Man I was just browsing Frank & Oak and I'm really annoyed at how most of their shirts have tiny collars -- those are fine for some but they don't work with all face/body shapes imo.

i'm not really sure what frank and oak offers other than the ability for ppl to say they're not shopping at j crew?

btw any suggestions on where to get good swim trunks for not too much? I think it's time to retire the same old wal-mart pair I've been using for years.

i have no idea what too much to you is but i have katin trunks and i like them a lot.

anybody know of a good place for ordering pleated men's pants that don't look terrible? I have a pair of J crew cotton single pleated pants, with turn ups, in a dark navy that I like, but they don't make it any more. all my clothes are too small now. i bought them all super slim fitting and then was hit with a double whammy: the wash and fold people shrunk them all and i put on a bit of weight.

i am looking forward to building a wardrobe, though, once my finances are in a position to do that.

hello stylish men, it's me, a visitor from another island.

i'm trying to buy a few suits (one for my upcoming declaration of eternal love and fealty, another for occasional occupational occasions), and i have a couple general sizing/tailoring questions.

the problems are related to my shape. i'm very skinny. here are my vital stats:

Neck: 14
Chest: 33 ½
Waist: 29 ½
Arm Length: 33
Pant Inseam: 29 ½
Height: 5'9.5"
(STR: 5 CHA: 8 DEX: 16 LCK: 18 INT: 5 WIS: 4)

i've been told by very stylish men that j crew is a good option for skinny guy suits. my plan is to buy a few, get as close as i can with the sizes, and have a tailor make final adjustments.

no matter which size or style (regular, short, or long) i go with, one of chest, waist, or arm length is off. for example, if i go with size small (regular), the waist and arm length are right, but the chest is 1.5 too large. and of course, if i select a size based off of my terrible chest, the waist and arm length are way too small. i was also considering going with an XS ("long fit"), which works with the chest and arm length, but is too small on the waist.

so basically, i guess my question is which is easier for a tailor to fix: a chest that's too large, or a waist that's too small?

yes, i know that i should just set up an appointment with a team of hotshot specialists and just do this shit in person

How much are you looking to spend? Indochino may be a good option here if you can swing $450-500 for a whole suit

i am willing to fork out $$ for the wedding suit, so up to around $1000 would be ok (more if the suit grants me special abilities)

For $1000 you could probably get a decent made-to-measure suit. Would be higher quality and made to fit you exactly!

or you could go to suitsupply and get their unlimited alteration option.

I would probably recommend either of those over j crew. You'll get a more versatile suit that won't be quickly dated by skinny lapels/small jacket etc.

yeah, i might just set up a session with indochino early this week and do that. only problem is that, although i like their suits, i'm not sure if they'll be a good match for our wedding. the ceremony will be outside at a cidery so i suppose it's not the most formal of formal occasions.

wait do you need it to be v formal or v casual? bcz I thought indochino ran the gamut depending on the fabric, lining, details, etc that you picked

kind of in between? the dress code in general is "dressy casual", but you know, i'd like to look slightly more dapper than the other guys in attendance

the time of year and venue and formality you describe are crying out for a linen suit in tan btw

to answer your general sizing question, a waist that's too small can usually be let out by 1.5" or so. a too-big chest can be tailored but it's a more expensive/tricky job and i wouldn't trust it to just anyone.

yeah i have to get the lower back let out sometimes because of my pot belly and alan partridge fat back. not the end of the world. always go with something that fits the chest/shoulders.

Wait mailman I think you're confused. Suit jackets at j crew do not come in s m l sizes. That's just a guide. Jackets will be sized at "36s" "38" "40" etc. which will get you closer to what you want. Most important thing is the shoulders are right - waist can be adjusted.

Really you should go get fitted. You'll also want to see how the jacket length is, as your height is just at the cusp of where short vs regular could look better depending on the cut.

I wore my suit for the for the first time in like 8 years last week. The shoulders hang over by like 2 inches. How did my shoulders get more narrow?

Unless you used to be more muscular it's pretty unlikely. Maybe it's just a perception change?

FWIW I like J Crew suits a lot for the price -- they use very good fabrics and the construction is nice.

It probably didn't fit great to start with. That combined with be much lighter probably makes it look worse.
