Just got feet, don't got SHOES

I clarified with the chiropodist about whether feet get bigger as we age (because I have a fear of sizing out of already hard to find 11s) and he said no, they just get wider. So Birkenstocks be damned, biology would've got you there anyway!

These shoes are so insanely comfortable, I've never had foot support like this in my life! Although the second day of breaking them in was akin to having strapped granite rocks to my feet. But they are better today and my toe is healing! It's going to be a year until I have a full, proper toe though :( Took out a good 1/4 of my toe which seemed excessive but it was a bad ingrown nail so good riddance.

My feet have definitely gotten bigger over the years. I'm sure standing on my feet all day doesn't help.

Yeah I wore a 10 as recently as 2007. Now I'm an 11, sometimes 11W, depending on the shoe.

Where is the intersection of sublime comfort and stylish style? I want really nice cushy athletic-style walking/standing arch support cushion pillow supreme but I also wanna look fly.

Where do I turn?

like right now I have some Onitsuka Tigers and I went to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor last night and their sets are like 2 hours and halfway thru the show I had this epiphany of like "oh my god, I can't, I am too old for this shit, I need great shoes, I need them so bad"

Y Kant Max Read (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 16:52 (ten years ago)

I like those Sketchers with memory foam insoles. I don't know about the stylish part but they are v. comfortable.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)

two weeks pass...

bought a pair of birkenstock london (closed shoe style, not slip-on) for fall

i am wearing them with socks to break them in because the heel rubs ... but the footbed grabs my thin socks & they slip down & bunch up constantly.

anyone experience this & have suggestions for a not-too-thick sock?

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 18:40 (ten years ago)

this drives me insane! and i do not have cure :/

just1n3, Monday, 19 October 2015 20:19 (ten years ago)

;_;

going barefoot with them rn but when the weather gets cold i may be glueing socks on my feet

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 20:57 (ten years ago)

maybe some kind of thin insole that will create some friction?

just1n3, Monday, 19 October 2015 21:43 (ten years ago)

hmmmm

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 23:26 (ten years ago)

one month passes...

i got these

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81vf-Pqbu7L._UX500_.jpg

for a fancy dinner. they're absolutely perfect, not too high, totally classic and really comfortable (and they look way nicer irl). BUT the heel keeps slipping - more so in the left, but also the right. i tried those inserts that adhere to the inside of the heel, but they don't make any difference. the pair i originally tried on didn't slip at all, and they have that great lip at the top which seemed to be preventing that.

any advice? i don't have time to find new shoes or order a different size. i'm not sure i can place a pad in the ball area to push my foot back, because i have an insanely high instep, and it would push the front of my foot up against edge to hard and then cause an unsightly bulge.

just1n3, Thursday, 17 December 2015 05:06 (ten years ago)

Wear them without stockings + after you've been standing in them for an hour or so the leather will heat up and form to your foot more and stick to your now slightly moist skin. Literally that's the only fix I have for this problem. I have it all the time.

Oh actually it might be a problem since that platform isn't going to flex where you need it to, across the toe break. Your foot bends, the shoe doesn't...voila.

If authoritarianism is Romania's ironing board, then (in orbit), Thursday, 17 December 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)

Yeah and I gotta wear pantyhose. I ordered a couple things off Amazon that might help, fingers crossed

just1n3, Thursday, 17 December 2015 23:29 (ten years ago)

the long gel heel pads that wrap around the sides (for reg shoes) work much better than the short ones

in my experience anyway

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 December 2015 00:05 (ten years ago)

one month passes...

i discovered a great solution to this! you can get these little silicone toe slippers that ballerinas use, for just a few bucks, and they hold your feet in place in the shoes.

i also got some lamb's wool padding but haven't tried it yet.

just1n3, Sunday, 14 February 2016 06:04 (ten years ago)

none of the 3 different gel pads i tried for either the heel or ball of foot worked btw

just1n3, Sunday, 14 February 2016 06:05 (ten years ago)

have you tried tongue pads? i have heard they can work for heel slippage

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 14 February 2016 06:10 (ten years ago)

no - the silicone things were great, and totally invisible inside my shoes. i'm gonna try the lamb's wool next time i have to wear heels tho, bc the silicone pads did make the toe box a little too tight at the sides.

just1n3, Sunday, 14 February 2016 06:29 (ten years ago)

I have a wide forefoot/narrow heel problemo and have tried bunches of heel grips; these are by far the best I've ever used:

I've picked up my shoe game this year, no lady office pumps that are only good if you don't have to walk anywhere, I go for purely mobile style now.

And something very similar to these, which I've been kicking the shit out of since last fall (not Frye's, though--my pockets aren't that deep).

http://a2.zassets.com/images/z/3/3/9/2/1/6/3392162-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

Basically what I'm saying is my wardrobe is full of peasant skirts and black leggings now, no pretensions to any kind of adult style except comfort. My shoes are all I have left.

Shoe fraternal twins!

Loving your mobile style, L!

I have no rad new shoes to share, though I did buy a cute pair of tiny-polkadot canvas keds for $20 to wear indoors at friends' houses or whatever in winter. might wear outdoors in summer though my walking ways just destroy this kind of shoe/slipper...

i'm on the lookout for the perfect pair of boots - preferably biker style - and these are the current contenders:

my new comfort look is mid thigh tunics, preferably loose and flowy, underneath a knee length cardigan, with bare legs or tights and badass boots.

just1n3, Friday, 19 February 2016 20:24 (ten years ago)

I tried various iterations (several NOT CHEAP) of not-comfortable-looking-but-comfortable women's shoes and have fucking given up.

I bought (NOT CHEAP but yet CHEAP) two pairs of men's wingtips--the high-end kind--and am not looking back.

I get tons of compliments, my feet are happy, and these shoes are gonna last 10x longer then these crappy velcro shit stuff I wasted time on.
