surm, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:55 (eight years ago)

i'm having a bit of a problem with my concealer

surm, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:57 (eight years ago)

Has anyone tried Fenty yet?

Yerac, Friday, 9 March 2018 12:59 (eight years ago)

Yes. OK before I go on let me just say that you know how some people buy bags and shoes and that's their thing? Makeup and skincare are obviously mine. Also, I take full advantage of Sephora's return policy and prob return something if I don't absolutely love it. Case in point, the Fenty matte lipstick I bought. The formula was excellent (and I'm not really into matte lips mostly because I hate how they feel) but the color didn't work for me. I do have the universal gloss thing and I like that a lot. That's all I've tried. So far. The packaging is gorgeous.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:25 (eight years ago)

I have a makeup/skincare buying problem. AMA.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:25 (eight years ago)

Tell me about your concealor woes, Surm.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:26 (eight years ago)

concealER

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:30 (eight years ago)

Sometimes I want to start that whole beauty blog that we tried ages ago up again.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:33 (eight years ago)

I would love a concealer and base (B.B. cream, tinted moisturizer, or foundation) rec - I have really uneven skin bc of splotchy freckles, and also really bad under eye darkness/puffiness. I bought clear frames a while ago and now the under eye area is more visible.

just1n3, Friday, 9 March 2018 14:53 (eight years ago)

OK obviously what works for me me might not for you because everyone is different etc. but I really love the following for myself.

Foundation - Loreal Pro-Glow. It's not full coverage but it's just enough for me when I feel like I need it and it leaves you looking glowy. Concealer - every day without fail because I have deep set eyes and bad circles - The only one I've bought for years now is the Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer. It's full coverage and it's amazing. You only have to use a tiny bit so it lasts ages.

I've heard people raving about the IT Cosmetics CC cream but I bought a small size and it was a little too thick for my liking. Returned.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 15:20 (eight years ago)

I have a little sample of the IT concealer but it’s a little too dark I think. My big problem is getting the right color in a base bc of my unevenness- it always seems too light or too dark.

just1n3, Friday, 9 March 2018 15:51 (eight years ago)

Yeah the IT CC cream I bought wasn't the right color either. I'm really fair so sometimes have a tough time finding things light.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 15:57 (eight years ago)

with foundation I think it's just a case of trying samples for a while (often means taking politely to sales assistants which isn't actually that bad :p) to see how they get on in combination with your moisturiser etc.

I liked ysl touche eclat foundation although I don't think it lasts that long. Also dior forever glow or whatever it's called.

kinder, Friday, 9 March 2018 16:04 (eight years ago)

I am so clueless on foundation or concealer that when I went to sephora I just had the salesperson do that weird camera image of my skin to find a match. She recommended makeupforever powder foundation and it was fine. I used it several times, broke the powder, put it back together with alcohol and then shattered it again. The end.

Yerac, Friday, 9 March 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)

With all the potion and lotion buying I've seen never found day and night moisturizers that I've been happy enough to remain loyal to. I'm currently using some Peter Thomas Roth stuff I got on sale in a set and it's nice but not enough to repurchase. Hmmmmm. Any good recs? Also looking for a good facial sunscreen.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 16:21 (eight years ago)

that should have read "With all the potion and lotion buying I do I've still never . . . "

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 16:22 (eight years ago)

Peter Thomas Roth was the only facial sunscreen that I ever liked, but it's too pricey for the amount. Everything else makes me too shiny/cloggy. I think I said above I used Kiehl's ultra moisturizer for like 10 years and in the last two years switched to First Aid Beauty ultra repair. I feel like I can slather both on and it doesn't ever feel heavy for me. I'll be 40 soon and maybe I will have to get something different in the next couple of years but these both really work for me.

Yerac, Friday, 9 March 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

Oh maybe that was the skincare thread...

