cad, i'm not necessarily opposed to #1. i'm not sure what the hell to do

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)

these shoes fit! i'm not sure when i started wearing new balance. i do know that chucks didn't work out. i'm a size 14 or something

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:27 (eleven years ago)

i just don't want to be an overgrown 18-year-old anymore

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

You don't have to get that deep into the cutting edge of fashion or w/e but you can def pick out better versions of a uniform, if you want to up your game in a simple way. I mean you can buy 8 of the same shirt if you like it and it fits and you don't want to think about it 8 days out of 10, but you can gradually increase the quality and/or fit of that basic shirt.

Sorry, sneaker peeps, but I have to say looking good in white sneakers is not for rookies.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

i could find you a picture from 2006 where i'm dressing awfully similar to how i am now

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

hm. never heard the white thing tbh until now. i do have a "uniform" right now but it's not great. it needs to improve.

feel like just take that intention and move forward with it and you will make progress just like anything

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:31 (eleven years ago)

tho prob like 99% of people feel like they cld dress like more of an adult in this day and age

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:31 (eleven years ago)

ok but i have no idea how to do that. i mean, superficially, i could go get a nicer shirt i guess but idk if it'd be "me" enough b/c of cluelessness

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

I don't know what you look like, m, but off the top of my head I'd say lose the sneaks and upgrade the fit of your jeans maybe? If you're wearing the same ones a lot of the time, a better pair would have a broad effect.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

i have no knowledge, no context

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

do u want to buy a fancy pair of jeans and wear them every day w/o washing them?

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

xpost that's not bad advice. i wear carpenter jeans and they're a lil baggy

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

i do laundry a lot tbh

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

dreams of selvedge markers dashed

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

if you have no direction at all, look out for a photo of someone or even a dude on the street who you think looks good and shamelessly bite whatever elements appeal to you.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

if u see a cool dude kill him and take his clothes

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

lord & friends forgive me for pulling this one out of the archives, but i'm the one in the black hoodie:

WDYLL December 2010 - You cannot fashion a wit out of two half-wits...

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)

lol @ the word "fashion" being in the thread title

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

it's easy to look ok if not super fashionable in the same basic thing and not have to worry about clothes if you pick out a few staple items. for me, it's a slim fit oxford shirt, slim fit dark jeans, and desert boots. basically the most boring outfit imaginable but i sometimes even get compliments on my clothes.

Treeship, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

i can't overemphasize enough how much i don't do clothes shopping

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

i mean, i might look terrible. not really sure at all. but i don't think i do and i never have to think about clothes. find three or four things you like and then get them in a bunch of different colors and patterns.

Treeship, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

so this will be kinda new

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:45 (eleven years ago)

markers a pair of leather boots will make you feel instantly stylish imo

, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:46 (eleven years ago)

yea but you can't wear leather boots w/ pair of baggy jeans and a tee

marcos, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:48 (eleven years ago)

I had another idea! Get a better haircut style. It's something that you only have to do every 5 weeks or however long, and it requires absolutely no day-to-day effort. Also, carpenter jeans? Unless you're an actual carpenter, put those on hold for camping and grungy days and find a more fitted jean in a dark color (since it's fall anyway).

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:51 (eleven years ago)

i have snow boots and hiking boots. maybe i should wear the former

and i think i'm gonna ditch these type jeans tbh

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:52 (eleven years ago)

i'm def gonna switch up the jeans. i think.

as far as i haircut goes i don't go often enough, but i usually cut it decently short

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:53 (eleven years ago)

^this is basically the outfit I was going to suggest. And between Uniqlo and Zappos you can accomplish this without leaving the house and also not spending much money

, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:05 (eleven years ago)

nb, in addition to the outfit i suggested to markers sometimes i mix it up and go for a neo-grunge filtered through normcore aesthetic that ends up looking sloppy but is actually quite advanced

Treeship, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:06 (eleven years ago)

you look nice in that wdyll pic markers
just fwiw: i dress kinda shittily/blandly, & feel okay about it; good luck styling if you're stepping up, also know you have solidarity in thinking it isn't the most important thing in the world if you Return 2 The Slouchiness

schlump, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:07 (eleven years ago)

honestly markers just look at screenshots of white male protagonists on network sitcoms and dress exactly like that

i was actually going to legit offer if it wouldn't be too weird!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:33 (eleven years ago)

i guess like, if you want to dress differently, the first step would be to find some stuff you like. just look at lots of pictures of clothes and see if there's anything where you say, i would like to wear that.

next, and i can't overemphasize this enough, it totally sucks but you must go to stores and try things on. try on things that you don't think will fit. try on things that might look dumb. grab 8 pairs of pants and try them all on, and start to notice how they fit differently.

this exercise has at times sucked for me because due to my body type and habits i'm like right on the cusp of normal mens sizes and larger person sizes, but i had to power through and i learned a ton about clothes that way.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:36 (eleven years ago)

also ppl have posted tons of good ideas so far.

also for the love of god don't dress like that pic of jason segel.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:43 (eleven years ago)

markers I think Lamp makes a good point but you can also watch a lot of anime and video games and copy that too which is my mo

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:50 (eleven years ago)

i kinda dress like that pic of jason segal but i don't look like jason segal thank god

yung dirk (Clay), Thursday, 25 September 2014 22:57 (eleven years ago)

is he wearing 4 layers? it's baffling.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 23:03 (eleven years ago)

oh yeah i didn't notice that second shirt that is apparently over the white collared shirt. n/m, i do not dress like jason segal and never would.

yung dirk (Clay), Thursday, 25 September 2014 23:05 (eleven years ago)

anyways to chime in, i mostly would echo IO's posts above. find some things that fit you well and make you feel good wearing them. if you really hate shopping and don't know how to shop for yourself, bring along a friend whose style you admire, maybe buy them lunch or something, and really trust that they can see how you look in clothes in a way that you can't. once you find some stuff you feel good wearing you'll be well on your way to knowing how you want to present yourself imo.
