Haha testing people's reception of 80s memorabilia

F♯ A♯ (∞), Sunday, 19 February 2017 16:04 (nine years ago)

Was thinking big pink shirts and pleated trousers from saved by the bell

I always thought of it as an 80s show but it actually started in 89 so there you go

F♯ A♯ (∞), Sunday, 19 February 2017 17:22 (nine years ago)

yeah it was early 90s all the way

I that late 80s/early 90s era got brushed away as transitional because many styles and attitudes didn't cleanly map to new things that have been ascendent since then

mh 😏, Sunday, 19 February 2017 17:47 (nine years ago)

i kinda admire their success in conveying the slightly oversize medium shirt (which is prob just back to normal after slim fit foolishness) w/ that partic model and styling and whatnot

pleated khakis not so much

three weeks pass...

Very close to buying a black XBYO Adidas hoodie. Please convince me to save my money.

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:40 (nine years ago)

i haven't worn a hoodie in months believe it or not

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:41 (nine years ago)

http://www.adidas.co.uk/xbyo-hoodie/BQ3087.html

Yeah, I've smartened up my look over the winter months - lots of nice blazers and jackets and muted cotton jumpers but Bristol is almost unforgivably casual and spring is practically here now.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:42 (nine years ago)

oh that is a nice hoodie

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:43 (nine years ago)

i know... it's not that cheap either.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:44 (nine years ago)

im at the point now when i don't even really want to look at my winter clothes let alone wear them

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:57 (nine years ago)

especially my winter coats

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 15:58 (nine years ago)

of all the different types of garments i think i am the fussiest about coats. i can wear the same shirt, t-shirt, or pair of jeans every day of the year but i get tired of my coats and jackets after a few months of wearing them

marcos, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 16:00 (nine years ago)

Yeah I've more or less retired my winter coat (thank god), although it's still a bit chilly to go out without some sort of jacket or coat. I'm a bit stumped on that too - need an intermediary coat that looks good and can be worn interseasonally. Some sort of hood for the rain would be ideal although I always think hoods let them down a bit.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 16:02 (nine years ago)

what are some good options for affordable non-jogger sweatpants for actual trips to and from the gym? something a step above champion brand. also why is it so hard to find decent crewneck sweatshirts?

just another (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 17:33 (nine years ago)

i have a drawerful of crewneck sweatshirts, mostly acquired second hand tho

flopson, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 17:53 (nine years ago)

it's nice to be happy with a haircut

marcos, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 13:53 (nine years ago)

i used to hate getting haircuts but for a full year now i've liked every haircut i've had. it is a nice fresh feeling to get a haircut

marcos, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 13:54 (nine years ago)

i'm not bald yet but one thing that i think has helped me w/ haircuts is developing some fundamental honesty about my thinning hair. keeping it shorter is much better and quells the impulse to hide or obscure it

marcos, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 14:03 (nine years ago)

after mb 5 years of having it short i've been keeping some length over last cpl of cuts and i feel much happier with it. also finding a barbers where the laddish energy is of a tolerable character is a big plus

ogmor, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 15:18 (nine years ago)

my self confidence is pretty tightly correlated with how long it's been since my last haircut past week 3 or 4, yet i can rarely fit one in given my work schedule (how do barber shops stay in business? the ones here are all open 9-2pm mon-fri, and closed Sunday. Does EVERYONE who works nine to five get their hair cut on that sliver of a Saturday afternoon they stay open for us?) so i let it grow out and feel like an ugly schlub for weeks

flopson, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:06 (nine years ago)

can you take an early/long lunch and just have them rinse you out when you're done?

mh 😏, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:08 (nine years ago)

nah I work in an industrial park and don't own a car

flopson, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:10 (nine years ago)

the opening hours are insane but yes, saturday, or most open late an evening or two

ogmor, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:12 (nine years ago)

ugh yeah you're kind of screwed

I guess the backup would be to someone who takes appointments, so you're guaranteed a time? I've done the trad barbershop thing but places that cut both women's and men's hair tend to be less structured, take appointments, whatever

mh 😏, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:15 (nine years ago)

mobile hairdresser?

ogmor, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:18 (nine years ago)

I've gone to the same person to get my hair cut for the last 12 years and he always does a fantastic job, but on the occasions I have to go somewhere else, I almost always come away disappointed. This is especially hard now that I've moved away and am forced to find some other place. Always disappointing when you turn up for a haircut and everyone's being very icy and business-like and they just have the local radio station playing in the background. I know that sounds picky, but god if you've not got the imagination to put on some decent music, it's likely you're gonna give me a boring haircut.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:28 (nine years ago)

jogger pants appear to be really popular these days. I've never ever worn them apart from for lounging around the house though and I'm not sure I'm ready to join the revolution, but after buying that Adidas hoodie upthread, who knows. Basically my spring/summer wardrobe is fucked right now. I've got nothing but wool-rich jumpers and thick jackets to wear.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:31 (nine years ago)

I've been going to the same barber for 3 years. he always gives me scotch or a beer while i wait. he has decent music on. streams the jays games when its baseball season. has gone for lunch with me after cutting my hair before and picked up the bill. gives me a good haircut (unfortunately my traditional hairstyle now is a bit redolent of white nationalist but that's not his fault)

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 16:41 (nine years ago)

T-Shirts. Now there's a minefield. You'd think they'd be easy to get hold of, but so often they've got a naff slogan on the front or a huge brand name or they're in an odd fit. Just ordered a couple of new ones that looked fairly okay online. One of them looks great and fits fine, but I know that after a wash or two it'll shrink up and start showing my belt/belly. The other one is again, very lovely except for quite a wide open neck which I'm never too much of a fan of. But yeah, mostly it's designs. Plain Ts can be good but boring, but prints can look cheesy.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Thursday, 23 March 2017 15:40 (nine years ago)

sorry to be cos sales rep again but cos have really good plain tees. nice quality and little details like dropped shoulders or whatever that make them interesting.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 March 2017 16:47 (nine years ago)

i don't know what I'm going to do now that american apparel is out of business. i wear their plain white cotton t-shirts practically every day in the winter (under a dress shirt).

the late great, Thursday, 23 March 2017 16:50 (nine years ago)

xp great colors here http://www.cosstores.com/us/Men/T-shirts_Polo_shirts/Round-neck_t-shirt/22633351-25882198.1#c-15167326#Rel?PC=

someone please deliver us from this contemporary hellscape of muted rusts and mustards

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:30 (nine years ago)

dog latin

o totally

its v difficult to get tshirts that look good *and* fit well

i never liked solid colored tshirts, always preferred slightly worn or faded, so that always added another element of difficulty

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:32 (nine years ago)

also texture/feel has to be right

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:33 (nine years ago)

american apparel fine cotton jersey crew necks are the best t-shirts. i bought like 50 of them when they went out of business because i love them so much.

( ^_^) (Lamp), Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:02 (nine years ago)

yes lamp you are correct

I would have liked to do the same but I waited too long and now they are all gone :-(

maybe the brick and mortar still has a few ... guess I'd better get in this week

the late great, Thursday, 23 March 2017 21:08 (nine years ago)

i can vouch for the galleries lafayette own brand t-shirts. just my style. thin, soft cotton, fits me great, thin ring around the neck or whatever that's called.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 March 2017 22:26 (nine years ago)

american apparel never made a single garment that I didn't think was complete trash after a couple months of owning it. good riddance to a shitty company imo

marcos, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:45 (nine years ago)

I had some ok shirts for sure

mh 😏, Thursday, 23 March 2017 23:45 (nine years ago)
