im kinda bowled over bc i always thought the canada goose hate was directed in the same direction as the ol' uggs hate, but am now realizing that there may be a far more insidious coded racism attached to it. blech.

Um, there is? In NYC I thought it was just another rich people status thing.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 19:59 (eleven years ago)

walking around manhattan a couple weeks back i saw these jackets everywhere (there was even some convo about this among the people i was with) and got the same impression - that the brand was a status thing in the city.

i hadn't ever heard of cg before this trip but admittedly there isn't much buy for down parkas here in dallas, though we do have a ton of rich folks down here so maybe i'm just not looking hard enough

pursuit of happiness (art), Friday, 9 January 2015 20:02 (eleven years ago)

even w/in the context of rich status there seems to be a general consensus that its particularly douchey

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:04 (eleven years ago)

heard some employees of the hardcore outdoor store discussing amongst that even tho its trendy as hell it is actually the best jacket fwiw

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:05 (eleven years ago)

they were all "get it now while its still made in canada"

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:06 (eleven years ago)

"northface is more of a lifestyle brand"

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:06 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I'm sure that's true, it's just that buying *THE BEST ARCTIC PARKA* for the five minute walk from your subway stop to work in a moderately cold northeast city is a little like buying the highest quality breadknife in the world.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:08 (eleven years ago)

no the racism charge itt re: CG was more directed at that tumblr, not at the CG hate in general

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:12 (eleven years ago)

xp it spreads butter like a dream tho

the need for yr clothing to have empirical value

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)

re: gear, for rich dudes menswear is basically the nu sharper image catalog, go check the like john lobb thread on styleforum and see if you can tell where added value craftsmanship and thorstein veblen's tears dovetail into a small pile of $2200 loafers.

adam, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)

or any brand that has a video explaining its superiority. i bought a mission workshop bag last week and it owns but their website makes me kinda uncomfortable

adam, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:16 (eleven years ago)

man I totally thought cg jackets were just totally regular, if a little dweeby looking. but I also thought they were cheap, or normal jacket price.

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:17 (eleven years ago)

me too, i saw a dude wearing one in a sandwich shop at lunch today and he was rocking like plastic kenneth cole square toes

adam, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:18 (eleven years ago)

lol when i lived in western MA a while back there was this total outdoors gear-head who commented on my $39 old navy puffer jacket, he was like "nice jacket.....is it GOOSE DOWN????" im like no it was $39 at old navy

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:19 (eleven years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 20:25 (eleven years ago)

Lamp's point is quite possible, i have no idea. I am new to canada, know nothing of Toronto, am probably missing some cultural context. that said it was as much the fact that 75% of the photos are of azn people as that pretty much every photo caption of a black person suddenly turned up the slang pretty high. anyway, i just have hurt feelings because i am new to the parka lifestyle and didn't know all the codes yet.

I lived in chicago for ten years and got by for the first nine with something I bought in marshall fields for like $80 and eventually had no insulation at all near the pockets, then I got a Spiewak duffle coat at the end of my last winter there, but it would not cut it here.

life is hected (rob), Friday, 9 January 2015 21:56 (eleven years ago)

I have this "Classic English Duffle Coat" with no brand, just says inside that it's an English duffle coat made in england -- I think I bought it off a coat guy at Brooklyn flea for around $100. I rocked it for a little while but somehow I don't quite know what to do with it, like it's sort of somewhere in between a casual coat and an overcoat, and the style is a little bit poncey, and it's not warm enough for super cold days but kind of too much square footage of heavy material too be wearing on a non-cold day.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 22:00 (eleven years ago)

that is 100% otm about my duffle coat too, i am always surprised how heavy it is

life is hected (rob), Friday, 9 January 2015 22:02 (eleven years ago)

yeah heavy and stiff too

Backpacks are fine but I am on year 7 of my chrome bag and idk if I could ever use anything else at this point.

Deceptively spacious!
Pulls right against the body so it doesn't bounce around when you bike!
Loosen the strap and sling it around to access the contents w/o removing it (you can even do this on your bike fyi)!

xp seems a propos on this thread to mention that that little twist of Hitchcock's right shirt collar point was an intentional part of his look ... there's a story about him hating an oil portrait in which the artist straightened it out

thank you! i was looking for an article that explained the cg thing the other day. i still think it's just a fucking parka but good for them.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 11 January 2015 02:14 (eleven years ago)

I don't mind cg, and think they look nice and warm. But pretty sure I'd never pay that much. Unless I had a lot more money, then sure.

need the duck boot tho, those wont fight snow

lag∞n, Sunday, 11 January 2015 02:37 (eleven years ago)

i remember i had a canada goose jacket growing up. didn't realize they were a thing, always made me think of dorky 90s ware. speaking of which, it seems like the whole normcore thing has saturated the NYC suburbs pretty thoroughly, quickest i've ever seen a trend get picked up. everyone in my office is rockin' it right now, even the VP of my department.

Wound up with two full cut Peter Millar suits from Nordstrom today for about 750 total - realized the 38 in the full looked much better than the 40 in the trim cuts. Style forum dudes seem to think millar is a good value, non trendy but quality.
