ils thread for general menswear and men's clothing ish

H&M is worth a shot. I stocked up on linen pants when I was there last. feel like they've become sorta forgotten in uniqlo's shadow, and tbh aren't as consistent, stock some weird stuff, are kind of dumpy stores sometimes, but do sometimes have some basics that uniqlo runs out of.

which is the least bad h&m in nyc?

not sure, it's a crap shoot. i just checked their site, their short sleeve linens seem to be mostly in prints.

think there's one around 42 that's not bad - i'm pretty sure H&M does it intentionally where not all their stores carry all their lines, the one on 42 has a pretty complete MENSWEAR section iirc

I went to the one by penn station. I don't know if it was bad or not, but it's probably not as crowded as say the ones in more central shopping locations

Banana Republic (and Gap) clothing always miss the mark for me. I've occasionally gotten really good prices on workwear in their sales, but I feel like I can almost always get equivalent quality with better style in J. Crew sales.

i have heard that before and consistently have to rep for the fact that B.R. can still come out with some really good items. i'm not saying the whole store, but for instance their pants fit me - oddly JC pants never fit me. and they make a good belt. but yes i would agree with you on a general level, especially for shirts.

i don't think i ever told you guys about my recent epiphany. i wear my glasses when i get dressed for work now. i didn't used to. it has changed everything and i can't imagine what i looked like all these years.

h&m stores are more cluttered compared to uniqlo, and there is questionable art & furnishings, and they play loud obnoxious music

havent found anything in h&m so long just stopped trying

the whole enterprise feels cheap

I would just go for linen shirts & pants, maybe a polo. just really basic stuff if uniqlo is out

it's another place where you have to dig. i have some great pieces from them (a couple of shirts, a blazer, a vest) - but there is a lot of crap.

feel like h&m has some reasonable stuff but yeah a lot of things that miss the mark for me and lots of fluff

uniqlo is like rows of obvious basics, and if you need that basic item, it will prob fit your needs

the H&M soundtrack is very curated

i like uniqlo but i always feel like i expect better pants there. like i mostly just find jeans and cords that would suit me, and i don't even wear cords.

I like the idea that when you're standing in uniqlo your general expectation of better pants in life rises, and when you walk out it's gone

caek if its not an outright emergency id hunt down the shirts made by general assembly in brklyn. really nicely made and reasonably priced they had some plain white and light blue button-downs s/s14 that i wear all the time.

it's not an emergency and i hate shopping so mail order totally fine

This has happened to me like 3 different times:

"I should finally get some good jeans"
"Ehhhh, but they're so expensive!"
"Oh wait, Uniqlo, they have good jeans for a reasonable price!"
"Bahhh, these jeans are floppy"

yah!

i like used to get embarrassed for guys who would always wear uniqlo jeans that just looked so sloppily made - but i dunno some guys look great in them

I have two pairs and they both look kind of sloppy. The denim is way too soft, it feels like it has some other material blended with it.

btw, Kirkland boxer briefs from Costco are the greatest -- I just have like 20 pairs of them all black and I wear them every day as well as for working out.

Is it not completely weird that Ilx men were seen to be in need of drastic style help a few years ago and now menswear threads have totally usurped ILS to the pint that I'm irrationally worried that the women are shut out of the board.
