mmmmwah

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 21:04 (ten years ago)

You look great there surm. I should probably step up my style - i had a good thing going with the rumpled untucked oxford shirts, jeans, desert boots and glasses, but it's more of a student look than a professional one. An issue I have is that none of my oxfords button all the way up comfortably - they are all size small, so like 14-14 1/2 inches and my neck is a solid 15 inches. Sizing up to medium is ok, but then i can't wear them untucked without them looking weird... but maybe my days of not tucking are behind me.

I've been commuting through penn station these past few days and the "professional" attire on the nj transit is deeply depressing. Lots of suits without jackets, shirts slightly too big and pants too low. I really envy women who have more freedom in what they wear in professional settings. It would be cool to play with fit and mismatch pieced and stuff... Tucking in a shirt into slacks and wearing a tie just seems so homogenous to me

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

I think i could work with jcrew slim fit shirts size medium in gingham and other patterns matched with knit or skinny silk ties, slim chinos, and dark or tweed blazers though. Maybe i could wear a tie bar. Or quit teaching and go back to the barista life

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:32 (ten years ago)

oh god train fashion is deeply fascinating to me, esp nj tran

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

there needs to be a series -- an exhibit

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

I'm on the nj transit now. Lots of broken looking people coming home from Manhattan office jobs, trying to sneakily look at porn on their smartphones

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:37 (ten years ago)

the men in light khakis and like shiny black shoes

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:38 (ten years ago)

With square toes

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:39 (ten years ago)

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:40 (ten years ago)

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:40 (ten years ago)

Not in my field of vision but they're totally around

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:43 (ten years ago)

right.

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:46 (ten years ago)

they're typically the last to get off the train, i find.

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:46 (ten years ago)

Yeah these folks live deep in Jerz like me (until Saturday)

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:51 (ten years ago)

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:55 (ten years ago)

also to speak to your earlier point i was wearing an untucked button down to work today with lightweight pants and people looked at me like i was wearing a fucking monkey costume wtf

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:59 (ten years ago)

my personal uniform for teaching undergraduates: lime green court force his with grey athletic socks, jorts (stone-washed, cuffed at the knee) and anime t-shrits. personal preference was for girls und panzer.

dead (Lamp), Friday, 7 August 2015 00:17 (ten years ago)

omg i have no clothes and i haven't been wearing socks. i need to do laundry tomorrow or i'm going to die.

surm, Friday, 7 August 2015 14:42 (ten years ago)

same. i swear someone's been taking underwear and socks out my drawers.

9 days from now a.k.a next weekend. (dog latin), Friday, 7 August 2015 14:43 (ten years ago)

i always think about just buying a huge supply of socks and underwear because that is really the only thing that requires me to do laundry with any frequency, i don't like washing shirts or pants very often because they don't really get dirty.

marcos, Friday, 7 August 2015 14:58 (ten years ago)

huh.. i wouldn't wear a shirt more than once a day unless i was at a festival or travelling or something. i'm irrationally conscious of smelling bad, but also it feels funny wearing yesterday's clothes sometimes. maybe i ought to get over it and try it. might make things last a little longer.

9 days from now a.k.a next weekend. (dog latin), Friday, 7 August 2015 15:01 (ten years ago)

marcos, do it. I have more underwear than can go in one dresser drawer (and even more socks) and it cuts down my laundry tremendously. Sometimes I'll hand wash shirts or shorts to further delay laundry. And it's easier on the shirts.

Je55e, Friday, 7 August 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)

xp: lookin great Surm. Where is the suit from?

five six and (man alive), Friday, 7 August 2015 15:31 (ten years ago)

it's actually one of those made to order websites! i forget the name of it - it was a recommendation from a friend. you give them your exact dimensions and they send you a nice suit. and affordable. weird right?

surm, Saturday, 8 August 2015 20:25 (ten years ago)

oh NEVERMIND that's like a fancy suit. Odin I think.

surm, Saturday, 8 August 2015 20:35 (ten years ago)

surm, Saturday, 8 August 2015 20:36 (ten years ago)

johnny crunch, Sunday, 9 August 2015 19:35 (ten years ago)

now you find them in the aforementioned marshalls and they come with a belt

rip van wanko, Sunday, 9 August 2015 19:54 (ten years ago)

i love fucking marshalls i've gotten so many dope pieces from there. most recent is a teal swimsuit that fits me like a glove from the boys section for fucking 8.99

surm, Sunday, 9 August 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)

wore my long T at the weekend and no one laughed. worked well with this super-thin jacket thing that looks like a leather jacket but is actually more like a shirt.

9 days from now a.k.a next weekend. (dog latin), Monday, 10 August 2015 14:18 (ten years ago)

surm, Monday, 10 August 2015 14:23 (ten years ago)

My grandfather and his brother made suits in Brooklyn and Manhattan and I think even had a couple of small factories at one point. My dad knew suits pretty well and could sew and do simple hemming and stuff as a result.

five six and (man alive), Wednesday, 26 August 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)

I should really leverage this thin story into a brand.

five six and (man alive), Wednesday, 26 August 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)

surm, Wednesday, 26 August 2015 19:26 (ten years ago)

i haven't been paid since 1 july as i've changed how i invoice my employer - suffering withdrawal here. on the plus side when i do get paid it'll be justifiably winter and i can buy coats/boots etc.
