weird people wear plaid shirts and monkstraps?

i work with software engineers who almost all wear black. some wear expensive technical wear.

one of the software engineers where i work does kind of a punk rockabilly thing

another wears outdoor gear and has a huge beard

the lead engineer has great style, is prob in his 50s, kind of schlumpy academic a little but w/ enough nice touches that it works well

the menswear blogger ca. 2010 look (ie double monkstraps, plaid, sports jackets, outdoorsman bags, etc.) is definitely a thing in tech, but i will concede that it mostly among the product guys

i have gone 28 years w/o needing a solid business casual wardrobe but now i need one!! ties, belts, pants, some shirts, etc! i want cool fashion-forward patterns and colors but don't have more than $150-200 to spend! Is there rly much else bedises h&m/zara/uniqlo/forever 21 besides express/jcrew sale racks?

Yeah nord rack is a good bet if you want something outside of standard basics.

ties are fun for sure! but i would skip them for now if that budget is firm, and until you feel the vibez at your new place

I was actually gonna recommend lands end sales for basics, like if you just want good cheap chinos in a variety of colors -- like a lot of retailers that used to be boxy-only, they have several fits now I think and you can get pretty slim ones if that's to your liking.

lands end slim work well for me which is to say they're not that slim

yeah I think they have a slim and a slimmer "tailored"? I have a pair of each, and the tailored is definitely snug on my slightly beefy legs, but not to the point of making it look like I'm wearing tights or anything.

easy enough to order a few things from them and send back whatever isn't quite the right fit. they're scarily consistent so once you've dialed in your sizes you're set.

ah ok i am the opposite, i have only bought pants and have bought a few styles in multiple colors only to find that the gray chinos are a lot snugger than the navy chinos and whatnot.

Again I'd recommend Cos. Their stuff is just sleeker. Though personally I hate the tiny collars on their shirts, but the trousers and jackets are nice.

I also like Topman if you get the premium stuff (which is still fairly cheap)

Man I was just browsing Frank & Oak and I'm really annoyed at how most of their shirts have tiny collars -- those are fine for some but they don't work with all face/body shapes imo.

i'm not really sure what frank and oak offers other than the ability for ppl to say they're not shopping at j crew?

IDK, they have some good patterns but def not rocking a tiny collar

btw any suggestions on where to get good swim trunks for not too much? I think it's time to retire the same old wal-mart pair I've been using for years.

anybody know of a good place for ordering pleated men's pants that don't look terrible? I have a pair of J crew cotton single pleated pants, with turn ups, in a dark navy that I like, but they don't make it any more. feel like the problem with =frank and oaks collars isnt that theyre small its that they are shaped badly

agree that different collars suit different face/body shapes differently

as a skinny, short person w/ a thin neck i appreciate smaller collars

all my clothes are too small now. i bought them all super slim fitting and then was hit with a double whammy: the wash and fold people shrunk them all and i put on a bit of weight.

i am looking forward to building a wardrobe, though, once my finances are in a position to do that.
