tbh there are some outfits where like i can only wear an XS button down but i only own like 1 so i only wear those outfits like 3 times a year

my boyf buys XS from Uniqlo and H&M and he's like 5'5" and prob 130 or so, v tiny, and they are quite form fitting

buttons on my ($$$$$$$) epaulet oxford broke in like a month, pants split in the crotch within 2 months, buyer beware imo

daaaaaang that sucks. Spouse has a few pairs of pants and they have all worn fine. For shirts he likes Hugh and Crye and stocks up when they have a sale at their kinda-b&m store in town.

the reluctance of joe public aka me to obey the laws of fashion and circle away from the fitted, minimal style and revert to pleats, wide lapels, big shoulders etc. seems fairly understandable tho: the former is a lot easier to pull off than the latter.

also without the disposable income to blow on a number of super nice new pieces would be hard to transition from one to the other, like if you go to j crew and buy some pleated pants to go into your rotation youre just going to look like a dork with some pleated pants when you were them rather than someone who is au courant with the latest trends

I bought a couple of Ann Mashburn dresses back in my corporate whoring days. Now that I'm on a social worker salary, my plan is to just buy one dress during each of the sales (in January and August, the only time anything is discounted) and that will be more or less my wardrobe purchases for the year. Once I learned how to sew I really started to appreciate the quality--Hong Kong and French seams, blind-stitched hems, etc. Takes a ton of extra time (and fabric), but the result is not just lovely but also wears like iron.

Protip: sale is 25% this week, but will be 30% next week and 40% (and sometimes more) the next. Stuff sells out quickly, though.

yeah, sm has beautiful-looking stuff. wish i could try it on. also love that the sale section is organized by color like any good thrift store.

After having my most recent J. Crew sale sweater get stretched from a single use (I pushed up the sleeves and when I pushed them back down they had already lost their tightness), I want to start stepping up my sweater game a little. What's the best place to get sweaters of similar style to your basic J. Crew wool crewnecks and v-necks but of considerably higher quality and durabiltiy, and can I do that with a $100 ceiling?

hmm...my first thought would be to look at ledbury sale or howard yount sale. don't have experience with either brand's sweaters but the price should be in range and they should be a step up from j crew.

Tracer can you tell me more about your Benetton sweater experience? All wool or blend? Are they itchy? I looked at the women's v-necks and my concern is itchiness (I'm normally fine with merino) and the bottom band. I hate when the bottom band is smaller than the body of the sweater and rides up, making the sweater double up over the band, if that makes sense.

man alive the best trad wool sweaters in the us are from o'connells. they are over $100 though.

We actually have a Benetton store in my neighborhood, which is odd. They seem to only have strange locations in NYC. It's also very small and women only. And I heard it might be closing (maybe even already closed?). But my wife has a sweater from there and it's actually super nice, maybe her nicest one.

I think plan A is going to be ebay or consignment shop for BB. Plan B is to try an Everlane sweater (I think people ITT like them, yes?) Plan C is order a Benetton sweater.

Plan D is you're fired.

yes i've definitely noticed that their locations are v strange/women only nowadays. i think we got out at the right time.

quince i can't speak for the ladies' gear but their men's sweaters are super soft (and their v-necks are, gulp, a bit THIN) - no bottom cinching issues that i've noticed

I sent back an everlane knit. It felt cheap for the price and shed a lot in 10 mins of wearing.

cos sweaters are generally v good at their price point. big fan of their sweatshirts as well.

i had some good luck picking up used pringle of scotland sweaters over the last few years. even with the cost of the occasional repair i dont think ive ever paid over US$50 for one

girls generally look great in overalls. i blame dexy's.

haha i was expecting you to tell me about the terrible cultural overtones they carry and embarrass me. agreed that its hard to find (used) ones that fit nicely theyre often bagged out and not in a handsome draped armani model way

they are kinda bad quality ime, tho i haven't had one in a good few years, tend to get misshapen like that

i have one that is kind of batwing it's so misshapen but i wear it at home and it keeps me warm
