ils thread for general menswear and men's clothing ish

this, by god. i find trouser buying *so* hard. picked up chinos and a cotton twill from cos recently and they're good, but p distinctively tapered which means they determine the rest of what you have to wear. maintaining outfits like this is expensive, inflexible and needs organisation so trousers that can exist within the broader categories of "smart" and "casual" are v handy.

got a pair of khaki jeans from asos a couple of years ago that are superb but otherwise... it's a struggle.

er referring to this:

i find a lot of chinos have a particularly preppy look that i don't want. hard to find alternatives to jeans as a result.

stone me if you must but i've got three pairs of top man chinos that are slim/fitted enough that they don't feel like preppie golf gear, and the fabric is surprisingly durable

Every year I make my pilgrimage to the Margaret Howell sample sale to get another pair of 'worker trousers'. Really well made, last forever and nice silhouette. If you're feeling flush I think they're about £180 normally (I think I paid £35 last year).

not sure I could pull those off, maybe just go for lightweight pants-looking joggers w/a straighter profile if you want an easier deployed version of that look

i wanted to suggest baggy sarouel pants but didn't know if i was in the right place. not $1000 yohji but 2nd hand black y's for men sarouel pants, go with everything and made to let your sweaty ballsac catch a breeze like windchimes on the front porch. also toraichi work pants like this which are breathable, light, adjustable on your calf, and cost next to nothing 2nd hand.

a lot of men looking slobby in shots cause they dont care leading to rules about never wearing shorts is the perfect example of an idiot male approach to wearing clothes

having said that yeah get some light summer pants theyre nice

tbh there is always some moment ruining shorts for every man, whether it's idiots in bad cargo shorts screaming on a balcony next door in your first apartment, or that kid in middle school who refused to wear anything other than basketball shorts, even in the dead of winter

ultimately fellas listen youre just gonna have to be able to subjectively judge if yr clothes look good

rules i guess can help but understand theyre really just rules of thumb not laws, and grown ups dont wear shots is really way too broad and also obviously not true, if you prefer to not wear shorts thats like fine, i mean i dont wear shorts that much but im not pretending its some universal rule of masculinity

if u want rules more targeted ones are prob better, like dont wear untucked shirts with jackets/blazers, which isnt to say no one can flip this look just that if youre a fashion rules type guy u prob cant

i'm wearing them with an untucked white dress shirt, sleeves rolled midway to my elbows (i had to work this morning in shirt and tie, decided to keep the shirt)

it's hard to find shorts that strike that perfect balance of just the right length (above knee, but not too much!) and juuuust the right tightness/bagginess

those are good shorts!

yeah and what's nice is they fit me and they make them every season in the same cut but a different material, so i have a little collection of them

they keep ratcheting up the price and they are now ridiculously expensive but you can usually find them on eBay for 60-80% off retail

as a result of brand loyalty i have ended up w some quite weird ones though - i have a linen oxford cloth pair in lifeguard red, only worked up the nerve to wear them once or twice so far

I don't have much fun fashiony stuff but I found a great 1960's brooks brothers olive gabardine suit at goodwill last weekend. I also found a 1970s sportcoat with a 1970s business card of massimo vignelli's in the pocket.

I've been going nuts on thrifting in nyc for the past 6 months and it's been pretty great.
