hmm yeah, having the wedding party match is useful

the tradition around here is the groomsmen typically have matching rental tuxedos which makes things easier in a way, but if you can get a decent suit out of the deal that you'll wear again it's a good investment

mh, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 15:59 (eight years ago)

it's hard enough to buy a suit solo but going buying any clothes with another person is like... ffs

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:02 (eight years ago)

also there are v few good suit shops in london.

i see what you mean, but lol

standard recommendation for cheapish and on trend without looking like a footballer is go to a suit supply (http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/stores?countryCode=GB) and they will do a perfectly good job of fitting you. or if you're confident about your size, they have a standard internet-era return policy so just order a few online.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:21 (eight years ago)

if you're brother is paying and doesn't care about colours then take the opportunity to get a good charcoal suit (which is useful to have at short notice, i.e. funerals)

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:22 (eight years ago)

i think we have agreed it'll be grey so yeah that makes sense. would you recommend london suit shops? i know there's obv savile row etc but i don't care enough about formal wear to go there.

i prob should give suit supply another chance, last time i was looking for a suit i went into one and the service was horrendous so i left in anger.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:25 (eight years ago)

i like my suitsupply tux well enough. probably going to order from them again for a fall wedding.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:32 (eight years ago)

i was thinking savile row. in that area there are off the rack places you can go in and learn about what you like, but they are of course £££.

i'm out of the loop but there's obviously a ton of fast fashion places that will sell you a suit with tiny lapels for not much money. for a more classic look ... austin reed (not joking)? tm lewin does decent conservative work suits made by someone else. and there's a brooks brothers on regent st if you're willing to pay more.

suit supply service is ... eccentric. go once to get your size and get out if you find yourself dealing with someone not too bright but with great cheekbones. then order a few options online.

i've thought about maybe ralph lauren or something for the brother's wedding, they are not too expensive and look like a good safe style that everyone will like.

for the other one i really like this - it's expensive but i would wear it again, unlike a suit. http://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/cat/boglioli-hopsack-weave-double-breasted-wool-silk-and-cashmere-blend-jacket_427-3003656-BBP003N4302E/?previewAttribute=Grey

thought about just that with a white shirt, a tie, some black trousers and black leather shoes or chelsea boots, most of which i have already.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 16:40 (eight years ago)

You may laugh at me for saying so but some M&S suits are very nicely cut and have good quality fabrics too.

Cake hawn. (jed_), Wednesday, 9 August 2017 22:47 (eight years ago)

I think I've mentioned this before but being pretty close to mannequin proportions has had two effects on my life

1. as a clearance / final sale shopper, I will never find normal looking stuff in my size, so I must opt for the electric blue corduroy levis, and obviously I'm okay with that
2. when shopping for suit separates, I can basically go off the rack and be okay almost all the time - so I get the 42 orange blazer to go with the electric blue pants, and skip the measuring

this is a real opportunity to gauge physiological phenotype vs. character

El Tomboto, Thursday, 10 August 2017 03:30 (eight years ago)

You could try Cad and the Dandy - they're a comparatively affordable made-to-measure place (maybe even full bespoke with their more expensive options?). You'd choose the cloth, have a couple of fittings. Have a navy suit from them, and no complaints.

woof, Thursday, 10 August 2017 10:41 (eight years ago)

i will take a look for sure, bespoke would be good given the huge variety in shapes/sizes i've encountered trying on off the peg stuff.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 August 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)

i had a wedding to go to this summer but didn't want to buy a suit

i had to look good because i was the officiant

got a $900 navy brooks brother blazer on ebay for $90, can wear with different pants and its sort of like having different suits

the late great, Thursday, 10 August 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)

A Donegal tweed blazer in dark grey is my go to in that type of scenario. Will look good at a wintery wedding but versatile enough to wear throughout the season (and pretty much goes with anything). Magee do amazing jackets (bit biased obv)

Number None, Thursday, 10 August 2017 23:46 (eight years ago)

What are some good options for simple medium to dark blue non selvedgey-looking jeans in a slim but not skinny cut? I want something with a simple, fairly even wash, not a lot of distressing. Am I best just going with Levi's?

