BTW on what occasions does one wear a shirt w/ a french cuff

Do I need one is my question

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 19:28 (eleven years ago)

IMO any time you wear a suit it's fine, looks funny without one. I'm not partial to them in general though.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 6 November 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)

No, you don't need any. Except maybe tuxedo shirts, if you're actually going to own a tux.

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 19:42 (eleven years ago)

yes it's only *required* if you are wearing a tuxedo, and then you're getting a tuxedo shirt.

Also dudes who are into cufflinks are usually assholes

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 6 November 2014 19:50 (eleven years ago)

I had a colleague who used to wear french cuffs. Certainly no asshole. But he also wore cowboy boots. When you google that combo, you get a full page of results about Rick Perry.

how's life, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:00 (eleven years ago)

i like french cuff shirts but i am also an asshole

≖_≖ (Lamp), Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

lol

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

I just meant those dudes that are really into having a bunch of pairs of cufflinks, not anyone who has french cuffs, jeez

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:40 (eleven years ago)

don't let these schnooks drag u down 龜

r|t|c, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)

Thank you all for your comments I am going to order a cream shirt with french cuffs

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:46 (eleven years ago)

Hey I have another question stemming back from that khaki dudes pic -- are slant pockets suddenly everywhere too? I do not like.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 6 November 2014 20:48 (eleven years ago)

I feel like there are a number of sort of esoteric things lately (slant pockets, ticket pockets, single breast peak lapels) that are worn, but not really noticed, by today's casual suit buyer.

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:02 (eleven years ago)

just a lot more options at lower prices I guess

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:05 (eleven years ago)

I was also recently browsing through J. Crew's suiting page, and I generally like their suits, but I think it's kind of weird how many different kinds of non-standard suit fabrics they sell, and it just makes me wonder like who is the target demographic for a moderately priced, hip-styled three-piece navy flanel windowpane suit

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:09 (eleven years ago)

Young People are expanding beyond just owning an interview suit

Young people are demanding fun suits

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:10 (eleven years ago)

ha I almost made reference to a windowpane suit xpost

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:15 (eleven years ago)

that said... I think I'd enjoy a flannel windowpane suit

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:15 (eleven years ago)

Like who is going to drop $700-800 on this:

https://www.jcrew.com/mens_feature/TheSuitShop/PRDOVR~A9182/99103485790/A9182.jsp

It's not a rich dude, because a rich dude is going to drop a lot more. But that's a lot of money for most people to spend on a novelty suit.

People who want to star in a Wes Anderson movie

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:17 (eleven years ago)

really all you need: http://us.suitsupply.com/en_US/suits/havana-brown-check/P3926I.html?start=25&cgid=Suits

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:23 (eleven years ago)

i think a rich dude might not want to spend top dollar on a jacket that might only be hip for a few seasons or might only get occasional novelty wear

the late great, Thursday, 6 November 2014 21:34 (eleven years ago)

ha yea i have also noticed j crew suits, some of them are nice, especially the linen ones they put out every once in a while. i don't have the money to get one but i admire them. lots of other j crew shit seems repulsive though, when i was a teenager they seemed like a rich kid's abercrombie. but i feel like maybe that's changed now, they are going for more of a "heritage" brand kind of look and

marcos, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah they totally changed their whole steez a while ago http://www.fastcompany.com/3007843/creative-conversations/how-jenna-lyons-transformed-jcrew-cult-brand

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

i own a jcrew suit btw its p nice but just an ordinary navy suit nothing crazy!

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

also i agree with cad about the poorly matched and inappropriate shoes w/ suits. i went to a wedding a few years ago and the brother of the bride had on this really sharp, well-cut cream-colored suit and he had on these puma-like sneakers. it was really bad. yea it was totally a "i'm still dressed sharp but don't take myself too seriously" kind of thing but he would've looked so much better with good shoes.

marcos, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

oh interesting! xp

marcos, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

its prob not hard for them to make a few extra suits in wacky fabric at the scale they operate fwiw

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

i think that's the opportunity they identified--taking fabrics that used to only be used on >$1,000 jobs and bringing them a little downmarket

call all destroyer, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

Probably got a whole roll of tartan and were like let's go crazy

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:21 (eleven years ago)

i have a matching khaki jacket + trouser pair that i got for like $300 total and i wear it to summer weddings a lot

max, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:23 (eleven years ago)

my first suit was j crew, and I wish I knew what I was doing a bit more. I was talked into buying too small, and now it's sort of my casual suit.

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:23 (eleven years ago)

really nice fabric though

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

which was the first thing the tailor said to me when I brought it to him

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

There used to be a trend in HK a few years ago of wearing white AF1's w/ all white tuxedos at yr wedding

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:24 (eleven years ago)

the other thing he kept saying was "it's your body!" when I described the difficulty of getting the suit to fit right

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:25 (eleven years ago)

HK people are crazy when it comes to suits tho

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:25 (eleven years ago)

in a heavy accent

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:25 (eleven years ago)

Is this the williamsburg attic tailor xp

lol

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:26 (eleven years ago)

nope this was a kind but verrrry slow tailor in the financial district who always said "it's your body!" and made me espresso

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:27 (eleven years ago)

he'd kinda shrug when he said that

chinavision!, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:27 (eleven years ago)

man i need to buy some more suits. i have a dark navy suit that was SUPER fucking cheap and it doesn't fit very well, not horribly i guess, but it doesn't feel stylish and i don't like wearing it. i like browns and dark olives a lot and i feel like i could really use a well-tailored dark brown suit.

marcos, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:28 (eleven years ago)

like a chocolate color

marcos, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:28 (eleven years ago)

Hmmm

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:29 (eleven years ago)

It's your body

, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:29 (eleven years ago)

brown suits are usually considered "bad" but f the h8rs man do ur thing

lag∞n, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:35 (eleven years ago)

yea I have black hair and olive skin and I feel like a dark brown suit from a nice fabric would work well with my color
