feel like the problem with =frank and oaks collars isnt that theyre small its that they are shaped badly

, Monday, 11 April 2016 14:25 (ten years ago)

agree that different collars suit different face/body shapes differently

as a skinny, short person w/ a thin neck i appreciate smaller collars

ew lol, looks like a rusted bronze statue

de l'asshole (flopson), Monday, 11 April 2016 18:29 (ten years ago)

all my clothes are too small now. i bought them all super slim fitting and then was hit with a double whammy: the wash and fold people shrunk them all and i put on a bit of weight.

Treeship, Monday, 11 April 2016 18:31 (ten years ago)

i am looking forward to building a wardrobe, though, once my finances are in a position to do that.

really getting irritated lately with walnut-colored oxfords, every wall street douchebag has been wearing them with jeans for the last few years

hello stylish men, it's me, a visitor from another island.

i'm trying to buy a few suits (one for my upcoming declaration of eternal love and fealty, another for occasional occupational occasions), and i have a couple general sizing/tailoring questions.

the problems are related to my shape. i'm very skinny. here are my vital stats:

Neck: 14
Chest: 33 ½
Waist: 29 ½
Arm Length: 33
Pant Inseam: 29 ½
Height: 5'9.5"
(STR: 5 CHA: 8 DEX: 16 LCK: 18 INT: 5 WIS: 4)

i've been told by very stylish men that j crew is a good option for skinny guy suits. my plan is to buy a few, get as close as i can with the sizes, and have a tailor make final adjustments.

i think i'm good on the shirt and pant sizing, but what size would you all recommend for the suit jacket? here's the j crew sizing chart: https://www.jcrew.com/sizecharts/main.jsp?sizeChart=0,5

no matter which size or style (regular, short, or long) i go with, one of chest, waist, or arm length is off. for example, if i go with size small (regular), the waist and arm length are right, but the chest is 1.5 too large. and of course, if i select a size based off of my terrible chest, the waist and arm length are way too small. i was also considering going with an XS ("long fit"), which works with the chest and arm length, but is too small on the waist.

so basically, i guess my question is which is easier for a tailor to fix: a chest that's too large, or a waist that's too small?

yes, i know that i should just set up an appointment with a team of hotshot specialists and just do this shit in person

Karl Malone, Sunday, 17 April 2016 20:53 (ten years ago)

How much are you looking to spend? Indochino may be a good option here if you can swing $450-500 for a whole suit

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 17 April 2016 20:55 (ten years ago)

i am willing to fork out $$ for the wedding suit, so up to around $1000 would be ok (more if the suit grants me special abilities)

Karl Malone, Sunday, 17 April 2016 20:58 (ten years ago)

For $1000 you could probably get a decent made-to-measure suit. Would be higher quality and made to fit you exactly!

chinavision!, Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:15 (ten years ago)

or you could go to suitsupply and get their unlimited alteration option.

chinavision!, Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:16 (ten years ago)

I would probably recommend either of those over j crew. You'll get a more versatile suit that won't be quickly dated by skinny lapels/small jacket etc.

chinavision!, Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:17 (ten years ago)

I've always been interested in this place: http://mrnednyc.com/

chinavision!, Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:18 (ten years ago)

yeah, i might just set up a session with indochino early this week and do that. only problem is that, although i like their suits, i'm not sure if they'll be a good match for our wedding. the ceremony will be outside at a cidery so i suppose it's not the most formal of formal occasions.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:19 (ten years ago)

wait do you need it to be v formal or v casual? bcz I thought indochino ran the gamut depending on the fabric, lining, details, etc that you picked

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:27 (ten years ago)

kind of in between? the dress code in general is "dressy casual", but you know, i'd like to look slightly more dapper than the other guys in attendance

Karl Malone, Sunday, 17 April 2016 22:05 (ten years ago)

what time of year is the wedding?

chinavision!, Sunday, 17 April 2016 23:45 (ten years ago)

Late May. I'm doing all of this waaaaay too late.

