I've always thought those would be hard/dangerous to moonwalk in

wank anything you feel like wanking (rip van wanko), Friday, 16 January 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

one month passes...

i didn't ever buy those boots but i did just score a white pair of lacers that i have wanted to find in my size/at a decent price/in good condition for over a decade and honestly i feel like i am emitting a radioactive light because i'm so excited about them

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 21:36 (eleven years ago)

I bet they're rad!

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 21:38 (eleven years ago)

I've been trying to find them for so long that I've convinced myself that they're THE shoes I want. Regardless I'm going to wear them til they fall apart bc that's what I do with boots. Hooray!

groundless round (La Lechera), Wednesday, 4 March 2015 01:24 (eleven years ago)

They're finally here and more ivory than white but I'll take it. Being fully stocked on boots that aren't threatening to spring a leak/disintegrate is like having a stocked fridge. Ahhhhhh.

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:05 (eleven years ago)

Ahhhh! You might be able to brighten them up with white polish or glaze or whatever is right for the finish on the leather?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

It's ok - I like em ok this color -- less LOOKATME and more useful.

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 March 2015 19:53 (eleven years ago)

Oh okay.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 9 March 2015 20:01 (eleven years ago)

not to be demanding or anything but

just got words, don't got PICS?

no but i followed the link and those are CUTE

mattresslessness, Monday, 9 March 2015 21:53 (eleven years ago)

Thanks! I'll try to post a better one when not on phone. They're my all time favorite lace up boots. No chintzy zippers, always lace up tight against the leg.

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:09 (eleven years ago)

these are the proper white ones, but i haven't ever found any at a reasonable price that are in decent condition (not decrepit)
the ones i got are ivory, but they are brand new, never been worn, and were $20, which is a good price for a new high quality leather boot

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:36 (eleven years ago)

so they were a bargain .......................... to boot!

mattresslessness, Monday, 9 March 2015 22:38 (eleven years ago)

lol u know it

Here's my deal with shoes:

I buy a pair of shoes that I really like, and they are more or less the only shoes that I wear every day until they fall apart in 6 months, and then I buy another pair of shoes.

This is a p bad cycle. My plan rn is to go out and spend $2-300 on maybe 3 or 4 pairs of great shoes that I will rotate with different outfits and they will last a long time. I want different types of shoes (sneakers, dressier, etc) that are not like $150 a pair. Are Nordstrom Rack and Century 21 my best bet here? Does anyone have any insider shoe pro-tips? Online shopping is not an option for shoes w/ me.

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 12 March 2015 13:22 (eleven years ago)

Nordstrom Rack is good for low cost good quality shoes. I got both pairs of Cole Haans from there

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 12 March 2015 18:54 (eleven years ago)

yeah i'd go to a place like nordstrom rack or even tj maxx/marshall's isn't bad
also if you find some you like and know what size you want, ebay is full of shoes.

in other footwear news, the boot fairy has visited me again! my friend found a pair of insanely buttery barely-worn frye boots in my size for $24 and they are on my feet right now. this is a score beyond my comprehension.

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 12 March 2015 19:22 (eleven years ago)

ooooh nice

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 12 March 2015 19:36 (eleven years ago)

think I'm gonna try to get

  • pair of tan wingtips
  • pair of black dressy shoes
  • pair of black/grey casual "tennis shoes", sneakers but nothing too athletic or new balancey
what else should I get? rn I wear black wingtips all the time w/ every outfit, makes me feel cool and spiffy wearing like cutoffs and a cut up Sleater Kinney tank top and a flippy brim cycling cap and shiny black wingtips w/ no socks

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 12 March 2015 19:43 (eleven years ago)

sorry to contradict VG here but according to spouse, Cole Haan's men's shoe quality has gone to shit and he "won't even waste the 25 bucks to get them resoled and polished up--not worth it."

He is a firm believer in dropping big coin on Alden's. Claims they are the most comfortable shoes he has ever worn; they look great; and the quality is phenomenal. When they need a little refresh, you drop them off at your local Alden store (or mail in or whatever) and for like $50 they come back like brand new and ready to go another 3 years before the next refresh.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 20:33 (eleven years ago)

warning: when I say big coin I mean BIG coin.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 20:34 (eleven years ago)

Carmina's are also amazing. I've got a pair of those and spouse is eyeing a pair for himself.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 20:36 (eleven years ago)

i don't even have coins that big!! my budget is literally 1/10th of that, like $50-70 a pair

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 12 March 2015 20:41 (eleven years ago)

ebay? I realize I am forty something DINK and that is why I have nice shoes but also. . . bunions.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:07 (eleven years ago)

What size shoe do you wear, if S gets hit by a bus on the way home I give u all his fancy shoes!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:09 (eleven years ago)

Also: will someone please explain why chucks cost as much as they do? IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! I would post on IA but in this case it is totally RA. Those things can't cost more than $3 per pair to manufacture. WTF.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:10 (eleven years ago)

capitalism?

groundless round (La Lechera), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:13 (eleven years ago)

I'm like a 10 or 10.5 but I'm actually a wide and have comfortably worn between an 9.5W and an 11 regular and then had 10 and 10.5s that do not fit me at ALL, I have such bizarre feet! I have to try everything on first. It's a pain.

gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:13 (eleven years ago)

Tip! If you find a style you like or a brand that you know how it fits, check 6pm.com or zulily or sometimes even Amazon before you buy in store and you might find them super cheap.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 12 March 2015 21:16 (eleven years ago)

carl do you think we can talk about bunions on this thread? Did you have both feet done at one time or separately? What did you do for shoes after surgery? Pls don't make me start an ILX bunion thread (note: I will if I have to).

