yeah = there's actually color science behind the recommendations, similar to colors/patterns/cuts of clothing and whether they make you look larger/smaller/shorter/taller ...

sarahell, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:52 (eight years ago)

i have green eyes and wear purple eye shadow as a default/neutral!

my general philosophy is do with your face what makes you happy and don't be afraid of anything -- nothing about your face will burn anyone's eyes out, there is nothing to fear

The only thing I know about eyeshadow is to put a darker color in the crease and blend to give you a Sophia Loren look.

Yerac, Thursday, 1 February 2018 23:27 (eight years ago)

VG I am confused--dark on the lid, then light on the outside, closer to the ear than the nose?

If so, this is blowing my mind a bit but then again I learned eyeshadow in during the Dynasty of the 1980s.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 1 February 2018 23:29 (eight years ago)

dark on the whole lid & then light on the edge above the outer lid sorta outer socket-bone/under brow

it pulls the shape of the eye up & out just a little

i have v round hooded eyes & found a full-on smokey eye made me look a bit too much like a panda, even with a lot of blending. a good metallic light color, or even just powdered highlighter seems to do the trick for the outer edge, for me anyway

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 2 February 2018 00:01 (eight years ago)

aah OK gonna try this

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 2 February 2018 00:18 (eight years ago)

:D

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 2 February 2018 00:42 (eight years ago)

ok just watched youtube videos re: this and I get it and OH!

I've been doing the colors/shape just soooo different, this is a game-changer tbrr

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 2 February 2018 01:34 (eight years ago)

meaning now maybe I will do some eye makeup and it will be more Oh than Uh

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 2 February 2018 01:35 (eight years ago)

yeah it definitely was a gamechanger for me
and it made me more excited to perfect an overall ~look~ once i got the eyes right

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 2 February 2018 01:39 (eight years ago)

Ha ha, I favor purple eye makeup because it's my favorite color and also I think it makes my eyes look greener.

I have gotten a lot of ideas from YouTube especially for specific palettes.

Kat Von D has a Divine themed palette coming out next month. WANT!

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 2 February 2018 07:58 (eight years ago)

My standard eye makeup routine is lightest shade on crease and above, middle color on lid, darkest color on outer lid.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 2 February 2018 07:59 (eight years ago)

Tokyo, I always remember you having nice eye makeup. I should look at more youtube videos. I watched the one video Alexa Chung did when she had her eyeko line and it really helped me with liquid eyeliner application. Basically, I just do that tutorial all the time.

Yerac, Sunday, 4 February 2018 10:58 (eight years ago)

OK so I'm geeking out and need to share - I did a purple glossy lid look last night just playing around and tagged my favorite makeup artist in the pic on IG saying that she'd inspired me and she liked it and msgd me that it was v pretty. :D

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 5 February 2018 15:27 (eight years ago)

that’s awesome!!! :D

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 5 February 2018 15:45 (eight years ago)

nothing to fear!!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 5 February 2018 22:02 (eight years ago)

three weeks pass...

This is probably the wrong thread for this, but it’s the only one I’m aware of where women discuss matters of body aesthetics...

To what extent is it acceptable to go wedding dress shopping/to wedding fairs without having any inclination to ever get married and does anyone have any experience of this or is it purely in the realm of Muriel/Dee Reynolds insanity? Related question: are there any circumstances in which it’s acceptable to wear a wedding dress besides a wedding? Sounds like I’m trolling but I am dead serious.

tangenttangent, Friday, 2 March 2018 21:34 (eight years ago)

have you gone to thrift stores to try on wedding dresses? that might scratch the itch without being a possible nuisance to people who sell very expensive dresses. there's rarely a thrift store without at least one wedding dress in it, at least ime

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 2 March 2018 21:36 (eight years ago)

there are women's clothing threads too -- i think they are on I Love Style

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 2 March 2018 21:37 (eight years ago)

Ah, thank you - I will seek them out next time! Thrift store wedding dresses are a good idea. They are just so beautiful and ethereal and I’d love a non-wedding wedding to be able to wear them.

More on topic - braved a bright orange matte lip today for the first time and found it surprisingly wearable.

tangenttangent, Friday, 2 March 2018 21:57 (eight years ago)

I would think a tulle type of dress in a light color might be better suited for more non-getting married occasions or dress up. Or do you like those retro bateau neck satin looks in white?

Yerac, Saturday, 3 March 2018 02:21 (eight years ago)

I am a strong proponent of wearing whatever you want, "wedding dress" is a pretty arbitrary label

sarahell, Saturday, 3 March 2018 07:14 (eight years ago)

Agreed!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 4 March 2018 16:20 (eight years ago)

My wedding dress was a black and white short dress found on the internet with an aviator style jacket over it.

