I'm thinking of getting a new waterproof jacket for walking as my only Belstaff with a hood is too pretty to get covered in mud. Any recommendations (Berghaus, Arc'teryx, North Face, etc, etc)?

how warm does it have to be? i think ive posted about my minotaur jacket upthread but i would highly recommend their waterproof jackets

but they arent like canada goose style parkas so if you need something thats really warm theyre a bad choice

I'd prefer something I can wear outside of the coldest months so that sounds good. Thanks.

and it is the best warm/waterproof jacket i've ever owned. but without seeing if the hood has a bill on the front (crucial imo) it's hard to tell if this one is worth it

i have an aspesi mac and it's v good, and packable, but maybe more city than for walking.

one thing i've wanted for a while is a heavy cardigan, maybe cable knit or similar, that doesn't have a shawl neck. it seems to be impossible to find this.

so for a particular crowd it seems like canada goose has replaced north face somewhat, around boston at least. i don't see as many north face parkas anymore. preppy college kids still wear that north face fleece though

I see a lot of northface in Chicago. But it is really part of the urban Midwestern uniform here. Some CG, mostly on women.

i feel like if i went to a tailor i'd just like expect him to like ~optimize~ it and if he started asking me questions like "how do YOU want it to look/fit" i'd just start short circuiting

I think I've finally found a tailor who can ~optimize~. The last time I went to a tailor it was b/c my suit jacket was too big and just not-right. The tailor asked me how long I wanted the cuffs, how I wanted the chest to fit, etc. I was almost purely ignorant about fit, so I asked her opinions and she said, "It's your jacket, you tell me how you want it."

Where I panicked was when she asked specifically which seems I wanted changed and how I wanted them changed. That is NOT IN MY BAILIWICK! A) I don't really know how to talk about fit and B) The different functions of all those vertical seems on a suit jacket has always puzzled the shit out of me.

It was like a mechanic asking me if they should replace my car's brake fluid pump or the brake fluid lines. Either evaluate and fix or explain my options.

Anyway, new tailor had Opinions, which he helped me understand, and it made me feel like there was some order and sense to what was going on. Then he sold me a new suit. (I hope it's a good suit....? This thread makes me feel uncertain about the meager viewpoints and judgment I have on how to dress myself, so I'd be a pretty easy mark for a shoddy or unscrupulous haberdasher.)

This thread had made me realize if I ever need a suit I'm just going to buy a cheap one off the rack and just deal with however looks because everything else seems like a colossal pain in the ass.

That's kind of what led me to buy from my new tailor, the perfect being the enemy of the good. But today I read the past couple weeks' posts and stared at the lapels, wondering if they were of the best width for our times and how to stay know when they've expired.

I have asked a friend to feel out whether her boyfriend would be willing to do a little Straight Eye/Queer Guy with me. (If he only managed to open my eyes to patterns I'd count it as a success.) Jaymc's wife has offered to dress me, but idk if she was serious or just drunk.

I mean today I looked at my suit from 10 years ago and I can't tell how it is significantly different from the two suits I bought recently.

And when the tailor was said "this suit is good, but the fabric on this one is nicer" (same price on each), I was like... I can tell they are different colors....? Sometimes it feels like being gaslighted.

Went to SuitSupply; they don't make the cut I want in the color I want so I think I'm gonna abandon this.

Century 21 opened in Philly though and I went today and WHOA, I think I am just gonna buy a suit here. Whoa.

I don't know why I haven't suit shopped there actually, they seem to have a big selection

I've bought great ties there -- you have to dig a lot and you're not going to get your classic business colors/patterns in the top makers for the most part, but you can find very nice Brioni, Gucci, Versace, etc. for like 1/3 of regular price if you don't mind a slightly unusual color or pattern.