LL capitalism makes electronics that seem more complicated to make than chucks less expensive than chucks, idgi, where are shoes for the ppl, don't say toms b/c wtf with that whole charade?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 22:12 (eleven years ago)

basically I have LL shoe envy and am just not sure what I should get for my feets instead of chucks for casual wear. This is no doubt a "how do I shot personal style" problem.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 22:14 (eleven years ago)

I was in Midtown East the other day for the first time in a while, and all the cool women were wearing what appeared to be black leather Van's slip-ons with white or cream bumpers. Fwiw.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 12 March 2015 22:18 (eleven years ago)

With black leggings, natch.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 12 March 2015 22:19 (eleven years ago)

I had bunion surgery on both feet about two weeks apart. I stubbornly refused to wear the boot cast more than four days or to wear the shoe cast on the one foot once I had the boot on the other. I wore orthopedic Crocs for awhile until my feet healed and then I wore various types of black maryjane comfort shoes, which is what I wore anyway. Now I can wear (lower) heels (I can go a little higher with platforms) at work although I won't commute in them.

My favorite shoes comfort wise are these Sketcher sneakers for ultra marathons (pause for laughter) but they are seriously so comfortable I don't even care how ugly they are. I also like Arcopedico as a brand (they have some very bunion friendly shoes), and certain Clarks.

My main foot issue now is plantar fasciitis so that fucking sucks. Hence the hideous Sketchers.

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 12 March 2015 23:21 (eleven years ago)

Try putting 3/4 insoles in you Chucks since they have no arch support. Pedag makes good ones and I like these Walgreens brand for the PF - http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/walgreens-men%27s-tri-balance-gel-orthotic-inserts-8-12/ID=prod6188307-product

Also Vionic and Spenco make good slippers/sandals with a lot of support, which helps.

Sincerely,

Long Term Recipient of the Footsmart Catalog

Let's quit our jobs and start a company for awesome-looking, yet bunion-friendly, footwear.

Oh wait I already quit my job so ummmmmm you're gonna have to come up with the start-up funds. Sorry.

OH WAIT KICKSTARTER

bring it

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 12 March 2015 23:51 (eleven years ago)

Stevie my husband had the same problem with shoes wearing out no matter how expensive. You have to pick the right sole. I think shoes are generally more expensive in the US but he bought a pair of expensive (ish - like $150) boots and a pair of rugged sneaker type things to alternate. But then saw loads of other potentially suitable ones (like Fly London) and got them cheap off Ebay.

Btw if you want unusual ones that won't be at all practical, have a look at Irregular Choice

kinder, Friday, 13 March 2015 07:02 (eleven years ago)

Stevie, on other shoes maybe a suede or leather ankle boot – chelsea, chukka or desert – in a darker brown or reddish brown? They're pretty flexible, and could fill out a wingtip/black formal/sneaker set. On-budget, I'd say shop around for clarks, but a) there's probably uk-> us mark-up that'll make them poor value, and b) their desert boot at least is narrow, so it's a bit clown-shoe on me if I buy to width.

I am wide-footed and high-arched and was a chronic wearer-through of shoes, but I started making a bit more money a couple of years back & bought a (to me) frighteningly expensive pair of brogue boots w/ commando sole. They've been really tough and comfortable, work with most things short of a suit and are ageing really nicely. They are my favourite shoes ever.

woof, Friday, 13 March 2015 14:15 (eleven years ago)

s, i would second the recommendation of suede if you are intent on staying under $100/pair, it will age better than cheap leather. beyond that you have the right idea in terms of buying several pairs and rotating them--cheap shoes kinda are what they are in terms of useful life but you can spread out the wear and tear.

one other rec if i may, consider going to a real mens shoe store like an allen edmonds and have them measure you, if you know your "actual" size and width it may help you out in hunting for deals with brands that make more traditional shoes and have several width options. even if you have no intention of looking online or for pricier stuff now it is good info to have for the future.

Stevie my more stylish half has taken great interest in your shoe sitch and has proposed that these may be worth looking at:

http://www.jackerwin.com/

He actually just bought a pair so that he can assess them, will report back.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Saturday, 14 March 2015 22:34 (eleven years ago)

Those Jack Erwin are nice classic designs… but they're pushing suggested budget + online only, which means no trying on for a potentially odd fit.

(also I find them using UK sizing a bit odd)

btw self-censored in my previous post. Didn't mention that I since bought some more good shoes, and have been fascinated by the world of the Northampton bench-made goodyear-welted shoe.

And now the Jack Erwin thing has led me into world of spanish-made men's fancy shoes & I have wasted an hour reading styleforum and askandy threads about Meermin, and potential bargains coming from the slide of the Euro, dammit let go of shoes

woof, Sunday, 15 March 2015 02:50 (eleven years ago)

i own two pairs of meermins, highly recommended.

I saw someone on the train Friday wearing high heel platform Velcro Reeboks! Like the Reeboks I always associated with waitressing jobs. Definitely not my cup of soup but she was working it.
