i like bb shirts and imo it doesnt matter if the fit is a little CFO-ish b/c you will will be wearing a jacket over it anyway right?

adam, Thursday, 7 January 2016 02:40 (ten years ago)

if you are in a position to be needing tailored shirts in a non-jacket situation i assume you are a fancy architect or lighting consultant and can thus afford something that fits

http://dieworkwear.com/post/136758868414/the-early-days-of-armani

was gonna suggest a third way for now between trad and matrix but here's this guy doing it instead. (his warm minimalism take re normcore last year was p sharp too imo). think i'll always love this shit, it speaks to my childhood or something. wore a vint oversize bb shawl cardie in this style at work this week as it happens - good time for second hand as matt says (but then it always is)

think it's worth underlining that trad and prep are not necc the same, prep was happy to mess with silhouette too, sack suits etc, and imo its sort of self-amused dandyism can actually transition quite well into a non-chintzy 70s enigmatic haute boho to go with the modern drapey minimal. sombre dialled down to melancholy

maybe I need to rethink my style

me irl

obv yeah some of those pics might be considered extreme wrt oversizing but like caek says anything that avoids the super tired played out slim fit is gesture enough

r|t|c, Thursday, 7 January 2016 11:08 (ten years ago)

xp a power daddy, you say?

I mean I prob won't be wearing jackets, just like slacks and something w/ buttons and shoes that aren't sneakers

those armani pics are p high fashion - or at least would be today - not quite the same as shopping where my dad shops or whatever.

there are a lot of minimalist fashion brands that aren't doing mad oversized or particularly ostentatious stuff - just nicely cut but doesn't make me look like i work for kpmg and should be accessorising with a multi-stripe scarf and square-toed loafers.

A lot of that Armani stuff also reminds me of how my aunt's rich, narcissistic ex-husband dressed. He didn't like kids and was a bit of a dick to me.

i am getting ezra koenig vibes from that pic i posted tbh

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:43 (ten years ago)

boxy cut + wide peak lapels is so strange to me to think that there was a time that it was au courant and stylish and not excruciatingly naff and dated

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:57 (ten years ago)

I can definitely see lapels getting wider now, but the whole oversized thing seems like it's strictly 4 profiling n posing.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 7 January 2016 15:59 (ten years ago)

there are a lot of really big baggy pants around now - would never wear personally but i don't have the frame for it...

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 7 January 2016 16:04 (ten years ago)

i have been wearing a few oversize tops, mostly sweaters and sweatshirts lately, though less "stylish" and more i just feel like swimming in some big sweatshirts in the wintertime

yes if only kpmg execs had the humble good taste to spend hundreds on "secret style" pieces at our legacy

r|t|c, Thursday, 7 January 2016 16:23 (ten years ago)

those vintage armani pics remind me of the time my wife and i tried to watch the pilot episode of thirtysomething.

i can't really get w/that look at all, the lemaire collection linked in that piece is kind of cool tho.

goes hand in hand really, a big oversize sweater with swanky pants is both comfortable and fun to look at

surm, Thursday, 7 January 2016 16:48 (ten years ago)

I find some big sweaters/coats can look good if you wear them with more tailored-fitting pants. I think it's baggy everything that I really don't like.

kinda unnecessary ad hominem there but apologies if it seemed like i was attacking you. our legacy isn't partic expensive really anyway fwiw.

The uniqlo shirt I bought yesterday was a large. I usually get medium. Don't know if that's relevant to this important trend.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 7 January 2016 17:04 (ten years ago)

oh yeah baggy everything is a real stretch no pun intended that has to be like mega designer i feel

honestly idk if there has been weird sizing things happening but i am 5'7" 120 lbs very very skinny but if i want a regular-fitting (i.e. not super form-fitting or small) size t-shirt i have to buy medium, sometimes even large depending on the shirt. i do tend to wear tees slightly more loosely but still size S tees really feel too small for me and i am by any measure a fairly small dude

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:31 (ten years ago)

like i don't even know who is buying size XS

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:37 (ten years ago)

button-down shirts though i still buy S

marcos, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:38 (ten years ago)

tbh there are some outfits where like i can only wear an XS button down but i only own like 1 so i only wear those outfits like 3 times a year

surm, Thursday, 7 January 2016 18:38 (ten years ago)

my boyf buys XS from Uniqlo and H&M and he's like 5'5" and prob 130 or so, v tiny, and they are quite form fitting

Stevie I can totally see you rocking Epaulet!

Pricey, tho.

Oh hell yeah Epaulet is nice as fuck. Used to occasionally pop in their store but never bought anything.

tomorrow i am going to get really dressed up and be super like clean cut

surm, Friday, 8 January 2016 01:38 (ten years ago)

buttons on my ($$$$$$$) epaulet oxford broke in like a month, pants split in the crotch within 2 months, buyer beware imo

adam, Friday, 8 January 2016 12:52 (ten years ago)

daaaaaang that sucks. Spouse has a few pairs of pants and they have all worn fine. For shirts he likes Hugh and Crye and stocks up when they have a sale at their kinda-b&m store in town.

been looking at those old armani shots a lot, wow.

the reluctance of joe public aka me to obey the laws of fashion and circle away from the fitted, minimal style and revert to pleats, wide lapels, big shoulders etc. seems fairly understandable tho: the former is a lot easier to pull off than the latter.

also without the disposable income to blow on a number of super nice new pieces would be hard to transition from one to the other, like if you go to j crew and buy some pleated pants to go into your rotation youre just going to look like a dork with some pleated pants when you were them rather than someone who is au courant with the latest trends

Cuombas (jim in glasgow), Friday, 8 January 2016 22:45 (ten years ago)

PSA: Sid Mashburn on sale. Only happens twice a year. Beautifully made stuff.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Friday, 8 January 2016 22:46 (ten years ago)

Wow, had never seen that before but damn,v nice stuff. There's a grey and blue plaid suit that looks
like the suit of my dreams, but it's still 1000 on sale.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 8 January 2016 23:32 (ten years ago)

I bought a couple of Ann Mashburn dresses back in my corporate whoring days. Now that I'm on a social worker salary, my plan is to just buy one dress during each of the sales (in January and August, the only time anything is discounted) and that will be more or less my wardrobe purchases for the year. Once I learned how to sew I really started to appreciate the quality--Hong Kong and French seams, blind-stitched hems, etc. Takes a ton of extra time (and fabric), but the result is not just lovely but also wears like iron.

Protip: sale is 25% this week, but will be 30% next week and 40% (and sometimes more) the next. Stuff sells out quickly, though.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 9 January 2016 02:27 (ten years ago)

yeah, sm has beautiful-looking stuff. wish i could try it on. also love that the sale section is organized by color like any good thrift store.

After having my most recent J. Crew sale sweater get stretched from a single use (I pushed up the sleeves and when I pushed them back down they had already lost their tightness), I want to start stepping up my sweater game a little. What's the best place to get sweaters of similar style to your basic J. Crew wool crewnecks and v-necks but of considerably higher quality and durabiltiy, and can I do that with a $100 ceiling?

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Sunday, 10 January 2016 03:16 (ten years ago)

hmm...my first thought would be to look at ledbury sale or howard yount sale. don't have experience with either brand's sweaters but the price should be in range and they should be a step up from j crew.