Yerac, Sunday, 4 March 2018 16:42 (eight years ago)

When I was in high school, there was a Jessica McClintock/Gunne Sax outlet nearby, and we would occasionally go there and try on wedding dresses.

that sounds awesome!

surm, Monday, 5 March 2018 17:06 (eight years ago)

Even just reading "Jessice McClintock" I can smell what Seventeen magazines from the early 90s smelled like.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2018 17:15 (eight years ago)

baby soft
exclamation!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 5 March 2018 21:18 (eight years ago)

guys i'm in the market for a new blush maybe? i dunno if i should go coral or baby pink for spring

surm, Monday, 5 March 2018 21:21 (eight years ago)

x-post Navy by Covergirl

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 5 March 2018 21:26 (eight years ago)

x-post - Surm think it depends on your coloring though both might work. Do not like all of their products but I do think the Glossier Cloud Paints are nice and there is a pink and a peach that you can even mix.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 5 March 2018 21:27 (eight years ago)

I love Bobby Brown Pale Pink (not actually pale) and Nars Orgasm for peachy.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 5 March 2018 21:39 (eight years ago)

ohh good tips

yeah you know, i love both colors but sometimes pink makes me look like i have a fever? lol. maybe i will get BOTH! treat myself! heard really good things about Glossier's masks too

surm, Monday, 5 March 2018 21:52 (eight years ago)

Exclamation! Make a statement without saying a word.

I feel the same way about blush. Like I am always embarrassed or drinking so my cheeks are pink anyway. These Glossier Cloud Paints look nice. I had never heard of them before.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:00 (eight years ago)

Yeah, they're fun. I'd recommend them as well as the highlighter but not the glossier lip sticks. I didn't like those at all. I also have a gel stain from Sephora (their own brand) which is great but a little harder to work with because it really stains if you don't work fast. I love blush.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 5 March 2018 22:04 (eight years ago)

xp Yerac, I'm the same re pink cheeks! I did recently discover the concept of "contouring" (hey, I just started being femme-y a year ago after decades of not) and I like that effect

sarahell, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:08 (eight years ago)

I really only ever do my eyes (i'm allergic to a lot of lipsticks), but I've watched 8 seasons of RuPaul Drag Race in the last two months and now I am suddenly interested in contouring.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:13 (eight years ago)

hahahahaha. same for most of us i think. i am finally using bronzer effectively for the first time in my life! it's like, not too dark, which is good.

surm, Monday, 5 March 2018 22:56 (eight years ago)

I also want some wigs but that's a whole other thing.

Yerac, Monday, 5 March 2018 23:18 (eight years ago)

SAME! there is no way i would ever go blond but i want to BE blond for a second

surm, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:55 (eight years ago)

i'm having a bit of a problem with my concealer

surm, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:57 (eight years ago)

Has anyone tried Fenty yet?

Yerac, Friday, 9 March 2018 12:59 (eight years ago)

Yes. OK before I go on let me just say that you know how some people buy bags and shoes and that's their thing? Makeup and skincare are obviously mine. Also, I take full advantage of Sephora's return policy and prob return something if I don't absolutely love it. Case in point, the Fenty matte lipstick I bought. The formula was excellent (and I'm not really into matte lips mostly because I hate how they feel) but the color didn't work for me. I do have the universal gloss thing and I like that a lot. That's all I've tried. So far. The packaging is gorgeous.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:25 (eight years ago)

I have a makeup/skincare buying problem. AMA.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:25 (eight years ago)

Tell me about your concealor woes, Surm.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:26 (eight years ago)

concealER

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:30 (eight years ago)

Sometimes I want to start that whole beauty blog that we tried ages ago up again.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 9 March 2018 14:33 (eight years ago)

I would love a concealer and base (B.B. cream, tinted moisturizer, or foundation) rec - I have really uneven skin bc of splotchy freckles, and also really bad under eye darkness/puffiness. I bought clear frames a while ago and now the under eye area is more visible.

just1n3, Friday, 9 March 2018 14:53 (eight years ago)

OK obviously what works for me me might not for you because everyone is different etc. but I really love the following for myself.

Foundation - Loreal Pro-Glow. It's not full coverage but it's just enough for me when I feel like I need it and it leaves you looking glowy. Concealer - every day without fail because I have deep set eyes and bad circles - The only one I've bought for years now is the Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer. It's full coverage and it's amazing. You only have to use a tiny bit so it lasts ages.

I've heard people raving about the IT Cosmetics CC cream but I bought a small size and it was a little too thick for my liking. Returned.
