the whole enterprise feels cheap

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:23 (ten years ago)

I would just go for linen shirts & pants, maybe a polo. just really basic stuff if uniqlo is out

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

so there: H&M - for if uniqlo is out

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

I work in marketing

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:25 (ten years ago)

it's another place where you have to dig. i have some great pieces from them (a couple of shirts, a blazer, a vest) - but there is a lot of crap.

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:45 (ten years ago)

caek try Aigle

transparent play for gifs (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 July 2015 18:09 (ten years ago)

feel like h&m has some reasonable stuff but yeah a lot of things that miss the mark for me and lots of fluff

uniqlo is like rows of obvious basics, and if you need that basic item, it will prob fit your needs

h&m stores are more cluttered compared to uniqlo, and there is questionable art & furnishings, and they play loud obnoxious music

the H&M soundtrack is very curated

i like uniqlo but i always feel like i expect better pants there. like i mostly just find jeans and cords that would suit me, and i don't even wear cords.

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:24 (ten years ago)

thanks tracer but i'm in usa now

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Friday, 24 July 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

I like the idea that when you're standing in uniqlo your general expectation of better pants in life rises, and when you walk out it's gone

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

that's exactly what happens. every time.

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

when I'm in uniqlo I expect improved political discourse

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:49 (ten years ago)

but greater coarseness in art

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:50 (ten years ago)

shoot I forgot to make an american aigle joke

chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:51 (ten years ago)

when i'm in any mall or shop ever i feel like a real, American man

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:53 (ten years ago)

caek i thought maybe they had.. american.. ah fuck it yeah

transparent play for gifs (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)

transparent play for gifs (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)

i wanna get like 3 pairs of Lees for under $100

transparent play for gifs (Tracer Hand), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:13 (ten years ago)

i used to love Lees!

speaking of America my favorite "wake up in the morning" look these days is Tommy white boxer briefs and a white tee

i feel like Princess Di

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)

I am pretty much that in black tbh

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:24 (ten years ago)

wish i could wear boxer briefs? they are too restrictive, i feel like i have on tights under my pants

marcos, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:26 (ten years ago)

they look good though

marcos, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:27 (ten years ago)

marcos do u wear boxers

Upright Mammal (mh), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:34 (ten years ago)

yes

marcos, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

i don't discriminate, i wear all 3 kinds. love boxers

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:40 (ten years ago)

caek if its not an outright emergency id hunt down the shirts made by general assembly in brklyn. really nicely made and reasonably priced they had some plain white and light blue button-downs s/s14 that i wear all the time.

dead (Lamp), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:45 (ten years ago)

it's not an emergency and i hate shopping so mail order totally fine

This has happened to me like 3 different times:

"I should finally get some good jeans"
"Ehhhh, but they're so expensive!"
"Oh wait, Uniqlo, they have good jeans for a reasonable price!"
"Bahhh, these jeans are floppy"

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)

yah!

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 20:12 (ten years ago)

i like used to get embarrassed for guys who would always wear uniqlo jeans that just looked so sloppily made - but i dunno some guys look great in them

surm, Friday, 24 July 2015 20:13 (ten years ago)

I have two pairs and they both look kind of sloppy. The denim is way too soft, it feels like it has some other material blended with it.

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 20:17 (ten years ago)

btw, Kirkland boxer briefs from Costco are the greatest -- I just have like 20 pairs of them all black and I wear them every day as well as for working out.

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 20:19 (ten years ago)

briefs forever

Is it not completely weird that Ilx men were seen to be in need of drastic style help a few years ago and now menswear threads have totally usurped ILS to the pint that I'm irrationally worried that the women are shut out of the board.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 25 July 2015 05:09 (ten years ago)

but most stuff posted on this thread is heinous though :(

VC, Saturday, 25 July 2015 05:26 (ten years ago)

Maybe cross ref with mid life crisis thread but at this point I'm generally in favour of men wearing those things regarded as heinous.

Although clothing is the least of my concerns w/r/t crises and I enjoy wearing things that are regarded as ridiculous.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 25 July 2015 05:32 (ten years ago)

It's a fuck of a lot better than wearing cargo shorts or whatever but I'm aware of surfing the line between acceptable and outrageous without,of course, going down the line of wearing things that are "too young [for you]". I'm also aware that I'm someone who sometimes wears things that would generally be regarded as outside of what someone my age should wear. I'm not directing this at you btw, VC, just thinking out loud. I'm also not making any claims at being an outrageous or interesting dresser. I actually feel like the older I get the more I want to push the boat out and wear the wrong thing rather than disappear. It's totally mid life crisis territory in a way, of course.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 25 July 2015 05:49 (ten years ago)

Good style = not giving a fuk = sometimes can be heinous in someone else's eyes. That doesn't necessarily preclude cargo shorts although maybe yes it does.

BUT dressing so as to stand out is, I think, a recipe for disaster unless one is very self-confident. Which, maybe a lot of ppl on this thread are! If so, more power to u \m/

VC, Saturday, 25 July 2015 05:58 (ten years ago)

I dress to stand out in a way but I'm very unconfident generally. On the whole I feel like I'm unconfident but can be I a situ. Where I'm thinking that at least I know I'm wearing this good outfit and enjoying it. I really do enjoy it.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 25 July 2015 06:12 (ten years ago)

On the other hand I'm currently, typing this, wearing two pairs of glasses, one over the other, because I can't afford the new glasses I want.

I've never had issues with Uniqlo jeans but then maybe I'm just not knowledgeable enough. It's not as though I expect much out of them tho

Don't worry about us. It's a big tent.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Saturday, 25 July 2015 14:27 (ten years ago)

I have been in situations where I stood out by _not_ dressing boldly but they are few and far between. But I generally was having a lot of fun at the time.

Upright Mammal (mh), Saturday, 25 July 2015 15:21 (ten years ago)

anyone who cares about their dress is prob dressing to stand out - at least to stand out as someone who doesn't dress badly.

i am outwardly self-confident, not so much inwardly, but i don't think i dress to stand out, it's more about expressing myself - and i guess even more than that it's like... there are so many things in life which are beyond our control, what we wear is a small good thing that we can decide each day. similar to like cooking or something. for me anyway.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 July 2015 15:25 (ten years ago)

i have a black longline t-shirt now and i like it because it means i can stand up straight without feeling like i'm gonna show people my midriff. that said i've only worn it out once or twice cos sometimes tbf it looks a bit like a dress. it's about pairing it with the right clothes and i haven't quite worked that out yet.

also lol of solidarity at this - i have a longshirt which i posted upthread and it is very long, it has a kind of religious feel but practically it's like a dress in some ways, when sitting down and eating. i fucking love it and its swishing around, which implicates me as dressing to stand out. just stop wearing pants.

my advice would be to wear slim or skinny jeans and boots - maybe also black - i would keep the rest fairly understated if the shirt itself is an unusual cut.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Saturday, 25 July 2015 15:31 (ten years ago)

That Wood Wood shirt up throat didn't work on me, sadly. I guess their stuff is cut for big slim Scandi dudes not short Scottish ones. Shame because I loved the print.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 25 July 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)

Lol @ up throat.
