wait is this really what we have been debating? white tees underneath unbuttoned button downs? this is clearly always a classic look depending on context (admittedly context and choice of shirt is v key.) it's wayyyy My So Called Life. there is no argument here.

didn't buy though, i see a lot of UO shirts that i like on the rack but fuck the necks are just so tight on all their shirts, i couldn't breathe the button came up so high (not even the top button)

i had to size up to a large, because the medium fit very strangely across my exquisite bust, but can't argue with the price

might need to wear ties to my new job... no offense to people who like ties, but i hate them and when i wear them i feel like i am wearing a costume

what's weird is that this is a teaching job, so a suit would be totally inappropriate. i guess i am going to try to build a wardrobe around a sort of "ivy" look: oxford cloth shirts, knit ties, tweed blazers, slim chinos in khaki, gray, or navy, sweaters... i don't really like the sound of this at all but it's the best i can come up with. this year i got away with wearing a plaid shirt and dark jeans to teach which wasn't the most professional but i felt like myself at least. idk. anyone here required to wear a tie? did you learn to embrace it?

insisting that you wear a tie is a form of control and homogenization. they want you in a particular spot, and the tie rule prevents you from moving off that spot in one direction, so the option left to you is to move in the other direction. primarily this means a vest. a vest and a regular tie is enough but a vest and bowtie is the advanced level. and you should treat the vest an tie as an opportunity rather than a restraint. this is a chance to express yourself, show that formal dress is not going to stifle your fun side. if you like disney characters then let people know!

don't wear a fuckin' tie. i mean only wear it if you like it. i used to hate 'em but some of them are kind of cool. you can totally just wear a vest or some combination of any of things you mentioned upthread (although the blazer doesn't always have to be tweed.) it is not that hard to look presentable as a man. formal, even. the last time i wore a tie to a fancy gala at work was in 2006. it is our responsibility as men to push the uncomplicated agenda, and let the shirt speak for itself.

Treesh there was a little talk upthread about ties with no jacket vs jacket with no tie, do you think you could get away with wearing a jacket with no tie? You might feel more comfortable while still looking professional. (I know I would)

I should probably step up my style - i had a good thing going with the rumpled untucked oxford shirts, jeans, desert boots and glasses, but it's more of a student look than a professional one. An issue I have is that none of my oxfords button all the way up comfortably - they are all size small, so like 14-14 1/2 inches and my neck is a solid 15 inches. Sizing up to medium is ok, but then i can't wear them untucked without them looking weird... but maybe my days of not tucking are behind me.

I've been commuting through penn station these past few days and the "professional" attire on the nj transit is deeply depressing. Lots of suits without jackets, shirts slightly too big and pants too low. I really envy women who have more freedom in what they wear in professional settings. It would be cool to play with fit and mismatch pieced and stuff... Tucking in a shirt into slacks and wearing a tie just seems so homogenous to me

I think i could work with jcrew slim fit shirts size medium in gingham and other patterns matched with knit or skinny silk ties, slim chinos, and dark or tweed blazers though. Maybe i could wear a tie bar. Or quit teaching and go back to the barista life

my personal uniform for teaching undergraduates: lime green court force his with grey athletic socks, jorts (stone-washed, cuffed at the knee) and anime t-shrits. personal preference was for girls und panzer.

omg i have no clothes and i haven't been wearing socks. i need to do laundry tomorrow or i'm going to die.

same. i swear someone's been taking underwear and socks out my drawers.

i always think about just buying a huge supply of socks and underwear because that is really the only thing that requires me to do laundry with any frequency, i don't like washing shirts or pants very often because they don't really get dirty.

huh.. i wouldn't wear a shirt more than once a day unless i was at a festival or travelling or something. i'm irrationally conscious of smelling bad, but also it feels funny wearing yesterday's clothes sometimes. maybe i ought to get over it and try it. might make things last a little longer.

marcos, do it. I have more underwear than can go in one dresser drawer (and even more socks) and it cuts down my laundry tremendously. Sometimes I'll hand wash shirts or shorts to further delay laundry. And it's easier on the shirts.
