I’m in love. $299 is too steep for me though.

for the inner qbert fan in all of us!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 12:55 (eight years ago)

bought a very cheap windowpane jacket in the Zara sale yesterday. Some sort of polyester monstrosity but I like it. Not really sure what to combine it with - it's black with off-white and ochre lines. Quite like mustard/ochre colour schemes but they're really not popular. I was trying to find a T or a shirt that would suit but it's harder than expected.

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 12:57 (eight years ago)

Is it like a deconstructed blazer? You can pair that with anything. I am kinda minimal so i’d recommmend neutral colors and solids not patterns for the rest of the outfit if you want the ochre to pop.

treeship 2, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 13:07 (eight years ago)

not sure what a deconstructed blazer is. it's fairly casual

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 13:35 (eight years ago)

this is totally just based on a hunch but I always guessed that "deconstructed blazer" was just a marketing term invented to sell more cheaply-made blazers at a bigger markup, because I assume giving a blazer structure increases costs.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:21 (eight years ago)

ochre is one of my favorite colors

marcos, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:25 (eight years ago)

ochre and mustard yellow have been basically unavoidable in high street shops for the past three years, i don't know what you're on about, dog latin

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:34 (eight years ago)

Deconstructed means that it doesn’t contain the more structural elements inside that usually shape a jacket: layers of canvas or fusing, padding on the shoulders, roping, lining generally. I.e it’s comprised mainly of the outer fabric only.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:36 (eight years ago)

No real correlation to price either. It can be harder to make a flattering deconstructed jacket actually and sometimes involves more detail work if seems aren’t covered by a lining.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:38 (eight years ago)

Ugh seams

chinavision!, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 15:38 (eight years ago)

Deconstruction is philosopher Jacques Derrida's critique of the relationship between blazers and meaning. Derrida's approach consists in conducting readings of blazers with an eye to what runs counter to the structural unity or intended sense of a particular blazer. The purpose is to expose that the object of fabric, and that which any blazer is founded upon, is irreducibly complex, unstable, or impossible. Throughout his readings, Derrida hoped to show deconstruction at work, i.e., the ways that this originary complexity—which by definition cannot ever be completely known—works its structuring and destructuring effects.

dog latin: in the UK a blazer is a blue jacket with metal buttons worn by a red faced UKIP voter, but everyone else on this thread means an unmatched suit jacket.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

they have NAUTICAL buttons right? some day i want to wear a blazer with a white turtleneck, strangely NOT what captain haddock wears even though that's what i imagine in my mind's eye

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:34 (eight years ago)

you're thinking of captain birdseye iirc

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:37 (eight years ago)

infinity (∞), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:43 (eight years ago)

why stop there, givenchy tees go up to like $1200 iirc

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:14 (eight years ago)

probably because of people's attention span

infinity (∞), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:15 (eight years ago)

shaking my head at the uniqlo inclusion not being the premium cotton pick

mh, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:15 (eight years ago)

I'd kind of like to know if there was any decision-making process at all that went in to deciding which Givenchy tees sell for like $350 vs $450 Vs $750 vs $1000 or whatever, or if it's literally just darts at a board.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:18 (eight years ago)

I've never seen a top man T at that price. not that i've been in for a decade but it's generally a wee bit more than H&M, no?

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:27 (eight years ago)

xp they're owned by a conglomerate so I'd suspect there's a specific price range each brand is given and clothing is priced within that band accordingly

maybe it's a regional thing but even in the shops they call a suit jacket sans trousers a blazer. Never heard the phrase 'unmatched suit jacket' uttered IRL outside of fashion blogs etc

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:43 (eight years ago)

to me a blazer is a more casual unmatched suit style jacket, like you see ppl straight up wearing a regular suit jacket with jeans and it looks fn bozo, tho i also recognize that the blue jacket with the metal buttons is the traditional definition

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:46 (eight years ago)

ppl need to be mindful when mixing garments of different casualness levels

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:47 (eight years ago)

sure the original meaning probably was like a bus conductors jacket. there's probably no greater difference in UK/US vernacular than in the fashion industry. I have to look up what people are talking about ITT and half the time I end up going 'ahhh so they mean x'

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:49 (eight years ago)

like there do exist blazers of a similar casualness level as jeans, and there are blazers of a casualness level of slacks, and there are suit jackets that come with matching pants which are generally tho not always very uncasual, im not saying you cant mix them but just be aware

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:49 (eight years ago)

this is a horrific look that has traumatized me

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:51 (eight years ago)

obv rules can be broken successful but a tie w/ jeans is horrendous and i would never, ever do it

marcos, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)

hey whats up

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

tie w/jeans is fine with the right shirt/tie/jacket/sweater. the problem is no one knows understand how different fabrics, patterns, etc. affect the final look.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

oxford buttondown, not white twill w/spread collar. wool or knit tie, not shiny silk tie. and so forth.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:55 (eight years ago)

I don't think anyone's advocating an actual suit jacket with jeans here guys. although I think there was a time I would wear a skinny tie and jeans but that was over 10 years ago at least

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:56 (eight years ago)

xp yeah totally depends on the material and style. generally business attire and casual don't mix

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 17:58 (eight years ago)

sry i gotta come down on the side of tie with jeans is generally pretty bad, dressing up jeans is kinda just lame IMHO there are lots of kinds of pants, i know everyone wants to wear jeans 2 work and i sympathize but its still just trying to square a circle jeans r for being cool chill and for wiping your hands on and dont really need to be paired with a gingham shirt a northface fleece and some shoes, also a thing i hate while were at it is the tie without jacket shitty college age male look

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:03 (eight years ago)

also i know there is the rocker guy tie with jeans look too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:04 (eight years ago)

Suit jacket or suit coat - has matching pants (and maybe vest). Generally more formal in cut, fabric, and usage than sportcoats/jackets/blazers.

Jacket or sportcoat - meant to be worn as a separate, with non-matchy but still coordinating pants. Generally less formal in cut, fabric and usage. One might see tweed and corduroy and even velvet in this category.

Blazer - subcategory of jacket/sportcoat, usually blue with gold buttons but not always.

Easy to mush these things up because all blazers are sportcoats but not all sportcoats are blazers, geez doodz, there can be some areas of ambiguity but most of the time it is not that hard to figure out what is meant

I will finish what I (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:05 (eight years ago)

get some nice wool pants or cotton pants for the summer people will notice and think you are on to something

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:06 (eight years ago)

Jean jacket and tie
Feel like such a lie

Heavy Messages (jed_), Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:07 (eight years ago)

i feel like maybe ppl just dont want to say sport coat cause it sounds super lame

lag∞n, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 18:07 (eight years ago)
