very excited for knitwear

gwyneth anger (patron sailor), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 22:53 (eleven years ago)

i had some very good luck thrifting last month and have a some great heavyweight geometric patterned sweaters to bust out as soon as the weather gets cold enough

one is 1970s from the harvard co-op, sort of a fairisle type but with triangular & daimond motifs in various blues & greens

the other is an incredible dries van noten of unknown vintage that was $7, possibly the best deal ever. its a cyan and royal blue optic diamond pattern on the upper chest, with rugby stripes in the same colors on the abdomen & forearms. i love it

A+ would wear

Abandoned Amusement/FUN SHIRTS (seandalai), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 11:31 (eleven years ago)

oh man this eve I visit the tailor to pick up an eBayed TWEED SUIT I'm so psyched.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

I'm gonna wear it like crazy. it's a slightly wide-lapeled YSL thing

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

I should combine with knitwear

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:30 (eleven years ago)

keeping the tailoring kinda loose on it. just slightly floppy and comfy.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:31 (eleven years ago)

where are your favourite places to get clothes? Round my way it's pretty much TK Maxx all the way. Mens' outlets are generally very expensive and deal in the G-Star/Super Dry variety. Secondhand shops rarely sell decent stuff - mostly old men's suits and crappy t-shirts from Blue Inc. Have never got the hang of online shopping, and the idea of buying clothes without trying them on / seeing them in the flesh terrifies me. Still, I'd be interested in where else I could look. I'm able to get into London fairly easily.

zip it shrimpy (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 13:36 (eleven years ago)

i have a tweed steven alan suit its p tite

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:16 (eleven years ago)

The trick to online shopping is buying more things than you need from places with good return policies. I actually always hated store shopping and find I care more about clothes now that shopping online makes it easier.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:23 (eleven years ago)

i like to shop online too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:30 (eleven years ago)

i would like store shopping more in theory but everything in stores is straight garbage compared to the quality/price you can get online.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 14:57 (eleven years ago)

i think shopping irl and online compliment each other nicely since i can use the internet to get general ideas about what i like, easily replace basics that have worn out and get access to stuff that isnt sold locally but shopping irl is nice because you can get surprised by stuff you wouldnt have thought to look for and its easier to try stuff on. also the tactile and the real is v appealing when im dreaming about buying something

Lamp, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

yeah i do really miss the tactile quality of browsing irl when i'm looking for something online.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 September 2014 17:29 (eleven years ago)

irl is definitely more fun but I do most of my shopping at sales time and it's easier to scour for bargains online. As Hurting says, the returns policy is key.

i can't believe i'm posting to this thread because i'm the least fashionable person in existence, but then again, that's why i'm posting to this thread

dudes, i seek your help/knowledge. here's the deal: right now, i wear the same pair of white new balance sneakers every day, in addition to a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, perhaps a hoodie, and sometimes but not often a jacket. also: glasses, because without them i wouldn't be able to see. i rarely dress differently, and i don't look good or stylish in what i wear at all. i'm not even sure how to go about improving things beyond, like, looking at pictures of more stylish people and taking my cues from them or reading about this stuff or talking to y'all. i know nothing about this shit. and i don't really want to get deep into it -- it's not an interest of mine. but i want to look better. what should i do?

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:34 (eleven years ago)

perhaps i should go dig up fap pictures and post them here at some point

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

so markers,

in simple terms, there are two things you can do:

1) change your style and wear different types of clothes. it doesn't sound like you want to do this.

2) wear the same types of clothes you are wearing, but pay really close attention to how well they fit.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:43 (eleven years ago)

in a way, 2) is actually the harder one to do, at least initially. but you are a tall guy with a perfectly good body type, you can definitely find some clothes that fit you really well.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:44 (eleven years ago)

And stop wearing white sneakers.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:47 (eleven years ago)

^^^^^^

the power, it hit me like a fist (askance johnson), Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:49 (eleven years ago)

pffft white sneakers can be dope as hell, there are no rules

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:54 (eleven years ago)

^^^^^^

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 25 September 2014 19:55 (eleven years ago)

get a denim shirt

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:21 (eleven years ago)

White sneakers as dope is not for beginners imo. Get different shoes.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)

cad, i'm not necessarily opposed to #1. i'm not sure what the hell to do

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)

these shoes fit! i'm not sure when i started wearing new balance. i do know that chucks didn't work out. i'm a size 14 or something

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:27 (eleven years ago)

i just don't want to be an overgrown 18-year-old anymore

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

You don't have to get that deep into the cutting edge of fashion or w/e but you can def pick out better versions of a uniform, if you want to up your game in a simple way. I mean you can buy 8 of the same shirt if you like it and it fits and you don't want to think about it 8 days out of 10, but you can gradually increase the quality and/or fit of that basic shirt.

Sorry, sneaker peeps, but I have to say looking good in white sneakers is not for rookies.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

i could find you a picture from 2006 where i'm dressing awfully similar to how i am now

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

hm. never heard the white thing tbh until now. i do have a "uniform" right now but it's not great. it needs to improve.

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:30 (eleven years ago)

feel like just take that intention and move forward with it and you will make progress just like anything

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:31 (eleven years ago)

tho prob like 99% of people feel like they cld dress like more of an adult in this day and age

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:31 (eleven years ago)

ok but i have no idea how to do that. i mean, superficially, i could go get a nicer shirt i guess but idk if it'd be "me" enough b/c of cluelessness

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

I don't know what you look like, m, but off the top of my head I'd say lose the sneaks and upgrade the fit of your jeans maybe? If you're wearing the same ones a lot of the time, a better pair would have a broad effect.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

i have no knowledge, no context

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:32 (eleven years ago)

do u want to buy a fancy pair of jeans and wear them every day w/o washing them?

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

xpost that's not bad advice. i wear carpenter jeans and they're a lil baggy

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

i do laundry a lot tbh

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

dreams of selvedge markers dashed

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

if you have no direction at all, look out for a photo of someone or even a dude on the street who you think looks good and shamelessly bite whatever elements appeal to you.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

if u see a cool dude kill him and take his clothes

lag∞n, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

lord & friends forgive me for pulling this one out of the archives, but i'm the one in the black hoodie:

WDYLL December 2010 - You cannot fashion a wit out of two half-wits...

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)

lol @ the word "fashion" being in the thread title

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

it's easy to look ok if not super fashionable in the same basic thing and not have to worry about clothes if you pick out a few staple items. for me, it's a slim fit oxford shirt, slim fit dark jeans, and desert boots. basically the most boring outfit imaginable but i sometimes even get compliments on my clothes.

Treeship, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:38 (eleven years ago)

i can't overemphasize enough how much i don't do clothes shopping

markers, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

i mean, i might look terrible. not really sure at all. but i don't think i do and i never have to think about clothes. find three or four things you like and then get them in a bunch of different colors and patterns.

Treeship, Thursday, 25 September 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

so this will be kinda new
