I still prefer a crew neck as an undershirt and most certainly dngaf.

Jeff, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)

crew neck on its own is way in of course, but i don't usually wear shirts under my button downs so i can't speak to that

surm, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)

I kind of like crew neck undershirts on other guys but it might be the same way I find it cute when guys hold their spoons with their fists or feeling affection for a shaky-legged colt.

marcos, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 20:55 (ten years ago)

yea i do not wear a crew under an oxford. if i do wear an undershirt it will not be visible at the collar

flannel or chamois is different i might wear a t-shirt underneath but def not a white one, i do not own any white crew necks

marcos, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 20:58 (ten years ago)

i can dig cool weather style it is fun to layer up for sure but man i just really love wearing shorts and a t-shirt, it is liberating and feels great, summer is just the best season imo

marcos, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 20:59 (ten years ago)

I've been thinking about dying a few white undershirts tan (maybe w/ tea?) so that they don't show under lighter shirts.

Je55e, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 21:01 (ten years ago)

caek we r on same page

trevor nelson seems to favour dark button-downs waaay unbuttoned with a white T underneath, pretty fresh imo

dyeing with tea is a key part of my ss look. for winter i think wool, silk and leather.

anyway just to reaffirm my commitment to advanced lifestyle branding options, i'm sewing most of my clothes now.

awesome

the only way I can see three undone buttons on a button down working is if you're already hot enough that it doesn't matter. However, since I live in Scotland I don't really need to consider such trifles. I had my hearing on last night.

i never wore undershirts crew or otherwise but or got the appeal but a few weeks ago i had to pass up a nice white linen button up perry ellis shirt for cheap cause u could see me nips through it :-/

flopson, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 22:06 (ten years ago)

would never wear them in a formal context but i really like a white tee under some casual shirts, especially denim shirts

undershirts block sweat/pit stains

that benefit outweighs the additional warmth they create, IMO

Je55e, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 22:11 (ten years ago)

so what do you do when you can see the nips

flopson, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 22:18 (ten years ago)

yeah i'm talking about three buttons undone in warm weather when you're drinking outside, not in durham in may.

wait is this really what we have been debating? white tees underneath unbuttoned button downs? this is clearly always a classic look depending on context (admittedly context and choice of shirt is v key.) it's wayyyy My So Called Life. there is no argument here.

pure ace

surm, Saturday, 1 August 2015 11:21 (ten years ago)

wearing that today tbh

surm, Saturday, 1 August 2015 11:37 (ten years ago)

no surm think we are going talking about that schlubby office park business casual when a tight-necked undershirt is obviously visible under an ill fitting button down, usually paired with dockers or something, not what u are talking about

marcos, Saturday, 1 August 2015 14:01 (ten years ago)

oh right that is bad

surm, Saturday, 1 August 2015 14:07 (ten years ago)

thank u for clarifying

surm, Saturday, 1 August 2015 14:07 (ten years ago)

also i ran out of white crew tees so instead i am wearing a black v neck tee but the v is v small

surm, Saturday, 1 August 2015 14:08 (ten years ago)

the cut is a bit fashion for me, but in case anyone else is looking for S/S linen shirts to get through the rest of the summer, UO has these for $15

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:22 (ten years ago)

lmao i tried that on earlier today

didn't buy though, i see a lot of UO shirts that i like on the rack but fuck the necks are just so tight on all their shirts, i couldn't breathe the button came up so high (not even the top button)

marcos, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:28 (ten years ago)

who cares about the neck look at that sleeve

would definitely make me look like my neighbor which is like, i leave that to my neighbor

surm, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

i had to size up to a large, because the medium fit very strangely across my exquisite bust, but can't argue with the price

might need to wear ties to my new job... no offense to people who like ties, but i hate them and when i wear them i feel like i am wearing a costume

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 04:24 (ten years ago)

what's weird is that this is a teaching job, so a suit would be totally inappropriate. i guess i am going to try to build a wardrobe around a sort of "ivy" look: oxford cloth shirts, knit ties, tweed blazers, slim chinos in khaki, gray, or navy, sweaters... i don't really like the sound of this at all but it's the best i can come up with. this year i got away with wearing a plaid shirt and dark jeans to teach which wasn't the most professional but i felt like myself at least. idk. anyone here required to wear a tie? did you learn to embrace it?

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 04:29 (ten years ago)

insisting that you wear a tie is a form of control and homogenization. they want you in a particular spot, and the tie rule prevents you from moving off that spot in one direction, so the option left to you is to move in the other direction. primarily this means a vest. a vest and a regular tie is enough but a vest and bowtie is the advanced level. and you should treat the vest an tie as an opportunity rather than a restraint. this is a chance to express yourself, show that formal dress is not going to stifle your fun side. if you like disney characters then let people know!

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 6 August 2015 12:32 (ten years ago)

treesh are there any ties you like? not wearing them but how they look?

call all destroyer, Thursday, 6 August 2015 12:45 (ten years ago)

don't wear a fuckin' tie. i mean only wear it if you like it. i used to hate 'em but some of them are kind of cool. you can totally just wear a vest or some combination of any of things you mentioned upthread (although the blazer doesn't always have to be tweed.) it is not that hard to look presentable as a man. formal, even. the last time i wore a tie to a fancy gala at work was in 2006. it is our responsibility as men to push the uncomplicated agenda, and let the shirt speak for itself.

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 13:12 (ten years ago)

Treesh there was a little talk upthread about ties with no jacket vs jacket with no tie, do you think you could get away with wearing a jacket with no tie? You might feel more comfortable while still looking professional. (I know I would)

marcos, Thursday, 6 August 2015 13:58 (ten years ago)

jacket and no tie has saved my life on more than one occasion. this is my latest shot for a work portfolio.

obv the suit pants can be subbed out for slacks

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 14:37 (ten years ago)

You look so handsome!

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 6 August 2015 20:56 (ten years ago)

mmmmwah

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 21:04 (ten years ago)

You look great there surm. I should probably step up my style - i had a good thing going with the rumpled untucked oxford shirts, jeans, desert boots and glasses, but it's more of a student look than a professional one. An issue I have is that none of my oxfords button all the way up comfortably - they are all size small, so like 14-14 1/2 inches and my neck is a solid 15 inches. Sizing up to medium is ok, but then i can't wear them untucked without them looking weird... but maybe my days of not tucking are behind me.

I've been commuting through penn station these past few days and the "professional" attire on the nj transit is deeply depressing. Lots of suits without jackets, shirts slightly too big and pants too low. I really envy women who have more freedom in what they wear in professional settings. It would be cool to play with fit and mismatch pieced and stuff... Tucking in a shirt into slacks and wearing a tie just seems so homogenous to me

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

I think i could work with jcrew slim fit shirts size medium in gingham and other patterns matched with knit or skinny silk ties, slim chinos, and dark or tweed blazers though. Maybe i could wear a tie bar. Or quit teaching and go back to the barista life

Treeship, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:32 (ten years ago)

oh god train fashion is deeply fascinating to me, esp nj tran

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

there needs to be a series -- an exhibit

surm, Thursday, 6 August 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

I'm on the nj transit now. Lots of broken looking people coming home from Manhattan office jobs, trying to sneakily look at porn on their smartphones
