I like all of these ideas, thanks.

all the brands you cite do formal wear, shirts etc - then go somewhere else and buy one really nice tie, dunno, one good tie will go a long way.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:42 (ten years ago)

the norse shirts imo are really well cut and p well priced.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)

or just uniqlo for shirts, if it's a one or two wear scenario. okay that's my info dump done... :)

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)

BTW for standard dress shirts, the Nordstrom brands are all very good for the price (Calibrate, Nordstrom and the premium "John W. Nordstrom" line).

get some dressy garments then leave them in yr closet until they go out of style, repeat, eventually die

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:48 (ten years ago)

lol otm

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:48 (ten years ago)

so many occasions for which i had to buy something dressy, wore it once, now it is ill-fitting and out of style

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:49 (ten years ago)

haha. never even bother buying a suit for this reason. blazer is the only vague thing you might bother wearing.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:58 (ten years ago)

jim do you live in toronto?

LEGIT (Lamp), Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:59 (ten years ago)

Karl Rove Knausgård (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:03 (ten years ago)

Yeah I probably have to wear a suit minimum 1x per month for work so my suiting needs are a little different. I even keep one at my office now for emergencies. I have a total of five wearable suits -- a solid navy brooks brothers where the jacket is a little too long because I should have gotten a short (I blame the sales guy), a charcoal with light stripes and a blue with very faint plaid Peter Millar suits, a boss "micro houndstooth" suit that's good for more casual/wearing without a tie, and a Jos A Bank sharkskin suit that I had to buy for a wedding and don't have many other occasions for (except maybe wearing to someone else's summer wedding).

I just ordered my first Ledbury shirts so I feel like a real fucking midtown douche now. Bought sale shirts with an additional discount, if the quality is as good as is rumored they came to a reasonable price of about $70 each.

btw i went to NYC last weekend, i had not been there in years, half a decade maybe? seems very ridiculous to say obviously NYC is like a global fashion and art center but i was still pretty blown away, people dress on another level there. i live in boston, obv a major city, there are fashionable people here too but it just seems very different, most of the young people in boston are here bc of some relationship to a higher ed institution and that kind of collegiate casual dress predominates, i was surprised by how different the vibe was in nyc

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:21 (ten years ago)

sexy ppl and delivery food are the only good reasons to live in ny

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:24 (ten years ago)

the job markets actually p good rn

also access to stuff kindof, mostly

LEGIT (Lamp), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:25 (ten years ago)

he said defensively

LEGIT (Lamp), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:26 (ten years ago)

i mean also there is such a wider mix of fashion on display due to the crazy mix of people in nyc, like even in super wealthy manhattan all kinds of people come over there to do shit so there are all different kinds of fashion being worn, you see all kinds of styles next to each other. boston is super segregated so if i am walking around cambridge it is mostly student or tech dude fashion, i drive through dorchester and it is more urban wear, there is some mixing happening but not really to the same extent at all

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:26 (ten years ago)

if u accidentally become sexy in boston u r required by law to move to ny within 6 months

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:28 (ten years ago)

when you see ny street style it seems to be leading everywhere for sure.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)

when there it's a bit more random, but some really fashion parts of manhattan, i mean as a tourist i dunno but like crosby street and around there seems like one of the most fashion places i've ever been in.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:36 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I have to admit I think the only reason I even post regularly ITT is that living in NYC rubbed off on me, like I just started to get super fascinated seeing the way people dress every day on the subway, walking around midtown, whatever -- it used to be the more daring stuff I'd see in Downtown BK and Williamsburg when I lived in those areas, but even around the offices and midtown consulates and stuff you see so many people whose dress at a ridiculously high level, including people from all over the world wearing stuff you don't necessarily find easily here. I almost stopped a dude today just to ask him what his shoes were, and I heard him speaking Spanish. Middle-aged guy, subtly and tastefully dressed, shoes were simple and reddish-brown leather but very rich color and perfect shape. Even on the Queens subway line I ride you see interesting stuff all the time even though it's not the norm. Chinese dudes from Flushing dressed impeccably sharp, occasional normcore hipsters in Jackson Heights and Astoria, and then Long Island City is always where the flood of beautiful people gets on/off.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)

