thrifty grades of pay (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 21:58 (eleven years ago)

for the love of god stevie get some gray pants, the entire rest of your look prob works with gray pants

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 21:58 (eleven years ago)

gray is a key color of pants to be proficient in

lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 21:59 (eleven years ago)

yeah I keep wanting to get grey jeans or slacks
problem is I don't do v much clothing shopping these days but my tastes are changing towards a more well-cut minimal thing, akin to Evermore
luckily there's a Uniqlo that just opened in Philly and also a Nordstrom Rack and a Century 21. Part of me is like "maybe you should go after work" but another part of me is like "maybe you should use the time to learn the stuff you embellished on your resume and also not buying grey pants is not going to cost you the job"

thrifty grades of pay (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 22:03 (eleven years ago)

if your panel is all IT people it's really not going to make much difference so long as you put the clothes on the right parts of your body

kriss akabusi cleaner (seandalai), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 22:05 (eleven years ago)

exactly. take a deep breath and put your grey slacks on one arm at a time

king of ilx's ice hockey/soccer venn intersection (Will M.), Wednesday, 18 February 2015 22:15 (eleven years ago)

I think part of the reason I feel like a slob a lot of the time is that I spent years working in a university IT department and later in a university archives and wearing long pants and a shirt with buttons meant people would think you were trying to hard to be fancy. A polo shirt (most likely with a vendor logo) and pleated Dockers was the equivalent of wearing a tuxedo.

joygoat, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 23:06 (eleven years ago)

I kinda wanna get a pair of pleated Dockers to accentuate my normcore look

, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 23:08 (eleven years ago)

thats just norm

lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 February 2015 23:09 (eleven years ago)

Thanks everybody. I think I have a handle on this now.

I can't believe Stevie is 27. I remember when he was quite a bit less than that. Good luck Stevie.

a girl with colitis (Je55e), Thursday, 19 February 2015 00:51 (eleven years ago)

thanks bub!

Here are the pumpkin pants and the shirt. I am thinking this combination of colors is prob not conservative enough for job interview (maybe? idk); I feel like I ought to select either the pant or the shirt to leverage for maximum productivity and then sunset the other one and pivot in another direction. Which do I do?

can we talk haircuts a little? after 6 months of not cutting my hair and loving my curls i went to FL to visit my folks and felt really unkempt in the warmer weather. not wearing a winter hat all the time made my hair a lot look a lot puffier and longer than i thought. so i got a little fed up and buzzed everything down to an inch while i was there. it was a longer buzz but still much shorter than what i used to after 6 months of no haircut. feeling that regret right now, especially coming back to MA in this cold fucking winter.

i've been cutting my own hair all my life but all i've ever done is buzz everything the same length. i'm thinking i want, like, a real haircut, from a barber or a stylist or something. i want to grow out my curls again but have some kind of taper so it looks neat and not just like an overgrown haircut. freaks me out though, putting my hair the hands of other people. i've always been someone who feels major anxiety after a bad haircut and i think part of the reason i do it myself and cut it all one short length is because it is a little safe and predictable. even still though when i go too short i regret it instantly.

damn i hate getting haircuts, i've always wished i could like magically tell me hair to stay a certain length or grow a couple inches on demand.

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:00 (eleven years ago)

It's very hard to find a good barber

, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:17 (eleven years ago)

You only get to try a new one every 2 months

, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:17 (eleven years ago)

i dont really have "advice" but i found a barber like 4 years ago who made good suggestions and cut my hair well and i have been going to him ever since and it is like a huge source of anxiety in my life completely gone. It Gets Better

max, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:23 (eleven years ago)

max has good hair I've seen it

, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:25 (eleven years ago)

try going bald, it makes hairstyling questions easier

joygoat, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:26 (eleven years ago)

most of my bad experiences w/ barbers were from guys who didn't know how to cut curly hair. also what's the difference between a barber and a stylist?

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:28 (eleven years ago)

xp joygoat i will definitely be there someday. not as soon as i thought but it won't be TOO long

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:28 (eleven years ago)

re: the inescapable urge to cut your hair in Florida, I've got a lot of hair and it gets much bigger when it's humid and takes on a quality I call "wig hair" where it feels like a big dumb hot wig sitting on top of my head. So an advanced move you might consider once you find a barber/stylist you like is to talk about having him/her thin your hair a little bit to avoid the unpleasant experience of wig hair.

Does your spouse get her hair cut at a salon? If she likes it, I'd start there since it will be familiar territory. Another idea is to ask friends/colleagues whose hair you like where they get their hair cut. You will probably have some bad haircuts while you figure all of this out, but hair grows out and like max said, once you figure it out, it is a nice relief.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:35 (eleven years ago)

i agree w/max, i tried a bunch of places and eventually found one that i liked, that's really all you can do.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:40 (eleven years ago)

yeah get recommendations. if you live in nyc i have a guy.....

max, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:41 (eleven years ago)

try going bald, it makes hairstyling questions easier

best thing that ever happened to me tbh

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:43 (eleven years ago)

in boston, thanks though!

cad where do you get yours cut?

carl yes, it is totally wig hair! felt really gross in the warmer weather. my wife has a stylist come to our house and cut her hair. she does mens' cuts too, so she is a possibility.

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:43 (eleven years ago)

you probably don't find yourself in davis square much but i go to dente's barber shop

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:44 (eleven years ago)

i've been just walking in and going with whoever is available but they started offering appointments and that seems to be the way to go now

call all destroyer, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:45 (eleven years ago)

even bald though you still have to make some decisions, e.g. grow the sides long, short buzz cut on the sides, totally shaved, beard or no beard, etc. there is a big variety of bald hairstyles out there, it's only the top that's bald after all

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:45 (eleven years ago)

yea davis is a little far. there is a cloth diaper shop in davis that i go to every couple of months, which i could time together with hair cuts!

marcos, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:46 (eleven years ago)

i took the 'crop that shit all over then never think about yr hair another day in yr life' option several years ago and have been living the dream ever since xp

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:47 (eleven years ago)

i got my hair restyled into a kind of undercut-pompadour and i love it... but... it's so different from my last cut and the stylist kept a lot of length (like 4-5inches) at the front which feels too long and difficult to maintain. Plus my hair gets wavy at a certain length so I end up with two big loose curls at the front that look like a cross between a flower and a ducks arse, so I've decided to go back in and get it calmed down a bit. shame really because i like the idea of having an idiosyncratic hairstyle, but my job is just a little corporate for me to pull it off.

I'm sporting an undercut-pompadour-New Republic Real Face of Rap style these days, too, and am having similar problems. I'm not good at styling my hair every day and the top is very full and the wig hair is going to be unstoppable once summer gets here if that ever actually happens.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 19 February 2015 16:55 (eleven years ago)

hah, carl are you able to post a pic. i promise to do the same once i get mine trimmed properly tonight.
