This is kind of an ideal imo? It would probably make you crazy if you can't get away from the hard-driving "masculinized" ideal of a leader as someone who dictates or like the "exceptional man" model of the self-made millionaire or inventor who takes all the credit for their own success and doesn't need others except as subordinates or consumers. But it's so much more humane and inter-connected and kind.

it is! and i also didn't find the descriptions that opaque either, though i work in a field that is around 80% female, almost all the best mentors and leaders i've seen in the institutions i've worked in have been women who fostered teams that "ideate together" and "hold the space for the team to find." lol! empowering the people you lead by stepping back and allowing them to own the work as a team. i work in an organization now in which the leadership is male-dominated and extremely hierarchical - the directors & associate directors just issue edicts and demands without any real appreciation for the labor that goes into making things happen, and it sucks.

anyway, i want earthy and neutral linens!

marcos remind me, which part of the country you living in? only tangentially related to the dress code here, just curious

mh, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 15:25 (seven years ago)

cleveland

marcos, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 15:30 (seven years ago)

right on

btw I'm 100% on board with wanting men's clothing that fits that mold

mh, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 15:32 (seven years ago)

Linen suits in neutral colors are actually dud. boring and yet tryhard at the same time. Like those suede wingtip oxfords with sneaker soles.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

Iโ€™m definitely going back and finishing that EF story at some point though

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

one thing i don't get is like, in what temperature range is this a good article of clothing?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 18:21 (seven years ago)

in san francisco

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 18:33 (seven years ago)

I guess it's kind of a theoretically nicer version of wearing a light hoodie or track jacket over something in that you can wear it outdoors, partially unzip, or remove it when it's warmer

mh, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 18:38 (seven years ago)

lol xp feel like i just saw something on twitter showing a uniqlo puffy vest vending machine in san francisco

marcos, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 18:46 (seven years ago)

yeah i saw that tweet too. they have the same machine at burbank airport (which is afaict used solely by bay area occasional commuters like me)

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 18:48 (seven years ago)

I just rolled my eyes but I'd probably use that vending machine after walking around and realizing I was very slightly uncomfortable

This is a demented concatenation

Also what

plax (ico), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 22:07 (seven years ago)

thank god youโ€™re here.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 22:13 (seven years ago)

at least we got to all enjoy the phrase โ€œdemented concatenationโ€

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 22:25 (seven years ago)

Oxford shirts in blue are actually dud. boring and yet tryhard at the same time. Like those purple velvet waistcoasts with maroon leather trim.

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 22:30 (seven years ago)

itโ€™s just two things I RMDE at on the train. Granted the linen suit is not as frequently spotted as the wingtips.

The thing with the neutral linen suit in DC is that there are a few guys around the neighborhood who really pull it off amazingly well, and everybody else looks like an uncomfortable poseur

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 25 July 2018 22:36 (seven years ago)

uniqlo lightweight down >> patagonia fleece

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 25 July 2018 23:36 (seven years ago)

Lots of fux0rs all over the west coast wearing the fleece vest

F# A# (โˆž), Thursday, 26 July 2018 01:30 (seven years ago)

These days im sportin the khaks/chins but still too warm outside

Good thing its a little igloo at the office

F# A# (โˆž), Thursday, 26 July 2018 01:31 (seven years ago)

Linen suits primarily come in neutral colors though. I have a navy one but thatโ€™s kinda rare? And Iโ€™m not sure how I feel about combining a conservative color with a non-conservative material.

Or is this more a complaint about cream/tan/olive suits etc regardless of material?

chinavision!, Thursday, 26 July 2018 12:11 (seven years ago)

outler futureworks might be my new favorite pants

beard papa, Thursday, 26 July 2018 14:43 (seven years ago)

the slim dungarees are pretty good too

mh, Thursday, 26 July 2018 14:59 (seven years ago)

oo those look great, thanks for the tip

diamonddave85โ€‹โ€‹ (diamonddave85), Thursday, 26 July 2018 15:17 (seven years ago)

I'll probably die after I stand too close to a fire and the synthetic fabrics melt to my legs but they're comfortable, you can wipe spilled coffee right off em, and they look like normal pants with a nice cut

mh, Thursday, 26 July 2018 15:19 (seven years ago)

Yeah I have a few pairs of Slim Dungarees. My oldest pair I bought three years ago and they are still holding up very well. I wear them 2-3 days a week and wash gently about as often as I did jeans.

beard papa, Thursday, 26 July 2018 17:16 (seven years ago)

I couldn't read that WSJ piece but I hope it referenced: https://www.instagram.com/midtownuniform/?hl=en

chinavision!, Friday, 3 August 2018 13:48 (seven years ago)

I have to wear a coat and tie M-F for the next ten months

El Tomboto, Friday, 3 August 2018 13:53 (seven years ago)

I guess I half appreciate the scam that is convincing tacky money launderers that itโ€™s cool to spend $950 on a gaudy tie or whatever. Thereโ€™s definitely a price point above which youโ€™re probably buying increasingly ugly (or shiny?) clothing.

recently found out that there are a shitload of younger dudes who are sneaker nerds after I, nerd with casual sneaker interest, bought something in that vein

like I have 20somethings saying "whoa got in on that drop" and I don't know how I feel

mh, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:24 (seven years ago)

In case this needs to be said, and I truly hope it does not:

Do not wear chucks with jacket and tie.

Do not consider it for even one tenth of one nanosecond.

Please confirm that you have received this message.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 3 August 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)

what if it's a jacket, tie, and... jeans
