but it's expensive enough that if you're going to buy one it's smart to go conservative

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:02 (eleven years ago)

yeah generally the myth of timeless mens clothing "u will own this artisanal waxed canvas jacket for the rest of yr life"

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

still best not to jump on the ass end of a trend tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

There are some things that don't seem to change much, like a good-fitting wool crewneck sweater.

I bought that book in like 2005 lol

i suspect skinniness as opposed to like huge boxy 3 button 90s suits isnt going anywhere soon, prob just the extreme manifestations of it is tho, feel like the super tailored thing where a jacket looks kinda like bondage gear its so tight is too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:07 (eleven years ago)

there's a slight conflation of "timeless style" and "durability" that happens with some of this stuff. durability is hella important imo, but timeless style is a bit of a myth, sure.

it's almost like the book is timeless

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:09 (eleven years ago)

wonder if the super tailored look had something to do w the widespread abandonment of suits as everyday wear, like u put on yr suit and u feel dressed up and sexy up as opposed to something you cld relax and be normal in

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:10 (eleven years ago)

IMO buying conservative is fine but it's also fine to buy something that is well proportioned to your body, narrow lapels are fine if you have a narrow frame, OTOH if youre blake

you can already see the sell-by date

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:10 (eleven years ago)

(Obviously nobody buys a blue velour suit to pull out in 10 years for hteir next job interview but you get my point)

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:11 (eleven years ago)

if ur rich and u have a job that u have to dress up for to enter the building before u put on yr work gear and also if magazines give u suits then fine

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

that Lazio Grey Plain was actually the one I'd decided I really wanted last night when I went through them all! yeah it wd be great if it was a lil darker but I still rly like the color. I'm gonna go to the store and touch it and try it on soon. I'm going for the stylish end of "normal" but not super on-trend bcz I cannot afford to replace my suits every 3 years so yeah I prob do not want to get something super fitted and skinny and then get to wear it twice before it looks sad and lame.

unsolicited advice is SO SOLICITED AND NECESSARY bcz tbh I have never really worn a suit before and do not know what I'm doing. thx for the lapel tip!

I know that fabric quality is v impt but I don't know how to gauge good vs bad, esp when looking online. I also have a weird body so I don't at all feel confident ordering even jeans or shoes online let alone a suit esp w/o someone there to like hold my hand and be a good suit expert. there's no nordstrom in Philly either :-/

huge boxy 3 button 90s suits

these look like the losing horns from Price is Right sound

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

well-made conservative suits aren't "timeless" but they do have a longer shelflife than most garments IMO. Especially since as you age you can kind of get away with being less up-to-date as long as your clothes fit well.

Stevie if you have no experience with suits I really recommend going somewhere that has good suit staff. I don't really know what they have in philly but I'd ask around. Is Lord & Taylor accessible? I'd avoid Macy's.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:18 (eleven years ago)

worth seeing if its somewhere that will tailor the motherfucker for you too

You can take a train out to King of Prussia maybe?

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:19 (eleven years ago)

I got one of Lord and Taylor's house brand suits before I went to college (lol) and it was a very boxy two button suit that I ended up throwing away *shrug*

Brooks Brothers has some Milano fit suits (their skinniest cut) on sale for $550-$600 -- sometimes if you open a BB credit card when you purchase you get another like 15-20% off. And I think they do basic alterations for free. The fabrics will be nice and the construction will be good.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

I don't know how many of those will be available in store though.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

The Fitzgerald suits are relatively trim too as long as you get fitted properly.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

i dare u to get a double breasted brook bros suit stevie

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:24 (eleven years ago)

lol. I actually like that one, wouldn't wear it but like it.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:24 (eleven years ago)

I've been thinking hard about getting a double breasted suit tbqh xp

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:25 (eleven years ago)

u cld prob pull it off since u r slim, feel like double breasted might be better in a lil less tailored look like more drapey komonoish jacket wld be an ill look imho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:27 (eleven years ago)

stevie if you have any kind of lead on a good tailor near home i would encourage you to avoid in-house tailors at most big stores (unless it's free and you can pay another tailor to clean up whatever they missed). the work just isn't really that good, and you're not going to be in a position to tell them exactly what you want.

Philly proper doesn't have a L&T but it does have an Indochino showroom and a Suitsupply store (and a Brooks Brothers, too). Yeah at this point after getting some extra $$$ at xmas earmarked specifically for a suit I am stepping it up from Macy's and going somewhere more suit-oriented; I really wanna hit it outta the park.

there's actually a Saks and a Lord & Taylor like on either side of my work, but idk L&T feels like it'd be totally outta my price range even on sale but who knows

i dare me not to get a double breasted suit, how's that, dawg?

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:29 (eleven years ago)

um thats not how dares work actually

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:29 (eleven years ago)

L&T will have suits in your range. Even saks might have a few. Their store brand suits have a good rep.

wear the suit around the house, check the mirror, do some things (drink, scratch your head, cross your legs) and you'll get a feel for the spots that need some work - Arm and leg length are the easiest to get tuned dead on and there's a lot of personal-preference leeway. I think I had the coat's waist taken in a little bit last time I bought off the shelf. &, yeah, cad on the money, find an alteration tailor.

The traditional advice, iirc, is make sure the shoulders are right before you buy - they're trouble to fix with alterations.
