not true really? there is a lot of positivity itt and whenever someone posts something they like or bought recently it is generally frowned upon to shit on them for it, good vibes are instead encouraged

marcos, Thursday, 21 January 2016 15:51 (ten years ago)

i'm not getting a smug or judgmental vibe from this thread at all, and there is plenty of sincere sartorial interest and appreciation

marcos, Thursday, 21 January 2016 15:51 (ten years ago)

marcos, Thursday, 21 January 2016 15:52 (ten years ago)

lagoon is zinging people like all the time for zinging people super ironic if you think about it

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 January 2016 16:03 (ten years ago)

I'm not a zinger. I just come here for high-level conversation about menswear.

i like Hoka, very comfortable (and give you about 1.5" height boost!)

rip van wanko, Friday, 22 January 2016 18:32 (ten years ago)

talking about height boost I saw some eytys recently and i think they're a great looking canvas shoe but i just cannot get with that goddamn huge midsole

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 22 January 2016 18:35 (ten years ago)

I wear Hokas.

p sure the good opinions on clothes are the ones that exactly mirror my own except when im being a daring free-thinker then the good opinion to have is the exact opposite of my own

otherwise: i need a new parka because of the onslaught of winter but i really hate parkas

-san (Lamp), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:18 (ten years ago)

sometimes you gotta protect yourself with an ugly parka so you can keep enjoying other clothes for a long time

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:25 (ten years ago)

parkas r good imo im a parka enthusiast

lag∞n, Friday, 22 January 2016 19:33 (ten years ago)

i think i actually posted upthread abt a parka i bought that i don't hate, but it looks like any other parka. i mostly like it bc it feels of good quality and keeps me toasty when the wind whips my ass

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:35 (ten years ago)

i like parkas, i don't live somewhere cold enough to need a substantial coldweather one though so im more talking about lightweight robert de niro in deer hunter 60/40 mountain parka.

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:40 (ten years ago)

lagoon you once described a parka as a personal ecosystem which made me see their value

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:40 (ten years ago)

i feel like there is a portland-based outerwaear company (with a kind of dumb name, possibly? can't remember) who had some decent light parkas like that, jim in glasgow!

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:42 (ten years ago)

nvm, found them, poler, not much of a jacket game there

Will v. Maim (Will M.), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:43 (ten years ago)

I like this sierra designs one http://www.sierradesigns.com/product/mountain-parka
although again super light, not a parka parka

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:44 (ten years ago)

sort of like a field jacket, that one.

p happy with that "public school" parka the brand name of which we discussed itt, been wearing it a lot. coats get boring, you need a few coats.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Friday, 22 January 2016 19:53 (ten years ago)

i stopped by Neiman-Marcus the other day and they were letting Canada Goose parkas go (relatively) cheap, perfect storm of spring on its way and fading fad

rip van wanko, Friday, 22 January 2016 19:53 (ten years ago)

So, the most prominent new menswear store in Chicago is closing (Haberdash, big sale happening), and, along with Four Pins folding, it made me wonder about a menswear bubble. If these $350 work shirts and Red Wing boots and such really do last for decades, then it makes sense that there would be a surge of buying without a follow-up surge to replace all these great Filson/etc clothes bought in 2009-2015.

... (Eazy), Saturday, 23 January 2016 04:57 (ten years ago)

If I ever pay $350 for a work shirt, congratulate me on my promotion to C-level or winning the lottery.

Jeff, Saturday, 23 January 2016 11:38 (ten years ago)

four pins always felt like a p shoestring operation to me. feel like all you read is about how menswear is booming.

Has anyone tried Jack Erwin?

http://snip.ly/2JeK?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Sniply&utm_content=GQ#http://www.gq.com/story/meet-jack-erwin-designer-dress-shoes-for-200

I'm skeptical, but I did recently shop for dress shoes in the $200 range and was surprised at how little there is -- most stuff is either cheaper and the quality is not great or considerably more expensive.

The styling looks decent. I sort of question how these young bros have any expertise in shoemaking, and it seems like there are about 1000 companies run by 25-year-olds who claim to make high-end menswear for half the price by cutting out the middlemen.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 16:59 (ten years ago)

i don't think they do have any experience in shoemaking--they source from portugal, sell direct, and use decent, but not top-end materials and construction method.

i believe they use a blake stitch instead of goodyear welting if you care. meermin will do goodyear welting for about the same price.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 17:41 (ten years ago)

I bought some Jack Erwin bluchers about a year ago—my first pair (and still only) of high-ish-end shoes. I love them, but I don't have much to compare them to. Mine are blake, but some models are goodyear-welted. Customer service was great.

If something happens in the next few years and I can more easily afford Aldens or Allen-Edmonds, I'll go with those, but if, as I expect, I'm in approximately the same financial situation, I'd buy another pair of JEs. I also looked at Meermins. Charles Tyrwhitt is another option in the ~$200 range.

I find this delightfully utilitarian and it will likely be the replacement for my now-ragged bail-out-bag which I have finally worn holes into. It's five times the price but I think I'm ready to move on from the ballistic nylon & velcro "range bag" style.

service desk hardman (El Tomboto), Thursday, 28 January 2016 19:54 (ten years ago)

ebay is still great for shoes! I get allen edmonds regularly for about $70.

any tips for an inexpensive slim fit suit for a wedding (mine)? tried Express and that's been the closest thing so far, but i just couldn't find a pair of pants that fit my weird lower body, and i think the lightweight material (wool?) didn't help.

considering ordering something from asos to try on, but it seems like i'd have to get pretty lucky to get a good fit, or else do a lot of sending back.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Monday, 1 February 2016 20:50 (ten years ago)

Where do the pants not fit, the waist? The seat? A little tailoring is pretty much expected with a suit.

And what's your price range?

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 1 February 2016 20:53 (ten years ago)

i'm a fit dude but have always had mutant calf muscles and big thighs + butt, so yeah, it's hard to find pants that are not too loose in the legs but that i can also button comfortably. so do i get something where the waist fits and have the legs tailored, or vice versa? sorry to be an idiot about this, i've avoided ever buying a suit or getting anything tailored until now.
