yeah it's not really a fair comparison. i would say while you *can* spend 200-300 on a suit, you shouldn't expect too much from it. if the fabric felt light or weird or something, well that's because it was 200 dollars.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 02:08 (ten years ago)

Jordan, if you're relatively inexperienced buying suits, your best bet is a dept store like Lord & Taylor or Nordstrom. I don't know if you can quite get below $300, but you might be able to do something decent for $400. The guys in those stores know how to fit a suit, you get the alterations done there usually free, and they can also suggest shirts and ties that go well with the suit.

You might also try Jos. A. Bank -- not the trendiest suits but the quality is pretty good for the price. The only problem is they have those obnoxious 2-for-1 deals, so I don't know if there's an easy way to buy one suit cheap. My brothers' wedding party had to buy Jos A Bank suits that came in a "stretch" wool, which is not something I'd normally wear but it was fine and probably suitable for hulk thighs.

If you're really insistent on $200-300, you might try Macy's, but just know that at that price point there are certain significant quality differences in construction and material.

Finally, a lot of these places give you an extra discount if you open a credit card, so there's always that option. Also you could try negotiating with the salesmen a little - they work on commission in dept stores and they may have a little flexibility.

Suits don't cost more than wedding dresses.

AlanSmithee, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 08:56 (ten years ago)

Suits are so annoying to buy. The whole thing from having to deal with a salesman, trying on so many things, getting shirts/ties, the altering, the waiting for your suit.

Jeff, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:59 (ten years ago)

The one suit I have I bought at Jos A Bank about 8 or so years ago. It's just horrible, the fit sucks, despite what the guy selling it to me kept saying. And he picked out a shirt that was just bellowing, even after alterations. Fuck that guy. And now it's the only suit I have and it's way too big.

oh i missed wedding dress in the original post. there's a huge range on wedding dresses tbh, certainly possible to find one for less than suitsupply prices.

xp yeah that's basically all the suits I bought at Men's Wearhouse back when I was in the military and none of us enlisted guys had any clue what we were doing. They all disappeared over the years, like I don't even remember throwing them out or whatever, I suspect they may have just gotten left in closets while I packed up everything else.

I haven't had a proper suit made in years. There's a Knot Standard showroom right up the street from me, I'll probably go there when the time comes and I can't find anything better to do with my money, like put it in my daughter's college fund or buy literally anything else that comes in under $600.

And I feel like I should have a nicer one in case I lose my job/weddings/funerals. Was thinking about this place once since they are local http://propersuit.com 850 for the cheapest, but I have no idea if it is worth that.

They offer different cuts now like p much every other suit maker -- they have a slim (i.e. normal-fitting) suit and an extra-slim (i.e. slim) suit. My suit really wasn't bad considering I paid like $250 with the group discount (whole groom's party wore same suit).

I thought about suggesting used suits too, but you need to know your measurements and a little bit about how a suit should fit. If someone can go with you who knows more, you could try consignment shops in well-off neighborhoods -- sometimes you can luck out. Most important thing in the jacket fit is the shoulders bc that's pretty much impossible to change, and after that probably the length. If it's a little too baggy it can be tapered.

if it's possible (location and cost) I'd really suggest just going to suitsupply. you're much more likely to come away with a pretty well-made, well-fitting suit. the napoli starts at $399, plus tailoring.

this guy wears and enjoys good suits on the reg i honor his advice^

lag∞n, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:44 (ten years ago)

if your legs want a different size suit than your torso, then the cost might be more like $700, which might be out of budget. I also have this problem. $700 gets you the opportunity to mix/match pants & jackets of different sizes, and gets you unlimited alterations.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:47 (ten years ago)

I've avoided suitsupply so far because I don't like the way the suits shown on their website fit the models -- jackets too long, pants too thigh-hugging. Models are also just douchey looking and maybe that colors my perception. But they have a location really close to my office, so maybe I will check them out next time I need a suit and see if I can find something I like.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:49 (ten years ago)

everyone hates their website and marketing! but they have a pretty good product. But for us guys with big thighs you really might need to do the... purple line? or something? but the thing where you can get separate pants/jacket. $700 is not cheap, but it's not bad for a well-made & well-tailored suit. I just wish they offered pants w/pleats.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:53 (ten years ago)

oh it's 'blue line personal tailoring'

chinavision!, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:55 (ten years ago)

"Our Blue Line Personal Tailoring program offers more variety than our In-Store Tailoring by giving you the option to purchase jackets and pants separately, as well as adding a matching waistcoat. The suit is tailored from scratch, with your choice of fabric and a range of basic alteration options that can be selected in the store, ensuring a unique and personally tailored suit."

chinavision!, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 17:56 (ten years ago)

a suit is $649 for that.
