Suit and tie is the best default, No one has ever failed an interview for being too smart, regardless of the type of job. Lots of people have failed for not being smart enough.

Yeah, I wouldn't wear a suit to a lot of tech companies, startups etc. Also there's this one asshole large lawfirm who thinks it's some kind of fabulous perk that people wear jeans and t-shirts in office and they really like it when people don't come in a suit to the interview.

i wore a tie on my first day in a job in tech (i hadn't formally interviewed but was in as a contractor) and literally the first thing i was told from the first guy i met was to lose the tie

academia is weird too you can wear a suit if you want but you don't have to and it ultimately doesn't matter much to anyone and that is really nice, day to day too on the job nobody gives a shit I wear jeans and a polo shirt with my birkenstocks during th summer and it is fine I blend right in

if this is for a job in a finance dept. of a corporation in canada id wear a business suit to the interview even though your like 99% to wear basically what you posted every single day you work for them. the ppl making decisions in these places are just going to be much more conservative/formal than youd expect imo fwiw &c &c

just wear a suit and tie. you can't go wrong.

you can for sure - i have had interviews where i was told by the recruiter not to wear a shirt and tie - like that it's highly casual and not even to wear a jacket. i can remember for one job this was weird as at the time i wore a lot of blazers. i still wore a blazer anyway (and got the job) but as lagoon says there are some workplaces where suit and tie will have a negative effect.

i think asking the person interviewing you "what's your dress code" actually makes you look good. send them an email maybe.

i like ties they come in so many fun patterns and shapes but yea i wear one like twice a year

Just noticed the interview is Wed, so unless you already have a suit, you're not going to be able to get one fitted and altered by then (pretty hard to find a suit that fits off the rack). You could still do jacket slacks and tie though. Bring the pants and shirt to a dept store or something and just ask them to give you a jacket and tie that would work with them, if you don't have one.

Internet shopping has affected me strangely -- all my life I thought I hated clothes but I think I actually just hated going shopping.

a friend has a similar thing about ties and his neck - he won't even button up a collar, almost like a phobia.

I won't button up my top collar - very unpleasant and uncomfy.

i only ever button up if wearing a tie, don't really like that modern trend for buttoning casual shirts up all the way - but yeah it shouldn't be painful.

it's not so much that it's painful, but i just don't like the feeling of the collar rubbing on my adams apple brrrrr...!

invisible tie is an advanced look imo some ppl can pull it off but its tricky, i never do it cause itd be off brand

i like that look but it def cn be a lil too on the nose

some shirts look better buttoned up esp under a jumper

i usually don't button the top but the trend isn't going away just yet and i like it on occasion, with the right ensemble

it doesn't bother me that much but i have never even really attempted it, just would not work for me

i will sometimes pair a buttoned up to the top shirt with a smart pant if the shirt in question is too loose at the color and it makes for a good patrician effect

it's funny how there's this trend at the same time for bros to have two buttons down on their summer biz casual shirt with no undershirt, like I'm just a chill, chesty bro relaxin at my investment bank

Yeah it's not so bad tbh, I like the fact that over the last few years men's style in NYC has started to find ways to actually acknowledge that it's hot and gross out without going the cargo shorts and birks route.

along those lines, i am hereby amending my comments on jean shorts and going on record as saying that they are indeed acceptable if cut at home and worn in only the right circumstances
