Curious to see if SA will do a last-minute 40% off non-SA-branded sale stuff too -- I think they started at 25% off SA, then 25% off all, then 40%/25%. Will it go 40%/40%?

Kath I thought you were saying you didn't like the song. Nonetheless, I give not a shit about someone's projected other america's reading of a pop song

pick-stitched lapels c/d?

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 04:45 (eleven years ago)

can be nice imo kinda depends

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 12:45 (eleven years ago)

they look good or bad depending on the general quality of the suit I think... making a good suit look better or a bad suit look worse

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:09 (eleven years ago)

or not a "bad" suit, just a cheaper one

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:10 (eleven years ago)

what I want in my first suit that I have abt $500 saved up for:

  • charcoal
  • slim cut
  • two buttons
  • double vents
  • narrow notch lapels
  • pick stitching
  • NO CONTRASTING BUTTONHOLE, GOD, THESE LOOK SO FUCKING DOUCHEY
where I'm leaning toward purchasing from:

  • Indochino
  • Suitsupply
just want something simple but v stylish and quality, been talking abt this for ages but am ready to actually go buy the damn thing in the next month or so (or idk maybe lose 10 lbs first and then go do it). v exciting imo. gonna look v chic going to hotel bars and sipping Plymouth martinis

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:22 (eleven years ago)

I would also consider J. Crew (probably need a sale to get to $500), or maybe Boss from a dept store sale. Maybe something like this:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/boss-hugo-boss-pasolini-movie-classic-fit-charcoal-wool-suit/2934365?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=0

or this:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/john-varvatos-star-usa-trim-fit-wool-suit/3732240?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=1482

or just poke around on their suit page. The nice thing with Nordstrom, if you can get to one, is that you can order a few suits online, then bring them to the store when they ship and have one of the associates help you figure out which one is best. Their suit people are really good. Then you can just get it altered there.

I've heard mixed things about indochino and suit supply.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:34 (eleven years ago)

I've had great experiences with suitsupply. whether it'll come in at $500 or lower depends on how closely it will fit off the rack. I require a lot of tailoring, so a suit there comes closer to $700 for me.

but you should be able to get exactly what you're looking for there, and the salespeople are pretty well-informed and friendly. at j crew, you'll be spending more money upfront, even if it fits you well off the rack, and when I went, the salesperson was a little more clueless. nice fabric though.

unsolicited advice: maybe consider 'normal' (and not narrow) lapels... lapels are widening again, and narrow lapels are already starting to look a bit dated

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

otherwise the suit you describe is like the most versatile one there i

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)

I agree about the narrow lapels -- you see them on every lawyer and wall-streeter now and they're getting played out.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:44 (eleven years ago)

that's a very nice suit china, good choice

tru, prob dont get overly skinny pants either

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:45 (eleven years ago)

Narrow lapels are fine if you have the frame for it imo

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:45 (eleven years ago)

I like the narrower side of "normal" lapels. Same with ties, I like slightly narrow but not "skinny."

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:46 (eleven years ago)

imo ultimately everything is okay just like with a suit u prob want it to last and not make u feel uncool when ur at a wedding in three years

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:51 (eleven years ago)

unless ur some baller individual who wears sexy suits all day better to go a lil conservative w the suit imo

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:52 (eleven years ago)

i mean it will go out of style regardless but better later than sooner, i was just going through some of my old clothes that were in storage to donate and found an old suit w some nice wide lapels lol

agree with this

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:53 (eleven years ago)

btw i wld love to be such a baller individual what sort of life do i need to live

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:54 (eleven years ago)

BTW I've been kind of wondering if there's any really good graphic/photo book out there about men's suits, like to learn terms, fabrics, concepts in re pairing certain kinds of shirts/ties/suits, suggestions about proportions, etc. Like a coffee table book but also useful.

i like this kinda wish it was a lil darker tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 14:56 (eleven years ago)

I've got one skinny narrow lapel short jacket j crew suit and I still like it! but it would suck if I didn't have some more normal suits for most of the time.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:00 (eleven years ago)

xp, perfect, thx

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:01 (eleven years ago)

I think we talked (on this thread) about the sort of myth of the timeless suit? as if it's not subject to fashion and replacement like 'normal' clothes (which is def not true).

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:02 (eleven years ago)

but it's expensive enough that if you're going to buy one it's smart to go conservative

chinavision!, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:02 (eleven years ago)

yeah generally the myth of timeless mens clothing "u will own this artisanal waxed canvas jacket for the rest of yr life"

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

still best not to jump on the ass end of a trend tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

There are some things that don't seem to change much, like a good-fitting wool crewneck sweater.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)

cap toe dress shoes

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:05 (eleven years ago)

I bought that book in like 2005 lol

, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:07 (eleven years ago)

i suspect skinniness as opposed to like huge boxy 3 button 90s suits isnt going anywhere soon, prob just the extreme manifestations of it is tho, feel like the super tailored thing where a jacket looks kinda like bondage gear its so tight is too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:07 (eleven years ago)

there's a slight conflation of "timeless style" and "durability" that happens with some of this stuff. durability is hella important imo, but timeless style is a bit of a myth, sure.

it's almost like the book is timeless

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 15:09 (eleven years ago)

wonder if the super tailored look had something to do w the widespread abandonment of suits as everyday wear, like u put on yr suit and u feel dressed up and sexy up as opposed to something you cld relax and be normal in