I appreciate it a lot, it adds so much visual interest to my day. I guess in nature you look at the trees, birds, mountains, streams etc. In a lot of NYC you have drab grey and glass buildings, but you can look at the people.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:40 (ten years ago)

there are very sexy ppl there for sure

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)

if you go shopping in the higher end stores around soho (in ny) it's p funny how fashionable but also helpful all the staff are - like london is a big city but there's nothing of the same level of confidence or comfort.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)

everyone shd move to ny for 3 years just to get shamed into dressing better

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)

the thing i love abt ny style is its actually v funki and dank like theres some idea that the height of fashion is sleek and perfected but thats not it at all

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

its kinda ugly and weird and confrontational

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

I used to be one of those "I don't care about clothes" guys.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

also way more color on display than i remember, one time i was there in like maybe winter 2008 i had this shitty green puffer jacket on from old navy and i looked around the subway train i was on and later the bar i was in and i'm like "i am the only person not wearing black in this fucking city". i saw way more color, lots of brown and camel overcoats, various grays, and lol those oversized military fishtail parkas are as ubiquitous there as they are in boston so lots of olive green

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

(referring to coats really when i say there was more color now than i remember in 08)

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)

i know most of my reps for four pins here are kinda frowned on but this photographer's ny street style is really cool imo: https://twitter.com/georgedelder

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)

Yeah it definitely seems like a lot of years NYC goes overly black/grey in the winter. Wonder if the unseasonably warm weather is the reason it's different.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:49 (ten years ago)

its funny how much regularly seeing ppl who are really crisp just shames me. all summer in to i was getting away with the laziest shit

ya there some nice shots there feel like most "street style photgraphy" is so not street just like overly made up try hards in expensive clothes

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:51 (ten years ago)

there shd be a street style blog thats just like this persons pants look good on them

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

I moved to NYC in '97 and took a shitty office job in SoHo. My only cool-ish clothes were streetwear but I was expected to dress biz casual and all I had for that was Gap khakis and like BD Baggies button downs. I'd find myself eating lunch among smartly dressed artists and trusties and half the Ford modeling agency roster, that sukked.

rip van wanko, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

yeah he actually snaps people who are like iconically dressed in some way, some of whom may be on trend, others just like i dunno, a kind of ny take on a punk or something.

but still no other city has such casual style imo - and the streets and steps and doorways and stuff kinda tie into that. london has its moments but it doesn't have areas that just reek of concentrated fashion in the way that ny does.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

Yeah I mean there's a risk of sliding into rockism with this sort of thing, but "street style" ought to be like ordinary folks who just have good style, not like a model who you just happened to see on the street.

last time i was in nyc i had a tea in the saturday surf store - and like the clothes are p basic but i guess nice - it felt like some epicentre of fashion though, everyone knew each other, really funny place to watch people.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:55 (ten years ago)

alot of his blog is 'here are some pix of my friends who are models' but tbrr i like looking at pix of his model friends so

lol xp

fashion micro aggressions

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

The first time I went with H (then just my gf) to a "nice" restaurant in NYC I suddenly felt very self-conscious and ashamed about my clothes. It was when I first realized there's jeans and there's jeans.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

heh - i visit ny like once a year lately, or prob twice a year next year - and each time i go back i'm like "ready for them this time"

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

sad as that sounds...

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:01 (ten years ago)

lmao i was thinking this too

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)

"this won't be like last time, fuck those clothes i'm wiser this time" ---> this did not turn out to be true for me

marcos, Thursday, 10 December 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

what's weird is i think this makes your style almost invisible in other cities - like in london close friends or whatever who like fashion might give a compliment about whatever, but workmates or whoever are like talking about your colleague in tweed jacket and brogues like "oh he's so fashionable" and you're like : / no

xpost i feel i'm getting closer sometimes but even the way you see some people's sense of fit is just unattainable. fashion is p silly like this but mostly it is fun/positive.