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Friday, 11 August 2017 00:28 (eight years ago)

Yes

El Tomboto, Friday, 11 August 2017 00:42 (eight years ago)

like go on amazon and order 8 pairs and return most of them, is my advice

El Tomboto, Friday, 11 August 2017 01:17 (eight years ago)

levi.com always has sales too

501s come in a million washes

marcos, Friday, 11 August 2017 01:33 (eight years ago)

what's a good pair of jeans with a "high" rise, that is, sits at the waist? i got a pair of 501 skinnys and those unfortunately sit below the waist. pretty awesome pair of jeans though

just another (diamonddave85), Monday, 21 August 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)

1955 501s

the late great, Monday, 21 August 2017 17:44 (eight years ago)

i think it also depends on the 501s. Levis seem to come in a completely arbitrary variety of shapes, so you can get all different kinds of 501s. My source on this is owning about 10 501s in the same size that all look totally different.

1955 501s have a really big top block

do i have to ride a motorcycle to be able to pull off these wide legs?

just another (diamonddave85), Monday, 21 August 2017 22:54 (eight years ago)

I think it was the ‘47 model repros I bought at the Levi’s store (“the original levi’s store”, if you ever played crazy taxi) and they were more waist rise

mh, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 01:04 (eight years ago)

I love the gilded age "anti-fit waist" - what an amazing idea

As an ilxor, I am uncompromising (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 02:24 (eight years ago)

lol I guess you can still buy anti-fit jeans but it would appear the term is now so loosely applied that the snake has eaten itself

As an ilxor, I am uncompromising (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 02:26 (eight years ago)

yeah i wear 1955s because they are anti fit but also somewhat modern

the rise on the 47s is a bit higher than the 55s true, but i can't pull the waist as high on the 47s because they're too slim for my uh bicyclist thighs

501ct

Dan I., Tuesday, 22 August 2017 12:29 (eight years ago)

tlg is thicc

mh, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 14:13 (eight years ago)

i'm gonna have to check out the vintage 501s, also considering a shrink-to-fit...

so the 501cts say 11.5" rise, sits at waist, but the 501 skinny says 12" rise but sits below waist. how does that work?

just another (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 14:20 (eight years ago)

skinny people apparently have elongated hips

mh, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 14:25 (eight years ago)

otm, changes year by year too. also they stretch out really fast. i just bought this pair of 501s below and they felt like a very slim fit but after a couple weeks of wearing them they are much roomier

are you a levi's model?

marcos, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 14:41 (eight years ago)

if you want to show off top of jeans just make model shirtless obv smh

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

hai i am tucking my oxford shirt into my jeans also not wearing a belt HAI

hmm I think this is pretty much my default way of wearing jeans

chinavision!, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)

never say never, i refuse to judge

i myself could not do it

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 19:54 (eight years ago)

i think i only wear an oxford if im dressed up and then im not wearing jeans

marcos, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 19:56 (eight years ago)

can't remember the last time i tucked in my shirt tbh, maybe a year ago?

marcos, Tuesday, 22 August 2017 19:57 (eight years ago)

the reason i'm searching for jeans that sit at the waist are so that i can tuck in my work shirts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

just another (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 22 August 2017 20:01 (eight years ago)

what, y'all dont have cultural icons who tuck w/o a belt?

psyched about my new old brooks brothers suede overcoat

http://www.altairnouveau.com/IMG_0844.jpg

heavy as hell

chinavision!, Monday, 4 September 2017 04:46 (eight years ago)

yeah I can feel the weight of that thing just looking at it

the last famous person you were surprised to discover was actually (man alive), Monday, 4 September 2017 04:52 (eight years ago)

it has a zip-in faux fur lining that adds a lot of weight. this is much heavier than any other overcoat I own.

chinavision!, Monday, 4 September 2017 05:06 (eight years ago)

Dope
