i would worry about checking a leather bag, and they're kind of heavy

Having snazzy luggage is just a higher level of style game than I am ready to reach right now.

haha those halcyon daze when i was fully employed

tbh not having to wear formal work clothes has left my style kinda lackluster. i have some very good suits and dress shoes that i dont feel comfortable wearing anymore or really anywhere to wear them and even my more casual clothes are a little more preppy and crisp than i feel like wearing atm. but im too old and established in my tastes to fully jump into some fit like im going to the rave in the matrix jawnz or underemployed graphic designer ca. 1997 shit which seems to be whats most legit rn

-san (Lamp), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 17:12 (ten years ago)

I ~may~ be moving to a diff dept at work where everyone dresses business-casual (rn I can wear whatever tf I want, jeans, t-shirts, hoodies, etc) and am kind of excited abt all of the exciting things the future might bring!

I spend a lot of time seeking out good button-down shirts bc they're so much of what I wear to work. So far this is my experience (all only worth sale prices unless otherwise noted):

Ledbury: Classic fit is not too big but has weirdly baggy arms. Slim is just a hair tight on me but not ridiculous, in spite of my being 5'9" and 180lbs. Materials are mostly nice but one I bought had a weird shine to it that was not clear from the web pics. Expensive, even on sale.
J. Crew: I am a huge stan of their Thomas Mason shirts -- they used to more often have a few on sale, but I haven't seen any in a while and they're pricey at full price. The "secret wash" shirts are good casual button-downs for the price (usually on sale and cheap). The regular Ludlow dress shirts are often not quite up to snuff, plus it's weird to buy a dress shirt that's not fitted (collar & sleeve size rather than S/M/L).
Brooks Bros: Always high quality, predictably a little stuffy, e.g. the collar styles often look a little outdated to me. But can't go wrong, and their non-irons are very reliable and sturdy.
Steven Alan: quality has been disappointing, all three of my SA shirts lost buttons very early on, and two have material that wrinkles way too easily
Banana Republic: cuts are surprisingly decent, material seems a little cheap but not a bad option for non-irons
Frank & Oak: I only have one, it's pretty good for the price.

Haven't tried uniqlo but a co-worker swore by them

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 17:42 (ten years ago)

haha a friend of mine that i hadnt seen in months showed up to my xmas party in like boxy stone-washed levis and a quilted bomber jacket made of a material that might have first been discovered in a gollancz paperback. there were more zippers than raised eyebrows. tbh i thought it was really cool that he had just decided to dress completely differently from like seven months ago.

the underemployed graphic designer ca 1997 look is sort of what he was doing - square silhouettes and shoulders, boxy cuts. stonewashed denim and lots of earth tones and neutrals. blocky, ugly prints often using text. wire-rimmed glasses with circular lenses. leather sneakers with very low profiles, also in earth tones and neutrals. layers.

2015 was the year i started wearing three-piece suits

gr8080, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 18:51 (ten years ago)

might try out 4-piece suits this year, you never know

gr8080, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 18:52 (ten years ago)

I want all of my shirts to be in like fun colors and patterns and fit v well, maybe a lil slim and youthful, but not like obnoxiously on-trend or silly. All the Brooks Bros I've ever seen looks really billowy and embarrassingly dated and yeah the collars are wack. Have they shaped up??

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 19:22 (ten years ago)

i bought a shirt in uniqlo today

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:17 (ten years ago)

brooks bros has an "extra trim" fit that is more like most fashionable slim fits, but the shoulders/armholes don't work for me. Actually now I think they have four fits and the slimmest is called the Milano or something. They also have lines that are supposed to be trendier like Black Fleece, but it's pricy. Haven't tried, but the quality should at least be good. Some of the sale prices aren't so bad:
http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Shirts/1592,default,sc.html?lid=leftnav-menu (look, they even have a "fun shirt"!)

omg if I'm going to spend $195 on a shirt it's going to be some zany Comme des Garcons statement piece

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 22:09 (ten years ago)

Yeah I mean that stuff is not for me either, BB is just where I go to get reliable solid-color non-iron dress shirts that will look sharp and professional with a suit without much care.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 23:04 (ten years ago)

The Black Fleece stuff looks a little bit Princeton U. to me. I used to ride NJ Transit and switch to Amtrak at Trenton when I went home for breaks, and there were always a lot of Princeton kids there and some had this certain super-pressed style that marked them as Princeton kids to me, like somehow it looked conservative and trendy at the same time, but more than anything expensive. So I always think of that style as Princeton, like ultra-fussy prep style that only a dandy scion of a wealthy family would wear.

Bought a tweed jacket in the Mr Porter sale, more for the aspiration to stretch out and try some new looks more than anything else. Now I have a tweed jacket and am not really sure what to do with it. I could start dressing like my Dad I guess.

i bought my bb winter coat on ebay. i think it is my nicest item of clothing, and it feels very nice/expensive to me when i'm wearing it, but it's totally inconspicuous. it just looks like jcrew with an extravagant amount of fabric. i guess that's one thing where bb can be handy right now in 2015: if you don't want the 2005 mad men/2015 championship footballer slim fit, but you don't want to go oversized/fashion.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 23:49 (ten years ago)

yeah bb quality is high and i feel like they are out of the trend dialogue rn so they are a good go-to for second-hand deals. i have this very nice, substantial pair of wool pants i got for like 35 dollars that makes me feel like a power daddy at 4x my income bracket, i may have spoken of them before in this very thread actually, i swear they feel like ermine or something they're so soft.

big Mahats (mattresslessness), Thursday, 7 January 2016 00:35 (ten years ago)

i like bb shirts and imo it doesnt matter if the fit is a little CFO-ish b/c you will will be wearing a jacket over it anyway right?

adam, Thursday, 7 January 2016 02:40 (ten years ago)

if you are in a position to be needing tailored shirts in a non-jacket situation i assume you are a fancy architect or lighting consultant and can thus afford something that fits

adam, Thursday, 7 January 2016 02:43 (ten years ago)

http://dieworkwear.com/post/136758868414/the-early-days-of-armani

was gonna suggest a third way for now between trad and matrix but here's this guy doing it instead. (his warm minimalism take re normcore last year was p sharp too imo). think i'll always love this shit, it speaks to my childhood or something. wore a vint oversize bb shawl cardie in this style at work this week as it happens - good time for second hand as matt says (but then it always is)

think it's worth underlining that trad and prep are not necc the same, prep was happy to mess with silhouette too, sack suits etc, and imo its sort of self-amused dandyism can actually transition quite well into a non-chintzy 70s enigmatic haute boho to go with the modern drapey minimal. sombre dialled down to melancholy

me irl

obv yeah some of those pics might be considered extreme wrt oversizing but like caek says anything that avoids the super tired played out slim fit is gesture enough

r|t|c, Thursday, 7 January 2016 11:08 (ten years ago)

xp a power daddy, you say?

I mean I prob won't be wearing jackets, just like slacks and something w/ buttons and shoes that aren't sneakers

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 January 2016 14:52 (ten years ago)

those armani pics are p high fashion - or at least would be today - not quite the same as shopping where my dad shops or whatever.

there are a lot of minimalist fashion brands that aren't doing mad oversized or particularly ostentatious stuff - just nicely cut but doesn't make me look like i work for kpmg and should be accessorising with a multi-stripe scarf and square-toed loafers.
