i am a motherfucker with some dark secrets one of which is that im back in town

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)

Polishing shoes is a complete waste of my time. I can pay someone $4 to do it for me and they do a much better job and I have nothing to clean up.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:23 (ten years ago)

some cobblers will add a little grippy film to the bottom of your slippy sole shoes, i got that done in france a couple of years ago when i got new shoes and felt like a fucking film star or something

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:23 (ten years ago)

xp My shoe repair guy told me that a lot of shoe shine stands won't properly clean your shoes before they polish and that this results in a buildup that's bad for the leather.

cleaning and polishing shoes takes less than 10 minutes and is a truly useful skill, if not from the "now your shoes look shiny and clean" standpoint than definitely from a "make sure any shoes you sunk some money into last for years" standpoint.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)

I buy cheap shoes and wear them for like 10 years. Can't wait until shoe shiners are replaced by robots, tbh though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:47 (ten years ago)

Team Rockport.

Jeff, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:47 (ten years ago)

you should definitely wash your shoes with saddle soap to strip off the old polish before re-polishing imho

gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 15:55 (ten years ago)

i'm not an expert shoe steward by any means but wax polish doesn't actually condition the leather, it just seals out moisture. washing with saddle soap will clean off the excess and will keep the fibers in the leather lubricated. when the leather dries out completely it's far more prone to creasing and wearing out.

also: shoe trees are good

i don't have the occasion to wear or the patience to care for nice shoes, i basically wear bean boots or vans 100% of the time

gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 16:04 (ten years ago)

i am horrible capitalist so i outsource my shoe-polishing but shoe trees are a good investment ime

also ty to caek/lagoon for that fantastic picture of kelsey grammar on his way to see the wizard

LEGIT (Lamp), Tuesday, 17 November 2015 16:54 (ten years ago)

it is truly peak #menswear

anybody seen anything cool recently fitting this description:

sweaters/sweatshirts that are plain but have some visual/textural interest and can be worn on their own without layers?

basically for days when i need to leave the house and look decent but don't want to iron a shirt.

call all destroyer, Monday, 23 November 2015 02:09 (ten years ago)

u wear sweaters without a layer under them?

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 23 November 2015 03:33 (ten years ago)

well i always wear a t-shirt but i have a couple patterned/graphic sweaters that i don't wear like a collared shirt under

call all destroyer, Monday, 23 November 2015 03:43 (ten years ago)

yes, winter (not christmas) tops, jumpers and sweaters - talk to me.

Really, I'm just looking for things that are warm, classic but not too big and bulky and I can layer-up, and also which won't shrink or become misshapen by February. I guess material is key here.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Monday, 23 November 2015 12:43 (ten years ago)

i only really wear shirts with a blazer these days - or on their own when it's warm enough to do so, most knitwear/sweaters are just complicated by a shirt underneath, even if it can sometimes look well.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 23 November 2015 12:59 (ten years ago)

but i don't wear much really thin knitwear - if i did maybe i'd shirt more

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Monday, 23 November 2015 12:59 (ten years ago)

uniqlo lambswool sweaters have some texture for cheap

i got my shetland sweater from oconnells last year. fits well. no stretch or shrink so far and minimal pilling (via $$$). it's great.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 23 November 2015 13:30 (ten years ago)

i got this ted baker sweater a few weeks back and it makes me hate all my other sweaters m/l

gr8080, Monday, 23 November 2015 15:51 (ten years ago)

ooh nice. I have for some reason avoided Ted Baker stuff in the past (slightly cheesy for-da-club dress shirts?) but that is a great sweater.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 23 November 2015 15:53 (ten years ago)

it is merino wool and comfy as heck

gr8080, Monday, 23 November 2015 15:59 (ten years ago)

nice sweat for sure

lag∞n, Monday, 23 November 2015 19:37 (ten years ago)

i've taken to keeping all my jumpers in large ikea freezer bags now. tbf to the moths they've actually done me a solid by only munching my least faves this year

r|t|c, Monday, 23 November 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)

i need to wash my medium gray sweater 😮

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 23 November 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)

what are you all wearing lately. i got a pair of charcoal bb wool dress pants on ebay for 30 dollars. love them. so soft, my first wool pants. also um the pockets are round, not angled, which is cool.

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 25 November 2015 22:58 (ten years ago)

lots of knitwear. my knitwear game is serious this year.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 25 November 2015 23:06 (ten years ago)

i am definitely looking to up my knit game this yr too. recently got this which i am v happy with
https://ca.frankandoak.com/product/31571

Got these pants too and I like the matchup, although they slightly run into the problem I have with pants from most places which is "you can see my socks because I am a long-legged individual" but it's not TOO bad and I hope when I wash them that doesn't get exacerbated
https://ca.frankandoak.com/product/31954

Wanna see if I can find more thick sweaters like that one, also ideally w/ crew necks... i find bigger necks tend to overwhelm me a bit, i'm 6'2" with a 34ish+ waist and I tend to look more ogre-like with bigger collars.

also my shoe game is garbage but I probably won't fix that anytime soon because it's canadian wintertime.

where can i get these j crew discouts

, Friday, 27 November 2015 16:30 (ten years ago)

that link isn't working but this has been a disastrous year for almost every midrange mall/chain clothing retailer (delias, american eagle, bebe, pacsun etc)

yes wave (rip van wanko), Friday, 27 November 2015 16:54 (ten years ago)

oh no not bebe

cory artangel (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 27 November 2015 16:55 (ten years ago)

Yeah what took bebe so long? American Apparel trading @ $0.032 on the pink sheets

yes wave (rip van wanko), Friday, 27 November 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)

add the final hyphen for the link to work

call all destroyer, Friday, 27 November 2015 16:58 (ten years ago)

in the uk j crew is just converted straight from dollars to £ - you could buy a lot of far nicer stuff for the same price.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Friday, 27 November 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

i went to a wedding on the bebe estate once, p nice

lag∞n, Friday, 27 November 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

i really want this bag

J Crew "discounts" look like the exact same discounts they've had p much every day (but "today only") for the past 2-3 years. Still looking forward to post-Christmas when I can hopefully get the topcoat I've been eyeing for under $300.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Monday, 30 November 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

umm that bag is amazing xp
