Hey I have another question stemming back from that khaki dudes pic -- are slant pockets suddenly everywhere too? I do not like.

I feel like there are a number of sort of esoteric things lately (slant pockets, ticket pockets, single breast peak lapels) that are worn, but not really noticed, by today's casual suit buyer.

I was also recently browsing through J. Crew's suiting page, and I generally like their suits, but I think it's kind of weird how many different kinds of non-standard suit fabrics they sell, and it just makes me wonder like who is the target demographic for a moderately priced, hip-styled three-piece navy flanel windowpane suit

It's not a rich dude, because a rich dude is going to drop a lot more. But that's a lot of money for most people to spend on a novelty suit.

i think a rich dude might not want to spend top dollar on a jacket that might only be hip for a few seasons or might only get occasional novelty wear

ha yea i have also noticed j crew suits, some of them are nice, especially the linen ones they put out every once in a while. i don't have the money to get one but i admire them. lots of other j crew shit seems repulsive though, when i was a teenager they seemed like a rich kid's abercrombie. but i feel like maybe that's changed now, they are going for more of a "heritage" brand kind of look and

i own a jcrew suit btw its p nice but just an ordinary navy suit nothing crazy!

also i agree with cad about the poorly matched and inappropriate shoes w/ suits. i went to a wedding a few years ago and the brother of the bride had on this really sharp, well-cut cream-colored suit and he had on these puma-like sneakers. it was really bad. yea it was totally a "i'm still dressed sharp but don't take myself too seriously" kind of thing but he would've looked so much better with good shoes.

i think that's the opportunity they identified--taking fabrics that used to only be used on >$1,000 jobs and bringing them a little downmarket

Probably got a whole roll of tartan and were like let's go crazy

i have a matching khaki jacket + trouser pair that i got for like $300 total and i wear it to summer weddings a lot

nope this was a kind but verrrry slow tailor in the financial district who always said "it's your body!" and made me espresso

he'd kinda shrug when he said that

man i need to buy some more suits. i have a dark navy suit that was SUPER fucking cheap and it doesn't fit very well, not horribly i guess, but it doesn't feel stylish and i don't like wearing it. i like browns and dark olives a lot and i feel like i could really use a well-tailored dark brown suit.

I have a brown corduroy jacket that i like a lot but is too big

but damn i am at this conference right now. it's for librarians and publishers and i'm a librarian and i feel super under-dressed. all the (male) publishers have on suits and jackets and i just brought my schlubby academic librarian clothes that are fine around campus but here i feel sloppy. you can look around and determine on one glance who is a librarian and who is a publisher (the men at least)

tbh despite feeling under-dressed here w/ all these publisher suits i also feel pretty grateful to work at a university where there are a lot of weirdos and you can basically wear whatever the fuck you want. i don't think i'd want to work in a field in which i have to wear a suit and tie everyday. i wouldn't fit in.
