A female coworker told me she "invested in one." You could just buy a still very nice $300 parka and take a cab to work every legit cold day for the next several years for about the same price imo.

jordan this is the behavior of someone spending his first winter in the northeast, its time to get a grip

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 16:59 (eleven years ago)

(big waterproof boots will make u feel very powerful)

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:00 (eleven years ago)

yea dude get some boots, there are plenty of cool looking boots. wearing boots is one of my favorite things about winter

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

(no more strategizing ways to navigate slushy puddles at the sidewalks edge)

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

oh yea xp there is a huge difference, you feel invincible walking across snow banks and slush and you never worry about ruining your shoes or pants

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

i don't really do boots but i'm in the market for some sneakers that look cool but can still hold up to winter ... anyone have any suggestions (in the ~100-120 range)

Camper bikeshoes I mentioned upthread are waterproof, though not great treadwise. They held up well today when there were only a couple inches on the ground, probably wouldn't be too good in deeper snow though. Not that any sneaker really would.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:02 (eleven years ago)

i own three pairs of boots of escalating robustness

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:02 (eleven years ago)

tho tbf when i lived in ny i got by with pretend city boots, which was a mistake btw

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:02 (eleven years ago)

there were only a few days last year in nyc where you truly needed BOOTS

J0rdan S., Friday, 9 January 2015 17:03 (eleven years ago)

lol me too. for the most part 've lived my whole life in rust belt/midwest and now new england.

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:04 (eleven years ago)

the ones i wear most often though are not too robust -- they are sturdy leather hiking boots and they are good unless there is 5+ inches of snow. then i have these hardcore kamik boots. i also have these black rubber baffin boots that are seriously a little ridiculous but if it is legit downpouring i am happy i have them

marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

I bought a crazy-thick pair of North Face boots at the same time as the dumb North Face hat (I work above a Sports Authority). They are truly great boots...for trudging through the woods in three feet of snow. They're slightly awkward for a snowy subway commute. Debating getting another pair of boots as well.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah i wear my hiking boots mostly then i have some rip off bean duck boots for high snow, then i have the quoddys which really are more shoes

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:08 (eleven years ago)

let's....not talk about how many pairs of boots i have. i have a few, let's just say that.

call all destroyer, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:09 (eleven years ago)

how many boots do u have

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:10 (eleven years ago)

I like everybody else in NYC get by with bean boots

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)

Bean boots are great value - $100 and backed by the LL BEAN LIFETIME GUARANTEE

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)

I relied on a single pair of waterproofed hiking boots as my snow boots for like 10 years, they were great. Finally fell apart last year.

man alive, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:12 (eleven years ago)

yeah bean boots r good

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

I ruined a pair of Red Wings by wearing them in the snow :( they got wet inside and forever smelled like mildew/mold

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:16 (eleven years ago)

ew need 2 treat those bro

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:17 (eleven years ago)

I sprayed em down with lysol and it didn't work

even thought about buying a disinfecting UV light (the kind that can burn yr eyes out)

finally just gave up on em

RIP

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:18 (eleven years ago)

rip boots

lag∞n, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

hmm I think I have red wings that I need to get treated. worried about the leather cracking.

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

been putting it off though. it's stressing me out. tried doing saddle soap + cream myself and it was not an improvement. they're not smooth leather, and maybe I applied the wrong stuff.

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

You can have my huberd's shoe grease or w/e it's called (recommended by elmo I think rip)

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

my red wings have held up to canadas winters really well i just sprayed them with some magic from some can i had

wizaerd (Lamp), Friday, 9 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

basically I don't know much about maintaining boots.

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

when I first bought mine I sprayed some waterproof stuff (a year ago) but then I think I tried to get too fancy and ended up altering the condition of the leather.

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

I'll take 'em to a professional

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

Was it silicone based

, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

today is the first duck boots day this season fyi

xpost beats me!

chinavision!, Friday, 9 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

also jordan if being a teenager taught me anything its that you can get through the winter with nothing but air jordans and athletic socks if you really put your mind to it. nike sb mids also a viable choice

wizaerd (Lamp), Friday, 9 January 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

advice from teen lamp

how epic can yr night be if u didnt even take off your coat

Francis Björk Morgan (Will M.), Friday, 9 January 2015 18:15 (eleven years ago)

I grew up in dire winter land 100 miles from where they make stormy kromer hats and have a black one. It's good at like 20 degrees and up but doesn't cover my ears enough to be warm below that.

I just buy cheap winter hats (for some reason called "chooks" in upper Michigan) every couple of years at shopko for ten bucks cause who gives a shit, it's winter. Ear flaps for when it's below 10 with the big down jacket and my 25 year old sorels that simply won't die.
