lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 19:26 (nine years ago)

yeah I've done that

i just washed a pair of jeans after a scant 4 months though because i spilled burrito juice on them :/

Living in AZ means you have to wash things more, more sweat, more swass, more bounce to the ouunce. Also, wearing pants here in the summer is v v dumb, flip-flops and shorts is just about the only option. i have to wear pants to work but best believe the first thing I do when I walk in the house is get some shorts on and shoes/socks off.

notice that it didn't say the bacterial content was low; just that it was unchanged

it's not very clear in that article but from reading this article: https://www.ualberta.ca/news-and-events/newsarticles/2011/01/jeansremainsurprisinglycleanafterayearofwear

it's more so an indication that raw jeans is not an environment where bacteria can breed more bacteria, which is as good as it gets in terms of clothing i would say

my understanding is that it was a very casual experiment, but i found this video which i have not watched, that might have more info:

Last year a microbiology student at the University of Alberta, Josh Le, wore the same pair of raw denim jeans for 15 months without washing them and then tested their bacterial content.

He tested them again two weeks after washing them and found the bacterial content to be much the same .

uh guys the result was that the bacteria level is the same after two weeks and 15 months, not 15 months and _immediately after washing_

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:34 (nine years ago)

ya

sorry i didn't mean 15 months and immediately after washing

i n f i n i t y (∞), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:39 (nine years ago)

just means that 15 months incubation makes bacteria impervious af

feel like the main thing that's getting glossed over here by all the sweat talk is farts

do you guys know how bad the ass on these jeans smells

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:46 (nine years ago)

maybe but that researcher couldnt find traces of ecoli or poop content so thats a minor miracle

i n f i n i t y (∞), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:48 (nine years ago)

I reread the article, there is absolutely no mention of whether poop content was detected or tested for

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:54 (nine years ago)

"I expected to find some bacteria associated with the lower intestine such as E. coli, but was surprised to find there weren't any, just lots of normal skin bacteria," said McQueen, who carries out research in the development of odour and its relationship to bacteria in textiles.

i trust my underwear to soak up my farts

-_- (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:55 (nine years ago)

again, no bacteria

do you think poop is 100% bacteria

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:55 (nine years ago)

bacteria is what spreads disease and such so it's what matters

i n f i n i t y (∞), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 20:58 (nine years ago)

good god people, wash your damn jeans. cold / delicate cycle + delicate detergent if you're worried about it.

marcos, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:05 (nine years ago)

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:21 (nine years ago)

lol

this is funny considering how i went to great lengths to explain my awesome hygienic practices

i n f i n i t y (∞), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:24 (nine years ago)

on that date you were mentioning?

mh, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:26 (nine years ago)

two dates iirc

the late great, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:28 (nine years ago)

two dates were cool and all of us smelled great and i can't even share the messages another lady sent me that weekend on here bc it's not appropriate

but i was referring to this

any garment that touches the sweatiest parts (underarms, ass crack, balls, feet) gets washed weekly

the rest is debatable

again, no bacteria

― mh, Tuesday, May 23, 2017 4:55 PM (forty-one minutes ago)

i forget how much it is but bacteria make up a ridiculous proportion of fecal mass, something like half the weight

k3vin k., Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:38 (nine years ago)

washing them cold, line dry, every 6 months or so will not affect the fade in a noticeable way ime

marcos, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:39 (nine years ago)

also bacteria don't just live on random surfaces forever, they need nutrients to survive. you could soak a pair of jeans in pure bacteria broth and they'd all be dead in 2 weeks

k3vin k., Tuesday, 23 May 2017 21:41 (nine years ago)

otm kev

not suggesting you wash them more than once every month or two but 15 months w/o washing is just gross

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/05/history-of-business-casual/526014/?single_page=true

There’s always a pushback as dress standards change. Many today might be tempted to watch an episode of Mad Men and think, “Why don’t people dress that nicely anymore?” But clothing standards are born of their time and place. What people wear is dynamic, but not capricious. So anyone who frowns upon the hoodie-wearing coworker one cubicle over would be well advised not to judge. If history is any indication, that’s what everyone will be coming to work in soon enough.
