yeah true i guess - i mean it depends on how vintage you want to dress too. one of my uncles who's in his 70s wears pin stripe suits and brogues and a big camel coat and he looks like the don at every family event - i'm fairly sure he bought them 30 or 40 years ago. not sure our generation will be able to pull that kind of thing off.

Everyone has that moment when they put their most trusty jacket on to the realisation they simply can't wear it anymore though.

funny thing is usually if u have something for a long time its cause u dont like it that much, anything u wear a lot will deteriorate no matter how well made

yeah obviously there's the deterioration issue. But a blazer lasts because most people just don't wear a blazer that often.

well yeah u cld conceivably hold out until a cycle comes back again but idk doesnt seem likely, also i mean theyre not really cycles, its diff every time, also ones taste and physical form is unlikely to remain stationary over that term

what the oldest piece of clothing u all own that gets any sort of regular burn

yea there are like 5 occasions a year TOPS that call for a blazer for me

i think mine might be a tshirt that says "bermuda" in embroidery that i picked up at a buddhist meditation centers free box 15 years ago lol it is indestructible for some reason

i have a military-style jacket from j crew that i wear in fall and spring that i wear a ton, it is probably 10 years old but it is totally deteriorating.

haha - there is so much bullshit about quality, but it's still a fairly important thing. if something lasts for 20 years maybe you only wear it for five, but if something is fucked in 2 months that's as long as you're going to wear it for.

in the case of suits it'd be cos i don't wear it that much, or a formal coat or something. the things i wear the most are the convenient things i guess, cardigans or jackets or whatever, or comfortable shoes. or versatile stuff that takes on a new life over time.

I have a vintage blazer in a sort of medium-light blue that I would definitely still rock except it doesn't fit me well anymore. That's the problem with my older clothing. I had hand-me-down plaid shirts from my dad that I thought continued to look good as styles changed, but I've always leaned a little bit old-mannish in my style. I have a hand-me-down wool buffalo print sweater that I'm not sure how old it is, but I think is probably 1990s.

i feel like one of the things that has changed the most in the past 10 years or so is pants. there are no pants that i bought 5 years ago that look good on me right now, i feel like today's pants are just much more trim and better-fitting than even a few years ago

i think "slim fit" permeated the mainstream so even just like regular pants from gap or something are better fitting than they were 5-10 years ago

i have a sort of fleece-style (but not fleecy) jumper with a high collar that I remember wearing at my first ever office job in 2002 and possibly owned before then. I still wear it sometimes and it's in the same shape it ever was, although the other day I got told I looked like a warehouse manager by a colleague.

i love blazers. i wear them a fair bit, although they're a bit of a pain in the winter as it's harder to wear them with a coat on top. Very much spring/autumn wear.

Yeah I tend to think we just reached this low point in pants some time in the 90s-00s where manufacturers just figured it was economical to make these big, shapeless pants that would fit everyone and no one. Since then, perhaps because of the inexpensiveness of foreign manufacture combined with how much china and other countries have improved their textile manufacturing, there seem to be many more cuts and fits available.

even slim cut pants are baggy as fuck on me - my legs and especially my ankles are incredibly skinny - i have fabric flapping around the ankles unless i buy topman or similarly skinny cuts.

maybe the overtly baggy pants that are about this year might be better than a failed slim jean, but it's particularly around the ankles they look bad on me. if it's summer and i roll the legs up or they're cropped pants then it's a bit better.

xpost i was blazer guy for a few years - i went home for christmas this year with no blazer and this was a big step

I used to wear a tweed blazer to parties in college sometimes. One time this dude nicknamed me "business" because of it.

to be a blazer guy you have to start wearing them with t-shirts for casual occasions and that just looks kind of weird imo, at least i could never pull it off

i have some sweaters that i was given in high school i still wear. just basic crew neck sweaters in plain colors (black, charcoal and navy). my grandmother used to send me stuff every sept when i was starting school and i wish i knew where she got them cuz theyre really well made and super warm. they arent really that fitted but theyre not quite 'boxy' either.

other than that i have a couple of pairs of shoes and a blazer that date from like 2005 that i still wear.

I have some shiny Nike shorts from high school. 20 years old.

I am continually shocked that the elastic has held up this long. Must have been back when they had quality sweat shop labor.

They don't make it out of the house though. Strictly lounging shorts.

Thing I have owned the longest and sometimes wear is probably my v-neck duck print sweatshirt, featured somewhere on an old WDYLL thread, picked up around 10 years ago from a vintage shop. As I get older, it's not so much that it has deteriorated or gone "out of style" as it's kind of a comical piece that I feel less comfortable wearing as a dad in my mid-30s.

you have to save it until you are a dad in your mid-50s and then it will be totally fine

built to last - durable - empirical quality etc. actually this prob is my oldest item i still wear besides a cos cardigan. the metal is a bit stained (with age) but the belt itself is as good as the first day i got it

I have a question -- is their a clearly defined difference between "khakis" and "chinos"? Because I bought these "relaxed fit chinos" from SA, and I also have a pair of "Italian chino pants" from J. Crew, and they both seem to be a little bit stiffer and shinier than regular old "khakis." They are colored like khakis, except with that slight sheen, and they have to be dry-cleaned.

belts--non-horrible belts can be found in outlet type stores (nordstrom rack, saks off 5th, etc.) spend a little more and there are lots of online places making nice belts a la the one lg linked to. if you want a nice belt (esp. nice dress belt) but couldn't be bothered to look around online go to allen edmonds.

Where can I get a good, well-made, uninteresting wool overcoat of the type one could wear with a suit to a job interview?
