it feels like a fishing shirt off the clearance rack at REI

adam, Thursday, 14 September 2017 18:22 (eight years ago)

Fatigue pants with the front pockets stitched on the outside. Why do I only have one pair of you?

― El Tomboto, Friday, May 19, 2017 9:16 AM (three months ago)

this has been remedied btw https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/118437?page=beans-fatigue-pants-standard-fit

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 September 2017 18:44 (eight years ago)

they're opening a uniqlo in my metropolitan area next month and i am stoked

i ordered a bunch of everlane stuff a couple of years ago and sent it straight back. it's extremely cheap and nasty irl.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 14 September 2017 19:13 (eight years ago)

i do like my everlane backpack but their close never looked appealing.

my NYC hotel back in April was only a few blocks from Uniqlo

although I recently went in the Chicago one for about five minutes and was like "pssh this sucks" because it's like 1/5 of the size

mh, Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:23 (eight years ago)

El Tom, does LL Bean make things that aren't in pastel colors?!?

mh, Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:24 (eight years ago)

those jeans that feel like sweatpants you can get in Uniqlo both fascinate and scare me

Number None, Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:34 (eight years ago)

Yes, but see the fatigue pants are faded

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:36 (eight years ago)

the uniqlos are v variable store to store ime. i mostly just buy socks/underwear online from it now, and not as often as before, but when it first launched in london i remember there being two stores on the main shopping street and one always had way, way better stock.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:38 (eight years ago)

I will not comment at this time as to my ownership of the faux-denim joggers

mh, Thursday, 14 September 2017 20:45 (eight years ago)

Here is a shirt LL Bean makes that is not "pastel" at all and I should buy a couple more actually

Thank you for that picture of Reagan. I saw a documentary
of him recently and one of the main takeaways was what a
clothehorse he was. Also tall and lean and bow legged so that everything seemed to look good on him. He wore pocket squares in his presidential addresses!

Tombot, I am also on an LL Bean kick. But I'm afraid the
clothes are not made as nicely as they were in the past.

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 14 September 2017 22:41 (eight years ago)

i believe they call that shirt the "trader joe's c-suite"

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 14 September 2017 23:47 (eight years ago)

Virginia Plain! Glad to see you, where ya been?

I am having a hell of a time finding decent v-neck tees, shapely (for laydeez), not boxy, of a reasonable length (I'm tall), cotton with maybe a touch (5% max) of elasticity worked in for shaping, and not fucking tissue weight.

These things used to be jcrew/banana/gap staples, but damn if I can find any atm.

Sorry men's thread, need women's v-neck tees for less than like 70 bucks, thanks.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 15 September 2017 01:28 (eight years ago)

Hola, Q! I have good experiences with t shirts from Old Navy and
Gap but I think we are going for different things. I am very happy with a boxy aesthetic.

Virginia Plain, Friday, 15 September 2017 03:42 (eight years ago)

Helmut Lang was a big fan of Navy and Black as a combo

Kat Slater Slag meme (jed_), Saturday, 16 September 2017 01:20 (eight years ago)

quincie did you try land's end

El Tomboto, Saturday, 16 September 2017 01:26 (eight years ago)

I'm such a catalog kid

El Tomboto, Saturday, 16 September 2017 01:26 (eight years ago)

Tomboto, I'd steal your shit if it wasn't already your shit. I need to find a new funky 30-something dude style. I'm Jcrewed top to bottom, and it's as generic as it gets.

carpet_kaiser, Saturday, 16 September 2017 01:29 (eight years ago)

quincie, I am now informed that land's end has the boxiness problem and you should look into https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/TEESANDMORE.jsp instead

El Tomboto, Saturday, 16 September 2017 02:36 (eight years ago)

whywhywhywhywhy do the madewell vnecks have a POCKET? I hate a pocket on a T!

llbean and lands end are definitely known for boxy, but I have not taken a look in years; maybe things have changed.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 16 September 2017 12:40 (eight years ago)

navy and black are a classic combination, only depressing menswear blogs that insist you always wear fitted shirts think otherwise

plax (ico), Saturday, 16 September 2017 19:38 (eight years ago)

...if the black is your belt, shoes, or tie

interchangeable navy/black coat/sweater etc with black or v dark navy jeans and black boots is p much all i wear in winter. occasional grey and maybe a diff colour scarf, or just more black.

xpost.

sorry to rain on the anti-rules vibe

chinavision!, Monday, 18 September 2017 13:27 (eight years ago)

navy and black are totally cool with casual clothes! I like it a lot.
but we're talking about donald trump wearing a navy jacket with black pants!

chinavision!, Monday, 18 September 2017 13:29 (eight years ago)

oh yeah for sure that is awful, i don't think anyone disagrees.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Monday, 18 September 2017 13:35 (eight years ago)

trying to type "it's actually... good" but my fingers seize up and I end up coughing and spitting all over the keyboard

mh, Monday, 18 September 2017 14:05 (eight years ago)

it looks awful but all clothes look awful on him he is ugly and tacky and dresses badly. black and navy can be a fabulous combo in more formal clothing but all rules are for ppl with no inherent sense of style

Recommend me companies that make casual l/s button shirts of similar style and cut to Steven Alan's collegiate shirts. Their shape and length is perfect for me. $80 or under would be preferred.

I don't know what about the Steven Alan fit you're looking to replicate, but Kamakura has nice button-down collar shirts for *just* above your price range ($89): http://www.kamakurashirts.net/shop/g/gMSK052103681/

They're nice, and the collars are a little longer than the stingy ones you find on a lot of other brands these days.

I've just picked them up at thrift stores though.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:38 (eight years ago)

The other nice thing about Kamakura shirts (button down or not) is that their collars aren't fused, so they keep a softer shape.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:41 (eight years ago)

i have been eyeing kamakura shirts for a while, they have a store in midtown. in my experience japanese brands don't fit me well as i somewhat tall with a long torso--how's the length?

Mostly I like that they are a bit on the shorter side and manage to be just roomy enough for my non-skinny frame while still maintaining a slim profile (in part just because of good quality, non-billowy fabric).

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)

Kamakura could be good to at least check out! They've got stores in Manhattan you can visit and they're very friendly. Plus they've got a few different fits - so between all of them I figure something ought to work?

Or if you're patient you just keep browsing Goodwills all over the city...

chinavision!, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:49 (eight years ago)

Seriously I bought one shirt at Kamakura, which is great, but 4-5 from thrift stores. Plus loads of Brooks, Paul Stuart, Zegna, Canali, Eton, J Press, Tunrbull & Asser, and whatever else.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:50 (eight years ago)

NYC is gooood for used clothes.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)

i like my kamakura shirts, the sizing/fits were definitely funky when i bought them so if you can try on in person that would be much better than taking a million measurements like i did.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 3 October 2017 17:43 (eight years ago)

Those look a little more officey than what I have in mind, although I didn't go through all the styles. I want something I can wear untucked.

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)

I'm wondering if maybe I should try something like Gitman, or Gant, or maybe a brand like Band of Outsiders or APC, but those might be above my range unless I find a good sale.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Thursday, 5 October 2017 15:07 (eight years ago)

also very easy to alter the length of shirts. buy something that is the right shape and if it's too long to have it untucked, have it taken up. I do it myself on a decrepit Singer but am any alterations person will do it easy.