Yerac, Friday, 9 March 2018 16:33 (eight years ago)

I do keep hearing lots of good things about FAB. Maybe will try that. I use Retin-A for anti-aging stuff so I just need a good basic moisturizer. Thank you! Also, 40 is the best. I think you'll like it.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 16:40 (eight years ago)

i love my st ives moisturizer - collagen elastin. it's pretty amazing in the morning.

soooo my concealer works perfectly for run of the mill coverage, but when there's an actual BLEMISH, it's like not the right color. i'm thinking about getting a powder concealer. just always so hard to find the right color.

maybe i'll try a sephora consult again? the last time i wasn't vocal enough about what i wanted so i returned the product.

surm, Friday, 9 March 2018 17:00 (eight years ago)

I like the Tarte concealer ENBB posted above but need to moisturize well under my eyes and on any spots before I use it. There’s a NYX one in a tube that pretty decent and cheap. And people rave about the maybeline one with a sponge thingy on the end? I haven’t tried it though (it has ingredients my skin doesn’t like) and don’t know if it will cover blemishes. I’ve been using mineral makeup powder for a while and use a small brush to put it under my eyes and on any blemishes before I go over my face with a bigger brush. Not everyone loves mineral makeup though!

I do want to try the Fenty foundation!

I just bought a Maybeline superstay matte ink liquid lipstick in “lover” and it’s such a good colour (on my fair-cool-pink-neutral-what-agh skin tone). It will likely dry my lips out but we shall see...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 10 March 2018 02:12 (eight years ago)

I love lipsticks so much and have absolutely no clue what I am allergic to in most of them. It's super annoying that it only happened in my 20s and also that a lot of people have this issue and have posted about it on the internet but the last time I checked there was no clear defined answer. The fenty foundation is what I was most interested in recently. That and the iipsticks used on Riverdale.

Yerac, Saturday, 10 March 2018 03:01 (eight years ago)

Riverdale lipsticks are so goooooooood omg

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 10 March 2018 03:17 (eight years ago)

oh no I’ve only watched one ep of riverdale but I appreciate good lipstick enough to watch more!

p.s. the beauty-internet has convinced me to grow my eyebrows out. And they were right.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 10 March 2018 05:06 (eight years ago)

I love Veronica's lipstick although when I looked it up I didn't realize it was purple/berry (not my normal thing). I would still try.

Yerac, Saturday, 10 March 2018 13:59 (eight years ago)

Is there a foundation that is good for sensitive skin? I don’t go to Sephora bc it is too big and overwhelming for me. Maybe I should try Kiehl’s? Their size is more my speed. I have no idea what shade to get.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 10 March 2018 17:46 (eight years ago)

I have sensitive skin, rosacea etc, and struggled with foundation for a while. I finally settled on Estee Lauder double-wear. I don’t get breakouts or itching, it lasts forrrrrrever, and gives my skin a v pleasing dewyness.
They have a normal formula & a lighter formula, if you don’t have blemishes etc you could try the light formula to start? idk.
And this might be corny & oldschool but the makeup counter women at Macys/Nordstrom etc know their shit, they are good at finding yr shade, and the experience is way less annoying than Sephora or (ugh) Ulta.
ymmv tho

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 10 March 2018 18:19 (eight years ago)

soooo i never wear foundation. i just buy liquid makeup in the bottles for evening out. i don't think i NEED foundation but it is a nice idea for bad skin days maybe? it's always scared me!

surm, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:41 (eight years ago)

"liquid makeup in the bottles" isn't foundation?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 12 March 2018 17:43 (eight years ago)

It is.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 March 2018 17:44 (eight years ago)

ok i didn't know! so i don't like USE it as foundation though, i just use it as concealer/where needed. am i crazy?

surm, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:49 (eight years ago)

surprise, you are wearing foundation

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 12 March 2018 17:50 (eight years ago)

lol right now even :) for YEARS

surm, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:50 (eight years ago)

sort of takes the "fear" away eh?

i try not to wear it in the summer but sometimes i do if i want to look/feel extra good

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 12 March 2018 17:52 (eight years ago)

yes--that makes sense. i've gotten better at blending it in to my natural skin tone which has proved v important.

surm, Monday, 12 March 2018 17:57 (eight years ago)

dumb question: what's the difference between concealer and foundation, and how do they work together? Like, what are you supposed to do with them? What is their ideal function?

sarahell, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:01 (eight years ago)

concealer is intended to be heavier coverage for spots that are not the same color as the rest of your skin (zits, dark spots, undereye circles, what have you)

foundation is lighter coverage (ime, usually) and intended for full-face skin tone evening.

at least that is what i thought...?