Karl Malone, Monday, 18 April 2016 00:14 (ten years ago)

that might be tight for indochino

call all destroyer, Monday, 18 April 2016 00:16 (ten years ago)

the time of year and venue and formality you describe are crying out for a linen suit in tan btw

call all destroyer, Monday, 18 April 2016 00:18 (ten years ago)

to answer your general sizing question, a waist that's too small can usually be let out by 1.5" or so. a too-big chest can be tailored but it's a more expensive/tricky job and i wouldn't trust it to just anyone.

call all destroyer, Monday, 18 April 2016 00:21 (ten years ago)

thanks! and yeah, i'm thinking a lighter color as well

Karl Malone, Monday, 18 April 2016 00:49 (ten years ago)

yeah i have to get the lower back let out sometimes because of my pot belly and alan partridge fat back. not the end of the world. always go with something that fits the chest/shoulders.

this reminds me, if anyone in nyc wants a 40/32 antique white linen suit that i got from banana republic and then never wore then let me know.

tried to get some $ for it on styleforum ages ago but no takers

Wait mailman I think you're confused. Suit jackets at j crew do not come in s m l sizes. That's just a guide. Jackets will be sized at "36s" "38" "40" etc. which will get you closer to what you want. Most important thing is the shoulders are right - waist can be adjusted.

Really you should go get fitted. You'll also want to see how the jacket length is, as your height is just at the cusp of where short vs regular could look better depending on the cut.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Monday, 18 April 2016 02:12 (ten years ago)

I wore my suit for the for the first time in like 8 years last week. The shoulders hang over by like 2 inches. How did my shoulders get more narrow?

Jeff, Monday, 18 April 2016 02:16 (ten years ago)

Unless you used to be more muscular it's pretty unlikely. Maybe it's just a perception change?

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Monday, 18 April 2016 14:21 (ten years ago)

FWIW I like J Crew suits a lot for the price -- they use very good fabrics and the construction is nice.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Monday, 18 April 2016 14:29 (ten years ago)

It probably didn't fit great to start with. That combined with be much lighter probably makes it look worse.

Jeff, Monday, 18 April 2016 15:27 (ten years ago)

Hey ils, a bit of shameless self promotion, soz. I started an asos boutique and although I've not yet got much on there, I thought I'd share. Come Monday it should have 70ish more products on it. Please take a look.

What brands do you guys like for tees? Preferably $50 or less, willing to do graphic but wary of looking like a club douche or faux-surfer.

JWoww Gilberto (man alive), Sunday, 24 April 2016 20:00 (ten years ago)

$50!!! I'd never spend more than like $25. You must have awesome tees.

Jeff, Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:41 (ten years ago)

american apparel

de l'asshole (flopson), Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:21 (ten years ago)

what about sub-$10 tees? uniqlo used to be my go-to but it seems like they fell off?

VC, Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:35 (ten years ago)

have to say I hate AA tees, the torso is too thin for my taste, I tried a bunch from them last year and wore them for a little while but now I hate them

I've been wearing j crew broken in pocket tees for about 10 years, they are great. Sizing has changed throughout the years even though I've only gained about 5 lbs, I swear the medium is now a small and the large is now a medium. I don't like all the colors they have but I usually find one or two colors I like

marcos, Sunday, 24 April 2016 23:52 (ten years ago)

Oh I've never actually dropped $50 on a tee, I was just thinking if there's some brand that people say is worth it. I don't have a ton of tees, and the ones I have that I like are from Gustin or random one-offs.

JWoww Gilberto (man alive), Monday, 25 April 2016 02:23 (ten years ago)

can't stand pocket tees, but then I have an unfeasibly large chest so anything that draws attention to that area can do one

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Monday, 25 April 2016 12:07 (ten years ago)

ha yea I am v skinny with not very broad shoulders at all so that's why I like pocket tees

marcos, Monday, 25 April 2016 13:19 (ten years ago)

I know people rep for reigning champ, for example, and their tees run like $45-50, some more. But idk if spending on a tee is as justifiable as spending on a sweatshirt (or whether either are justifiable, for that matter).

JWoww Gilberto (man alive), Monday, 25 April 2016 14:27 (ten years ago)

$25 is the most i'll spend on a t-shirt i think

marcos, Monday, 25 April 2016 14:27 (ten years ago)

Up to this point in my life that's p much what I've spent. Maybe $30.
