anyone have any recommendations on casual boots that i can wear everyday that will last a while? i've had a pair of suede birkenstock boots that i love but the soles on those wear out so fast, within months. the suede is nice but it looks a little dingy when they get dirty

i find clark's crepe soles not particularly durable.

i don't buy leather goods anymore so what i end up doing is just resoling my old red wing chukkas every few years. i don't think i ever found a boot whose soles didn't wear out within a winter or two (or three)

i used to get a year out of a pair of clarks in nyc (a walking city) but they looked like shit at the end and they weren't affordably repairable.

Blundstone and docs are good casual choices and very hardwearing - blundstones were my all-the-time boots for years. I haven't worn docs since I was a teenager, and would be a bit loth to now, just because they're so visibly docs and although I should probably accept I am basically the kind of middle-aged British man who wears docs a lot, I don't want to.

Agree on Clark's - high arches and wide feet meant I went through the soles on my Clark's desert boots quickly + the narrow fit put me towards clown shoe length.

I go for those English shoemakers that caek mentions now. I have a few pairs of brown boots (brogue; cap-toe grain leather; suede chukka - all on commando or dainite sole) and they are all very tough, very comfortable and very versatile. I wear clothes quite hard but they have just endured for years. Expensive, but I'm in England, so I can walk the sales or score seconds. Weak pound might make it worthwhile from abroad.

I never heard of Blundstone boots until they became fashionable in London around 1991 or 1992. A shop called PIL opened in Covent Garden that sold them, along with other Australian workwear brands like Hard Yakka. For several years I wore an elastic-sided steel-toecap version, and also a lace-up type I think they don't make anymore. After not wearing them for some years I bought a pair of 500s, maybe 15 years ago. At that time I alternated them with other footwear, mainly trainers, but nowadays I find walking in trainers to be bad for my back, plus I've reached a point where I feel I'm just too old for them, so Blundstone 500s are all I wear and probably ever will.

got a series of formal functions this winter and so i end up needing two different formal outfits (my brother is not keen for me to wear the same suit to his wedding that i wear to a prior wedding :/)

have to say it is p difficult - i buy most of my clothes online and that doesn't work so well with suits. also there are v few good suit shops in london. i figure i'll just get a blazer for the first wedding and buy separate trousers in order that i might come out of this with some items i wear again (my work is v informal dress code).

I take it you're in the wedding party or a groomsman? if it's just attending, to heck with it, a bunch of people with less money or sartorial depth have one suit they just wear to weddings and funerals

I have some semi-format blazers/jackets and use them on occasion, but I've been reusing the same black suit jacket forever since I never have occasion to wear it. I just wear a newer pair of pants.

so i'm best man for my brother's - at the first one i'm just a friend and it's more hipstery, prob less need to wear a suit. my brother has offered to buy me a suit for his wedding but i still need to choose it, and ideally match my other brother's suit, to add to the confusion.

essentially i'm left needing one blazer and one suit. perhaps shoes tho that's not so difficult. forgot how crazy and varied suit sizes are, trying on suits is a v good way to make yourself feel fat.

xpost that's what i normally do but think it's mandatory i wear a new suit on its first outing for my brother's wedding. i didn't push too much on it as want an easy life.

the tradition around here is the groomsmen typically have matching rental tuxedos which makes things easier in a way, but if you can get a decent suit out of the deal that you'll wear again it's a good investment

standard recommendation for cheapish and on trend without looking like a footballer is go to a suit supply (http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/stores?countryCode=GB) and they will do a perfectly good job of fitting you. or if you're confident about your size, they have a standard internet-era return policy so just order a few online.

if you're brother is paying and doesn't care about colours then take the opportunity to get a good charcoal suit (which is useful to have at short notice, i.e. funerals)

i think we have agreed it'll be grey so yeah that makes sense. would you recommend london suit shops? i know there's obv savile row etc but i don't care enough about formal wear to go there.

i prob should give suit supply another chance, last time i was looking for a suit i went into one and the service was horrendous so i left in anger.

i like my suitsupply tux well enough. probably going to order from them again for a fall wedding.

i was thinking savile row. in that area there are off the rack places you can go in and learn about what you like, but they are of course £££.

i'm out of the loop but there's obviously a ton of fast fashion places that will sell you a suit with tiny lapels for not much money. for a more classic look ... austin reed (not joking)? tm lewin does decent conservative work suits made by someone else. and there's a brooks brothers on regent st if you're willing to pay more.

suit supply service is ... eccentric. go once to get your size and get out if you find yourself dealing with someone not too bright but with great cheekbones. then order a few options online.

i've thought about maybe ralph lauren or something for the brother's wedding, they are not too expensive and look like a good safe style that everyone will like.

You may laugh at me for saying so but some M&S suits are very nicely cut and have good quality fabrics too.

I think I've mentioned this before but being pretty close to mannequin proportions has had two effects on my life

1. as a clearance / final sale shopper, I will never find normal looking stuff in my size, so I must opt for the electric blue corduroy levis, and obviously I'm okay with that
2. when shopping for suit separates, I can basically go off the rack and be okay almost all the time - so I get the 42 orange blazer to go with the electric blue pants, and skip the measuring

You could try Cad and the Dandy - they're a comparatively affordable made-to-measure place (maybe even full bespoke with their more expensive options?). You'd choose the cloth, have a couple of fittings. Have a navy suit from them, and no complaints.

i will take a look for sure, bespoke would be good given the huge variety in shapes/sizes i've encountered trying on off the peg stuff.

got a $900 navy brooks brother blazer on ebay for $90, can wear with different pants and its sort of like having different suits

A Donegal tweed blazer in dark grey is my go to in that type of scenario. Will look good at a wintery wedding but versatile enough to wear throughout the season (and pretty much goes with anything). Magee do amazing jackets (bit biased obv)

What are some good options for simple medium to dark blue non selvedgey-looking jeans in a slim but not skinny cut? I want something with a simple, fairly even wash, not a lot of distressing. Am I best just going with Levi's?

what's a good pair of jeans with a "high" rise, that is, sits at the waist? i got a pair of 501 skinnys and those unfortunately sit below the waist. pretty awesome pair of jeans though

i think it also depends on the 501s. Levis seem to come in a completely arbitrary variety of shapes, so you can get all different kinds of 501s. My source on this is owning about 10 501s in the same size that all look totally different.