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 12 March 2018 19:02 (eight years ago)

The main reason that I don't wear daily foundation or powder except is because when I had a boutique job over 15 years ago we used to have to try to clean all the clothes that had make-up on them from women trying them on and pulling it against their faces. It just totally turned me off.

Yerac, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:07 (eight years ago)

This is why I was interested in fenty foundation (after seeing that article about Daniel Kayuula wearing it at the oscars and hugging Jordan Peele in his white suit).

Yerac, Monday, 12 March 2018 19:16 (eight years ago)

Ah! that makes sense. :)

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 March 2018 19:43 (eight years ago)

today i rediscovered my Jane Iredale bb cream <3

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 12 March 2018 19:44 (eight years ago)

ymmv but I really like those egg-shaped sponges for applying foundation. way quicker and more even than using my fingers.

kinder, Monday, 12 March 2018 20:01 (eight years ago)

i am most comfortable using a brush, i cant get sponge application right

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 12 March 2018 20:51 (eight years ago)

if I never have the clean of deodorant marks of black jersey again....

ugh

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 12 March 2018 22:36 (eight years ago)

so i'm still on the fence RE: whether or not to get an overnight cream for the eyes. i have pretty resilient olive skin and my moisturizer/overnight moisturizer combo seems to do the trick, but i LOVE all about eyes by Clinique. is eye cream still a thing?

also i'm quite positive i've asked this before, but wondering if anyone has a favorite blend-able *pencil* eyeliner.

surm, Tuesday, 13 March 2018 16:18 (eight years ago)

three weeks pass...

Idk why at age 38 I still can’t make up my face in even the most basic fashion. I’ve watched and read enough beauty tutorials that I should be moderately proficient by now. I just can’t seem to get past having a cake-face. The last year or so I’ve had no interest in my appearance but since I’ve been feeling better the last couple months I’m putting more effort in but it’s bumming me up that I can’t do decent full-face makeup. NB I’m not interested in Instagram-style makeup, but would like to master a simple fresh daytime look and a simple classic nighttime look. Why is it so hard for me?!? I’ve probably watched 500 tutorials on how to apply foundations and concealers and it still looks terrible on me. The coloring of my face really annoys me bc it’s cobered in sunspots and I’ve got lots of redness in the lower part of my face, and I can’t figure out how to work with it - if I try to cover it, it looks cakey and/or flat, and if I try sheer it just doesn’t look good.

Sorry for rant but I tried to do my face this morning and thought it looked good in the natural light of my bedroom but then it looked horrific in the natural light of the bathroom?!?

just1n3, Thursday, 5 April 2018 21:26 (eight years ago)

it took me until last year to finally find a foundation that didn't look cakey or fake...it can take FOREVER.

one thing that helped me was good brushes, then using less foundation and blending more. if you have a good full-coverage foundation you shouldn't need to use a lot, even if you have blemishes etc. and then i started using a light HD powder just to make sure it doesn't move. I found with my skin that foundation + regular loose powder just settled everything into my pores after a few hours and looked gross. it can get kinda crazy with blemishes and problem skin juggling concealers and finding the right color/coverage, so obviously all this is a huge ymmv x 1000

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2018 23:17 (eight years ago)

I completely get where you are at J, it's a very disheartening feeling!! <3

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 April 2018 23:18 (eight years ago)

Thanks, lady <3

I’ve got this nars foundation but I might try the infamous Estée Lauder doublewear soon
