the late great, Friday, 25 March 2016 16:45 (ten years ago)

also i don't think quality is quite up to par with price

the late great, Friday, 25 March 2016 16:45 (ten years ago)

it's not "bad" stuff but at that price point you can get way better shit

I can't believe I've never checked this thread out before.

Guys I'm on the hunt for a long-sleeved linen shirt for the summer, something very unstructured ... to be worn untucked, maybe half unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up, on the hottest days. would love to find something in a deep, intense indigo, but other colors might work too (maybe grey, or cream). I was at uniqlo the other day but found their linen shirts sort of meh. of course they were only 40 bucks too. I'd be willing to pay twice that (maybe even more) for something really special by way of texture and color. So if anyone has any ideas re online sources (or b&m in the northeast usa), pls let me know.

enough with the monk strap shoes

chinavision!, Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:32 (ten years ago)

they seem to be a thing among extremely uncool software engineers right now (that's not me btw)

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:39 (ten years ago)

i don't see anyone wearing them really - tho i don't see anyone dressing partic formally.

i think they're fine for a very formal occasion where you're wearing a suit, but they don't translate to casual at all.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:43 (ten years ago)

knew a lame dude who waxed rhapsodic about double strap monk strap shoes

龜, Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:45 (ten years ago)

they seem like the kind of thing a dressy RNC intern would wear

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:49 (ten years ago)

or possibly a nazi

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:55 (ten years ago)

I think I saw an uncool software engineer wearing them on the train this morning

chinavision!, Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:56 (ten years ago)

I used to see double monks a bit more a year or two ago. Had been thinking/hoping they'd peaked - I've never been taken with them and they feel past the point where they're in the formal-but-interesting spot.

woof, Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:00 (ten years ago)

caek if you work with uncool software engineers, please report if one of them showed up in monk strap shoes today

chinavision!, Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:02 (ten years ago)

I'm going to have a check around here right now

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:19 (ten years ago)

lol

woof, Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:20 (ten years ago)

nothing wrong with double monks but they're best for occasional use only.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:25 (ten years ago)

yeah, two occasions - 1 when you're alone and 2 when nobody can see you, heyo

other people systems as applicable (El Tomboto), Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:52 (ten years ago)

quadruple monks or gtfo

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:19 (ten years ago)

I have seen monkstraps I like on the street, but they are probably very expensive monkstraps, and the default for me is no go.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:21 (ten years ago)

To me they seem like they're for people who equate wearing a suit with being some kind of movie badass spy.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:22 (ten years ago)

they go hand in hand with the circa 2013 hitler youth haircut in my experience

no... must have more straps

lag∞n, Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:34 (ten years ago)

happily i work with software engineers who ignore fashion, no the plain shirt and monkstrap kind

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:34 (ten years ago)

*not

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 14:34 (ten years ago)

weird people wear plaid shirts and monkstraps?

i work with software engineers who almost all wear black. some wear expensive technical wear.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:07 (ten years ago)

missed comma leads to superfluous question mark

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:07 (ten years ago)

one of the software engineers where i work does kind of a punk rockabilly thing

marcos, Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:08 (ten years ago)

another wears outdoor gear and has a huge beard

marcos, Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:09 (ten years ago)

the lead engineer has great style, is prob in his 50s, kind of schlumpy academic a little but w/ enough nice touches that it works well

marcos, Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:10 (ten years ago)

boot upthread two straps and two shades from gothlite

yellow despackling power (Will M.), Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:49 (ten years ago)

the menswear blogger ca. 2010 look (ie double monkstraps, plaid, sports jackets, outdoorsman bags, etc.) is definitely a thing in tech, but i will concede that it mostly among the product guys

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:38 (ten years ago)

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:35 (ten years ago)

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:36 (ten years ago)

stevie be sure to check jcrew factory as well as regular jcrew

p.s. are you sure you need a tie at a university?

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:41 (ten years ago)

the cheap ties are at tie bar btw

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:41 (ten years ago)

i mean i don't need one but it'd be cute to acquire a few choice ones i think

we have a c21 in philly as well as a nord rack! i should hit those first prob

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:43 (ten years ago)

oh shit tie bar is rad

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:45 (ten years ago)

Yeah nord rack is a good bet if you want something outside of standard basics.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:45 (ten years ago)

ties are fun for sure! but i would skip them for now if that budget is firm, and until you feel the vibez at your new place

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 7 April 2016 22:45 (ten years ago)

nord rack, zara, H&M

honestly though and I know it's laaaaaaame but I get pretty decent stuff from landsend.com on clearance

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Friday, 8 April 2016 00:49 (ten years ago)

also my work BFF totally work double monk strap shoes today. he's definitely in the "tech product guy" character class though

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Friday, 8 April 2016 00:51 (ten years ago)

I was actually gonna recommend lands end sales for basics, like if you just want good cheap chinos in a variety of colors -- like a lot of retailers that used to be boxy-only, they have several fits now I think and you can get pretty slim ones if that's to your liking.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 8 April 2016 01:10 (ten years ago)

lands end slim work well for me which is to say they're not that slim

call all destroyer, Friday, 8 April 2016 01:18 (ten years ago)

yeah I think they have a slim and a slimmer "tailored"? I have a pair of each, and the tailored is definitely snug on my slightly beefy legs, but not to the point of making it look like I'm wearing tights or anything.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 8 April 2016 01:30 (ten years ago)

easy enough to order a few things from them and send back whatever isn't quite the right fit. they're scarily consistent so once you've dialed in your sizes you're set.

bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Friday, 8 April 2016 01:58 (ten years ago)

i have...not found that to be the case but glad you have
