I'd find myself eating lunch among smartly dressed artists and trusties and half the Ford modeling agency roster, that sukked.

fashion micro aggressions

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

The first time I went with H (then just my gf) to a "nice" restaurant in NYC I suddenly felt very self-conscious and ashamed about my clothes. It was when I first realized there's jeans and there's jeans.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

heh - i visit ny like once a year lately, or prob twice a year next year - and each time i go back i'm like "ready for them this time"

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

sad as that sounds...

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

i definitely felt shamed this weekend lol

lmao i was thinking this too

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)

"this won't be like last time, fuck those clothes i'm wiser this time" ---> this did not turn out to be true for me

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

what's weird is i think this makes your style almost invisible in other cities - like in london close friends or whatever who like fashion might give a compliment about whatever, but workmates or whoever are like talking about your colleague in tweed jacket and brogues like "oh he's so fashionable" and you're like : / no

xpost i feel i'm getting closer sometimes but even the way you see some people's sense of fit is just unattainable. fashion is p silly like this but mostly it is fun/positive.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:06 (ten years ago)

(i mean i like tweed/brogues but i worked with one guy in my last job who dressed and styled himself like that british dude in season two of twin peaks, and my colleagues were all like "wow he makes such an effort")

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:07 (ten years ago)

ha yeah the best fashion being invisible to those who dont care is kinda a funny phenomena

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:11 (ten years ago)

haha yeah tru

always impressed by ppls failure to know what is cool or looks good

LEGIT (Lamp), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:14 (ten years ago)

feel like if u dont really care u just register fashion as something thats eye catching kinda like how ppl will just pick out the brightest sounding speakers or overly saturated photography

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:16 (ten years ago)

fashion in boston is such a nightmare, omg

call all destroyer, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:17 (ten years ago)

haha yeah when I go to NYC I actually feel I do ok but that's because I've spent the two weeks before my visit planning what to wear

a cruet of destiny (seandalai), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:19 (ten years ago)

I just ordered my first Ledbury shirts so I feel like a real fucking midtown douche now. Bought sale shirts with an additional discount, if the quality is as good as is rumored they came to a reasonable price of about $70 each.

i just got a nice soft twill plaid shirt from lb only to discover that they're moving to plastic buttons on some (i'm guessing casual) shirts. i own like a dozen of their shirts and am really disproportionately irritated about this, they sure as hell aren't getting cheaper.

90s revival

― lag∞n, Thursday, December 10, 2015 4:47 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

yea! i know there has been talk about this for a little while now but yea it is really apparent. tons of oversize shit, some flannel, army gear, rips and frays. though the baggy pants of the 90s are definitely not back, tops may be oversize but they are almost always paired w/ skinny pants. also those really drastic tapers on like everything including and especially sweatpants, i saw a bunch of jeans with like a crinkly elastic cuff at the bottom in a weird light stonewash color

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 14:45 (ten years ago)

and yes it really does seem like the "urban lumberjack" thing is dying

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 14:45 (ten years ago)

i've defo seen baggy pants around the place, though more in a kind of higher fashion way. personally, baggy pants just look really weird on me, i'm glad for tapers and skinny fits.

btw i recommend these kinda sweatpants a lot: http://www.cosstores.com/gb/Men/Trousers/Wool_cashmere_trousers/46905-17475786.1#c-85342

considering buying a second pair in navy after i got the grey pair, really good winter go-to.

there are still remnants of "urban woodsman" and certain things that persist (eg "artisan" and rustic aesthetics still seem very very popular in restaurants and cafes, though "artisan" has definitely peaked now that like panera offers "artisan" bread it is now essentially meaningless much like "fresh" is wrt food) but i feel like people who look like this are way less common than say 3-5 or even like 1-2 years ago

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 14:50 (ten years ago)

those trousers are very cool xp

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 14:50 (ten years ago)

yea i feel like i finally started dressing in an acceptable way once i found pants that fit me well, like surprise my whole game kind of changed, so to go back to baggy pants just seems kind of unthinkable for me right now

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 14:53 (ten years ago)

I really loved that Take Ivy article, thanks for that

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

I just have one question about the jeans on second from right...

WHAT ARE THOSE???!!!!

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 December 2015 17:07 (ten years ago)

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:08 (ten years ago)

why u want a pair xp? read the 2010 nymag article the pic came from there is a whole "rusticity buying guide" or some shit

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:09 (ten years ago)

i have those cos pants localgarda posted can confirm theyre p good. also data points: at a party last night and saw some v style fwd dudes in stone-washed baggy levis.

LEGIT (Lamp), Friday, 11 December 2015 17:10 (ten years ago)

i bought a pair of han kjobenhavn jeans a while back and they looked like tapered/slim on the site but when they arrived they were p close to a 90s stonewash baggy, imo. i've worn them once or twice but can't quite let myself enjoy them. prob going to sell them on ebay.

I have a great pair of loose fitting our legacy stonewashed jeans that my wife will probably destroy one day while im out

Karl Rove Knausgård (jim in glasgow), Friday, 11 December 2015 17:13 (ten years ago)

stonewash definitely seems prevalent now

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

Sometimes I'm tempted to buy a pair of Kirkland Signature 5-Pocket Jeans and just get a lot of tailoring done on them. I kind of dig the color/wash, and they are absurdly cheap:

(non-huge sizes are usually available at the warehouse)

i am tempted to fuck w/ some higher level jeans but i'm pretty content w/ the levis i have and none of them were very expensive

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

i like the tapered profile because it fits my huge ass and thighs good

lag∞n, Friday, 11 December 2015 17:45 (ten years ago)

Damnit the J Crew coat I wanted was down to $200 yesterday and I didn't pull the trigger because I had just bought shirts. Now it's completely sold out. @#$*@#%(*^(%^!!!

hate when that happens

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 22:11 (ten years ago)

what was the coat

marcos, Friday, 11 December 2015 22:11 (ten years ago)

The Ludlow Wool-Cashmere topcoat in charcoal. It had been hovering between $300-350 for a while in their various "sales." (Retail was $450 but it was rarely at that price).

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Friday, 11 December 2015 22:18 (ten years ago)

Hmm, they have the one with thinsulate for 270 in my size. I thought I read a review that said that the thinsulate interfered with the styling a little. OTOH, warmer.

yeah i mostly wear topman jeans just cos of they fit well. cos (same site as those cuffed pants above) jeans are good too. i have a pair of acne studios that were expensive, they are more comfortable and less sweaty - not selvedge - but i've prob said before here how most slim fit jeans are like clown pants on me.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Saturday, 12 December 2015 01:20 (ten years ago)

i love levis but yesterday i almost paid £90 for a pair of 510s and at the last second i was like wait, what am i doing, i can get the same cut in the united states for $30

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 12 December 2015 09:09 (ten years ago)

(i think the quality of the fabric in better in europe? but in my dad years, when the knees wear out after 12 months, it is crazy to "invest" in jeans imo)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 12 December 2015 11:06 (ten years ago)

Anyone tried J Crew Crosby stuff vs Ludlow? They seem to have the Crosby ("athletic build") version of the same coat for cheaper and without the thinsulate that supposedly makes it hang less nicely. I was actually going to get a size up in the Ludlow coat based on what I tried on in the store, so maybe just the Crosby at my size would work.
