2. Tech-sector business casual: Polo-with-a-logo and khakis. Polo-with-a-logo and jeans on Friday.

3. Moderately hip status-conscious young professional: shirt of a dark, gemlike, or otherwise nonstandard color (plum, emerald). No tie. Twill pants, pop-color socks, expensive shoes with some pointless Piece of Flair like square toes.

4. Senior executive or sales person: Suits (or suit pants), not separates. Lots of grey and blue and pastels. Impeccable spread-collar and point-collar tailored shirts, often striped or checked (rarely solid). Expensive ties that are mostly striped or solid; occasional small-pattern foulards.

I don’t fit into any of these types. My default style is “absent-minded English professor,” which I almost was. Tweed jackets. Button-down dress shirts (white, blue, or blue-and-white striped). Chinos (tan, olive, navy, or grey).

So I guess I occupy a middle ground between 3 and 4. This is not coincidental, because professionally speaking I am positioned exactly between those guys.

Sidenote: I am somewhat surprised at the pattern-mixing going on! Dudes be wearing a striped or checked or plaid shirt, and then they slap on a striped or plaid or boldly patterned tie. WTF?

there's also a youthful variation on #2: jeans, untucked button-down shirts, and clean sneakers (or maybe those awful dress shoes with athletic soles). i haven't been able to bring myself to adopt that look on the rare occasions i go to the office even though it would align well with my wardrobe. polo shirts seem like they're mostly for squares/olds.

i've probably said this here before but my theory is that once jeans became acceptable every-day wear at my company (pretty conservative east-coast financial) all other standard went straight to hell.

Hmm. One of my many weirdnesses is that I generally don't find jeans comfortable or practical; to me they seem heavy and stiff. Also I rarely like suit fabric; trouserwise I dig middle-of-the-road cotton chinos. I am not afraid to rock the khaki Dad Pants. (Not Dockers, though. That is a bridge too far.)

I'm in a semi-startup/hotel world where the executive dress is definitely quality denim + conventional dress shirt + sportcoat (alternately structured or unstuctured).

Pesto Mindset (Eazy), Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)

ye mad puffin, you have to break them in or find ones that are already broken in is the key

F# A# (∞), Saturday, 6 October 2018 18:47 (seven years ago)

also i work for a huge american multinational and all the directors, VPs, sr VPs, etc. all wear a tucked in dress shirt with well fitted jeans and oxfords or some type of leather shoes and no tie

like haven't you heard the warmer your balls the higher the chances of being sterile

F# A# (∞), Saturday, 6 October 2018 19:42 (seven years ago)

as with all things in life balance is crucial

lag∞n, Saturday, 6 October 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

you have to break them in or find ones that are already broken in

Yes but why?

That's like saying "you have to remove the glass shards from your food, or find food that has already had the glass shards removed from it."

Why not simply get clothes that are already comfortable, without requiring an intermediate step to make them so?

I mean, I recently bought a pillow that was not full of bees. No one suggested that what I really should prefer is a pillow that once had bees in it, but now it's okay because the bees have been removed.

Yah Mo B. Hawkins (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 7 October 2018 01:26 (seven years ago)

Like, I'm pretty sure there are pillows that have never even been partly filled with bees, let alone entirely filled. And yet they are quite comfy despite this.

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 11 October 2018 15:46 (seven years ago)

Can anyone help with some black derby-type shoes recs?
Need some new shoes that can look cool at the office AND at the... anywhere else I go? Thinking about the 1461 Docs but something tells me not to do that. Maybe I'm too old or something. Or Docs have peaked again.

SA, Thursday, 11 October 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

I never know which outrageous footwear innovations lagoon will embrace, or scoff at

rip van wanko, Thursday, 11 October 2018 20:41 (seven years ago)

tbf i dont really like those shoes but i like the idea of them, i want a sleeping bag shoe but those ones r too busy / dont really like the toe etc, basically i want a simplified vers of those thatre a slipper-sneaker m/l, like i have sneaker-boots i have sneakers i want the whole spectrum

slippers -> slipper-sneaker -> sneakers -> sneaker-boots -> hiking boots -> big boots

something like that and i have it all except the slipper-sneaker
