lag∞n, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:28 (eleven years ago)

Wallet recommendations? Unisex? I lost mine in a ropey cab ride from Greenpoint to Sunnyside.

How about Shinola? I need something that also holds change. Leather, classic.

I started wearing Dockers this year because I had problems splitting the seat of all the mid-range, Macy's-bought wool dress pants (Nautica, Calvin Klein, etc.) I had been wearing. It was a choice between spending all this damn money getting them dry cleaned and mended all the damn time or buying a new pair of pants for $35 a couple times a year. I'm pretty happy with the Dockers, but yeah, one of them has the makings of a hole in the knee already because my legs don't fit into the seats on my commuter bus.

Okay, fucking sick of the dockers now. Wearing disposable clothes is so dispiriting. Really would like to find some higher-quality, sturdy twill trousers that are available in a 42 waist. Want something that could run the gamut from office casual to yard work. Would be willing to shell out extra money for something that lasts. Any suggestions?

how's life, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 12:33 (eleven years ago)

you will def pay extra, but check out bill's khakis. i have never handled a pair but supposedly they're extremely well-made.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 13:15 (eleven years ago)

how's life you might want to look into a pair of carhartts, they have all kinds of pants, well maybe not dress pants, but many could easily pass in a business casual environment and they are all pretty sturdy

marcos, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

and not terribly expensive either

marcos, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:20 (eleven years ago)

ime the best cheap trousers are lands end chinos on sale. http://www.landsend.com/products/mens-elston-608-slim-fit-chino-pants/id_247116 i think they are still too expensive here but if you wait for clearance + a 30% coupon you are looking at like $18 and they'll last a year or two. they are sturdier than dockers.

fwiw i also have RRL and unis chinos that i like a lot but i really don't think the cost (which is between 5 and 10 times the cost of the LE chinos on clearance) is necessarily reflected in the quality.

adam, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 14:46 (eleven years ago)

i love those lands end pants, strong buy rec imo. i don't believe the waist goes up to 42 though :/

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 15:59 (eleven years ago)

Been noticing a lot of brands just don't seem to carry 31 waist size pants :\

, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:00 (eleven years ago)

true

can i just say buying trousers over the internet is mental

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:03 (eleven years ago)

Thanks for the recommendations everybody. And yeah, I'd definitely prefer something I could try on and feel out for myself.

how's life, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:14 (eleven years ago)

if you buy something that's returnable is it really a big deal? i get it, but there's so much high-quality stuff on the 'nets that isn't in most stores.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)

it means i have to put it in a package and go to the post office and then wait for the new pair to come, it just seems extraordinarily time-consuming. in a shop i know right then and there if something's not fitting or feeling right.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:57 (eleven years ago)

Order many pairs at the same time. That's what I do with shoes.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

oh yea i hate buying shit online. i do it all the time because it still seems difficult to get to a store and have time to try everything on there. so i'll order like 8 pairs of pants, try them on at home, and keep one of them and mail the rest back. it's a pain in the ass. shopping pretty much in general is a pain in the ass

marcos, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:03 (eleven years ago)

there is so much shit i see online that i have great hopes for and i anticipate the arrival of the package with great fanfare but then i open up the package and it sucks. "what, THAT shade of green? these are THAT thin and cheap? that's not what it looked like on the website!"

marcos, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:05 (eleven years ago)

i find one make/style of item that i like and that fits and buy it in 500000 colors, all online.

adam, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

I have a jacket in my trunk that I bought on Zappos for my kid that I've was supposed to get to a UPS store 2 weeks ago.

how's life, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:13 (eleven years ago)

I buy most of my clothes online and it is a real hassle. I end up keeping a lot of stuff that I wouldn't have purchased if I'd had a chance to try it on in a store because it's good enough, more or less.

also god yes:

and then you send like 4 pairs back? that just sounds like an enormous pain in the ass. not to mention grossly wasteful.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:28 (eleven years ago)

if u work somewhere that u can ship stuff from this all becomes much easier

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 17:46 (eleven years ago)

i.e. get a job at fedex tracer

marcos, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 18:32 (eleven years ago)

fedex guy visits most workplaces!

For sure wasteful, not going to argue with that one. And kind of a pain in the ass. It can suck carrying a big box with 5 pairs of shoes in it on the train, but I manage. To ship them back I just put them in my work outbox and the mail room takes care of it.

I do this primarily with running shoes, since going to a running shoe store with limited stock and a pushy salesman is the worst.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:02 (eleven years ago)

shopping on the line is the best and worst of times

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:11 (eleven years ago)

like u can do it at ur leisure, think things over, comparison shop - but u cant try things on and u have to deal w the shipping stitch, i prefer it tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:12 (eleven years ago)

companies (llbean, zappos) that include free return shipping labels in the box are god

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:13 (eleven years ago)

amazon prime has em too but u have to print out yrself

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:13 (eleven years ago)

also i live in the sticks so for a lot of stuff on the line is my only option

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:14 (eleven years ago)

I know, and it's kind of shocking when you have to buy from a site that doesn't have a good return policy or fast free shipping with free return. I forget that everywhere doesn't work like Amazon/Zappos/Running Warehouse.

Jeff, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 19:49 (eleven years ago)

one wld think its gonna become industry standard in not too long
